- On a day when Chicagoans want to escape the bitter cold, some cannot. Jesse Kirsch reports on the city's homeless and life in frigid weather.
I can’t imagine how cold they are .its sad to watch
This is why we need public housing to be built again. This is a crime against humanity.

What bugs me is the reporter talking to her with her door open, dang, just letting in more cold! And for crying out loud, why not pay them for the interview so they can get a room for a night!
Why is it people only care when it's snowing? This should be the number one priority for local government. Your citizens are living in horrifically inhumane conditions that would be unconstitutional if imposed on criminals as punishment. Some of them literally freeze to death out there. It cannot and must not continue.

If you love ur pets don't have them out side in freezing weather, give the pets to shelter. Then u can live in a shelter and not on the street.
The dog is one thing, it can protect them, and give love, and is more likely to not die in the cold.

Many shelters kill animals that can’t be adopted… no kill shelters tend to be more selective about the animals they accept. It’s not that simple

Im a trucker in California...it's awful what I see...not as bad as Chicago with the freezing temperature...but the homeless population is staggering and growing by the day..California's are leaving at a great rate..not to export California's liberal politics but to escape a doomed state..understand we are good people and don't want anything more to do with liberal politics we have seen enough..
They need flannel to help insulate them as they sleep. Wal-Mart sells sets of flannel sheets, I have 4 sets to donate. It does not even matter what size they are. They need thermal underwear as well just to stay warm.I worked on the ships out in the Bering Sea, thermal will help keep you warm and so does flannel. Solve the problem one step at a time for God's sake. Go to Costco and buy a bulk package of food they can snack on that will keep them going. It is vital to think of what they need to survive!!!

During winter, homeless people need
(1). Long thick socks to keep their feet warm. Thick gloves for warming hands. Thick hat to keep warm.
(2). Hot food and drinks. Needless to ask if they need food - some may not have eaten for the whole day and it is cold out there during winter.
(3). Blanket for them to cover themselves during strong wind at night.
(4). If the mayor can organize a hall for homeless people to stay until winter passed by, that will help so much for the homeless people.
I hope every fortunate people, when sleeping on a cold night and you have four walls and a thick blanket to keep you warm, please give a thought about the homeless NOW living outside on the street during the winter storm.
Or better still, imagine there is a homeless person shivering to death on an empty stomach, hoping for warm food and drinks. Maybe this will help us to get the better of us, by starting to do some charity work to help the homeless people.

Ive been homeless plenty of times. I bathed in bathroom sinks at truck stops, etc. There are ways to get clean when you're homeless. I also hand washed the clothes.
And what variety of homeless were you? Living in a car? That's very different from living in a tent.
Take the get a job schtick and shove it. You should know full well the serious logistical hurdles to getting work when you're on the street.
Nevermind the hopelessness of it. You go to work and then after work you have to sleep on the sidewalk? Possibly for months until you have enough saved to rent a place? Sounds great. Hey, you gonna be able to actually swing that when you're constantly exhausted and in endless survival mode? I doubt it.

What does one do w/ their pitifully measly belongings to keep them from being stolen while gone at work all day? Also, what if someone does not have transportation to get to job site and no $ for bus fare? Some answers sound good on paper, but don't translate into workable solutions, do they?
I'll bet Alicia never bathed or cleaned up in restrooms or washed her clothes out in a sink somewhere when temps and wind chill is well below zero. Truck stops charge $ to use their showers unless filling up your rig there w/ petrol.

We never recovered from the great recession and our leaders totally ignored the homelessness surge throughout the 2010s. And now with covid pandemic, the homeless population will only increase throughout the 2020s.
It surged because all the no rent payments the government forced on property owners caused a bunch of people to say "Hey free rent for 2 years? Awesome!". Then the gravy train stopped, and landlords kicked them out, and obviously you're not going to rent to someone who didn't pay their last landlord. And these landlords weren't just not getting rent money, they were forced to pay for water bills and stuff like that, for housing that was bringing in no income, meaning they were paying for all of that out of pocket. This is what you get when democrats turn housing into communism. But keep voting for those democrats. Eventually there won't even be money to print for the welfare. Eventually there won't even be stores to spend the welfare. Eventually there will be nothing but a wasteland. The only reason why Chicago is even still standing is because it's burning itself up like a candle, on old construction. Yeah you can burn that wick for about 50 years, but after that there's going to be nothing left when those old buildings crumble, just like detroit.

