Zuko actor is so good. I dead ass shed tears when the 41st Division welcome him home as the music plays, having each soldier taking their time saluting one by one. Zuko, who was overwhelmed with anger just moments earlier, sparked up hope once again, but this time for a different reason. MAN THIS SHOW IS GOOD!

Y'all wrong. Destruction and conquering is not part of the culture. That's why citizens from the Fire Nation tried taking the Fire Lord out. And it was mentioned in the original animated series in the episode with the Sun Warriors.

We get Zuko before the war council. Dallas did a good job at playing a younger version full of light and joy. I think Lt Jee was the dude that Zuko almost had an agni kai with in the episode the storm. We dont get Zuko dipping out after being chained up at the fire temple. And also we dont have Sokka and Katara here. Roku seems like a joyful grandpa here. He seems even more relaxed here. Roku was the first Avatar to overshadow Aang. He actually talks to him in the show way before Kyoshi

@@xyrots No I think they're referring to a different moment in the present. There's Zuko vs his father (by surprise), then there's Commander Zhao, then there's him almost fighting one of his own crewmates who was starting to have bad faith in Zuko who acted as though he didn't care about his crew. It's in the episode The Storm where we learn both Aang and Zuko's backstory. Aang tells Katara and Iroh tells Zuko's backstory to the crew. Later they both end up in a storm and Zuko not only prioritizes his crew's safety but even lets the Avatar get away for that moment. Jee is an interpretation of that.

26:34 It wasn't always part of their culture. Fire Nation originally had music, dancing and singing as a huge part of their culture. The only person in the Fire Nation still upholding those traditions is Iroh when he sings and plays music on the boat sometimes. Sozin began the whole Fire Must Conquer, Fire is Destruction! kinda mindset within the Fire Nation.
Watching the cast interviews confirm that they intended for Ozai to be a bit more human, yes he does care a little bit for his children and wants to raise them well (as tools for war). He's not just favoring Azula like the cartoon.

Just like when Aang went to a fire nation school, the band was much more 'uniform'.
The pre to early war fire nation culture was still like feudal to meiji restoration era Japan, while by the time Ozai took the throne, the nation had radicalised to ww2 Japan level, regarding the other nations as inferior and such.

If anyone is wondering why the Fire Lord is acting in such a way, just remember, this live action version is showing asian representation in the story.
Asian fathers who seek to gain positions of power always are like this. Responsibility, duty, and honor is above all. They will seek to use "tough" love on their kids and trust me when I say this...THE FIRST BORN SON...is the one that gets the worst of it all because they want to ensure that son is not a failure.

      @wintersyve2000 Před 5 měsíci +4

Seriously. I've seen so many reactions that cut Ozai slack for displaying a trace of human emotion. But that's why two dimensional portrayals of abusers (like Ozai in the animated show) can be harmful. Because in real life, abusers DO have human emotions. And that doesn't render their actions any less harmful or abusive. Ozai is a human being with feelings, who is also manipulative , megalomaniacal, abusive bastard who plunders, pillages, and murders without remorse, and who tortured, abused, and permanently disfigured his 13 year old child for the crime of not being a sociopath. His ability to emote and act out his own twisted version of love does not mitigate any of this, not in the slightest.

I believe the "in the juice" mindset of Ozai is not a huge change. In the comic "the Search" Ozai kind of starts to talk about how he originally felt about Zuko and how he found his compassion a weakness. His feelings soured after he thought Ikem was the real father but was prevented from harming Zuko by Ursa. It fits with this live-action.
In this episode, Ozai burnt Zuko but not enough to lose his eye only a permanent reminder. He is a master firebender could have done worse with no repercussions. The royal medic is allowed to work a miracle poultice to heal it. Ozai comes into the room to reason with Zuko in private. Zuko told Ozai that the 41st should have been given a chance. So Ozai then removes the 41st from their suicide march to work for Zuko in his banishment.
He didn't have to only scar him, talk to him, or listen to his opinion. He cast him out to grow the heck up before he gets himself messed up in court politics, and allow Zuko to prove his conviction about the 41st being worth anything, to me.

Great discussion at the end, can see where both sides are coming from but have to say all the brutality and hostility is not fire nation culture, you see this in the later seasons as well. Thats just how Ozai is and by extension his family/supporters and military.
People can't question how he treats his family because thats damn near a death sentence. If he's willing to sacrifice innocent people for his cause what do you think he'd do to people questioning his ethics? Fire nation people burning their children out of tough love definitely isn't normal in that world, it's just how Ozai is choosing to strengthen those around him and maintain an image like Rob and Pat were saying.
You gotta keep in mind the kind of people that raised Iroh and Ozai and consider how that contributed to how they grew up. Iroh was fortunate enough to realize what they learned and what they were doing was fucked up. Ozai embraced the fuckery and chose to pass it on to his children and legacy.

1 of the few things I can say the Netflix series did better than the original Nickelodeon series was expanding upon Ozai & Iroh's relationship as brothers. In the original series they never are on screen together, but here there are multiple times they interact with each other, which adds more to their backstories & character developments. Also, having the 41st Division be Zuko's crew was a nice detail that I'm glad they included.

@@dontreadmyprofilepicture8817 Exactly. A lot of the small changes seem to be done to give more depth to the characters. Make them less one dimensional. One dimensional traits can and do work well in animated form... for live action, I think we all benefit from having more depth in our characters. LOVE how they made the 41st the troupe that work for Zuko AND the ones that he spoke for.
But I find it ... interesting how in this version, we get a clear indication that Ozai does seem more compassionate himself. Take as you will, but in this version, the 41st ARE SAVED and thus one HAS to assume that's because of Ozai himself. HE decided to not sacrifice them AND give them to Zuko.... weird right? In the animated version, we have to assume that sacrifice was probably made and those soldiers did die. But not here. Not sure what it means in the whole picture but I find it fascinating.

Ozai and Iroh werent close in the cartoon either, and I think Azulon pitted his children against each other too, the way Ozai is doing to Azula and Zuko. Ozai resented azulon for picking Iroh same as how Azula resents Zuko cz Ozai pretends to favor him to get to her, keep her under his control.