I was homeless for years and never threw my trash all over the sidewalks, nor forced pets to stay with me. I know people with very, very low IQs will defend this person but in reality their behavior is indefensible. Get rid of everything you don't need, throw all of your trash away, and try out of people's way. Focus on hygiene, programs and access to resources and job placement.
I think the both end of the tunnel needs to have planks erected up (only the walkway area, of cos not the road) to block off some wind. That might reduce some cold. But you can't build the wooden wall as you need to authority approval before you can do that. Hope someone will look into this.
Loose the pets. They walk will make it more likely to get diseases. From fleas and transporting bacteria that can kill you. Wow why can’t we build more shelters we are building them for immigrants who aren’t even citizens why do we dump on our own citizens like this? I don’t care what they did or what their story is that isn’t my concern. Helping is my concern. We should not have billionaires but that is their own greed. And I am not a socialist at all not in the slightest.
You should ask those in charge about that and keep asking until they do something

I would gladly donate $20 towards this effort to help these people instead of the re-election of the President on my tax form. Think how powerful this would be if everyone had that option and chose to donate..

The city is failing the people. All of the buildings in the Loop should be converted into shelters, hospitals, and nursing facilities.

Bales of straw would go a long way to insulate a tarp with a small tent or two tarps with straw between them....or rockwool insulstion placed in plsstic garbage bags to keep the insulation dry

I'm sorry, but if you're not willing to find your pets homes, what can you really say? You're not doing them any favors but letting them freeze too. I lived outside in Michigan off and on for about 4 years. I finally got a place but I had to make some minor changes.

Go South ! Start in the summer. You can walk 10 miles a day, in 10 days that's 100 miles, 100 days is 1000 miles, then you're in Florida from New York.

Most of these people in Chicago aren't even from Chicago, they're homeless people from California who the state gave a bus ticket to the midwest to get rid of them. They've been doing it for decades. They give them some nice meals and a free one way non stop bus ticket, then just dump them there. They do it in the summer, and then when winter hits the homeless people are still lingering around, not realizing how bad winter is, because they've been living in California where it's warm year round. So it starts getting a little cold in the fall and they think this isn't so bad, then it gets colder and colder and before they know it it's below zero. I tell every homeless person I talk to in the fall that they better get out of the state anyway they could, because it's going to get really cold soon. Some of them laugh it off and say "nah I'll just dress warm". But there is no dressing warm for below zero when you're outside 24/7. Eventually hypothermia gets you no matter how warm you're dressed. I know a homeless guy who said exactly that, and they just cleared out his camp because he wasn't there anymore....either got out or froze to death by now, and probably the latter because I saw him pushing his cart a week ago when it was above freezing. For many of these people from California, when they end up in Chicago, it's their first winter they've ever really experienced. They don't know how bad the cold really is. Anyone who actually lived in cold areas before they went homeless, know to get out of town before winter hits, even if they have to walk for weeks to the south. They aren't just going to be hanging out until winter hits, because they know how cold it gets. So almost all the people homeless in cold areas, really aren't even from the area, because people from the area know better. Heck even if I was trapped in the cold I'd still be walking my butt south until I got out. In less than a month anyone should be far enough south that they don't need to worry much about the cold anymore. It only gets just above freezing as far south as kentucky, and snow doesn't even stick around for more than a day. There's no way I'd just sit in a tent in the middle of Chicago with winter on its way. That's not just stupidity, that's also just pure laziness. You've got nothing anyways, so why the heck not just get up and walk away from the cold. And that's exactly why these people are hopeless. Take your tent with you and camp along the way. At least you'll find firewood in the woods between here and the south. You won't find anything in the city to use to keep warm.

Maria I'm about to be, just like you, how about putting wooden slabs some stores give them away, put them under your tent, then a tarp cardboard put your tent on top, then, have a blow up mattress in there a double one, you could even get , pressboard wood, and get some kind of strong crates and put your bed on top plus you have storage also , I feel for you I really do, Im going through a hard time also, I will not put self through living with strangers again because what I have gone through I have been stared at changing getting into shower, then I had listen to my landlady cutting me up to her mother in the most Deming manor you could ever imagine, so I will be living in a tent until I can get into housing, it could be year and half, I am doing everything I can like getting letters from my doctor, social worker, and I seen a phsicatrist once and I also ask her this will take six months off I hope this can help you, one thing you gave me an idea about is getting a dog because well I was nervous about a man finding and killing me but after you hear the things I've heard and hated on so much over nothing , I don't care anymore tbh at least it will all be over God bless you
