      You dont need emotes to move while casting. The last .25 seconds you can move and the cast wont be canceled. After watching the vid....... damn thts interesting to know. I found out about it due healing during knockbacks and them going out after the push. I just did trial and error to feel it out.

      I'm a fresh sprout - so I don't know if it's completely similar, but based on my experience so far it is: the emote lights up as soon as the MP is ' spent' - so similarly, instead of using an emote, you can just watch your MP bar and , during your cast, as soon as you see the MP is spent (turn orange) it means the game has registered the cast and you're free to move / slide cast.
      Of course, your MP bar should be significantly large enough for you to notice the ' spending' so an emote icon might work better for you. Personal pref I imagine; I've just learned to slidecast on ' MP spent' myself.

      "Physician, heal thyself."
      One of the cardinal rules of the medical community and from ancient times (Greek, I believe) - a dead doctor cannot heal anyone. It's similar to the saying "a dead DPSer does 0 dps".
      I remember playing WoW at some point the Devs realized this and gave all the healers something that would passively heal themselves as they healed others because of how often healers would forget this. Believe me, it's not at all uncommon. :)
      AOE healing here and there helps with this, and as a WHM, just remembering to throw a Regen on yourself here and there can usually go a long way to patching you up.

      @peppermint7152 Před 2 lety +8

      If you repeatedly run the same content, you'll probably develop a mental spreadsheet without even putting one to paper--which is the point I believe Momo intended to illustrate. It's something that comes naturally and is applicable to all roles (e.g. DPS mitigation cooldowns, rotation adjustments to match the flow of the fight, etc)
      You're not likely to encounter actual spreadsheets in game unless you're progging an ultimate.

    Big problem I have with healers in ffxiv (and this is coming from someone who mained scholar in SB and did AST at high lvl in ShB) is this toxic notion that has built up over the years that you SHOULDNT heal "Only the last hp matters" "If the dps are eating avoidable mechs its their fault" etc. It tends to just result in people sitting at low health and dying to raidwides while the healer spams their dps skill. Then a cascade of rez panic, oom healers and eventual wipe. For some reason it seems to be a very difficult concept for a certain mindset of healers in this game to understand that "Dont overheal" and "Dont heal until the last second" are completely different things even if they toe the line.

    • @williamnolen9695
      @williamnolen9695 Před rokem

      I fell into this mindset recently and kept thinking my job isnt to heal, its to keep the party from dying. I started playing sage though and getting adderstings when my shields break and it has completely flipped my mindset, instead of purely reactive healing, I am now getting rewarded with free toxicon attacks when I proactive heal. Making my mp management so much easier and making me feel like I have gotten better at all healing jobs

  • @JeffRimer
    @JeffRimer Před rokem +1

    I'm coming to this video a year after it was released and it's still super helpful. Just the concept that FF 14 healing is more proactive than reqctive is a big mentality shift that will help me out.

  • @funnycathehe
    @funnycathehe Před 2 lety +7

    very good video but a quick thing with the slidecasting emote trick - the emote lights up at around .35 seconds remaining when you can slidecast at around .5s remaining so it isn't something to rely on once you have learned to slidecast comfortably

    • @FFXIVMomo
      @FFXIVMomo  Před 2 lety +3

      it usually glows at .4s but you can move slightly earlier than when it glows actually it's just when learning it can be a good tool. I don't know if it's in those clips but if you move before it actually glows but you slidecast registers it'll glow up earlier than normal.

  • @Aitherea

    I was always taught NOT to use regen before a tank pulls because then the mobs come at me instead of the tank xD which is annoying for most tanks I've come across. But staying close and using it anyway is an interesting idea.

    • @FFXIVMomo
      @FFXIVMomo  Před 2 lety +2

      Either you had inexperienced tanks or you weren't utilizing it properly. I've done regen prepull and never had issues even with less experienced tanks because if you pull aggro for a couple hits it's fine as you're next to the tank for them to pull back.

      Yep. Same for me like when I'm tank. If someone put on me HoT before I go in crowd, I sometimes cancel this HoT or it will be like with dps who try to do dps while tank doing big pull "Good luck with aggro man, I'm not going to back and again hit enemy if you can't wait 10 seconds". And playing on AST 90+% of times I use my lovely nocturnal sect for mitigated dmg. (Sad because of 6.0 AST's sects)

    I main healer and I tend to watch videos like these to get an idea of what kind of information is out there for newer healers. And in my experience, it's kind of a mess. There are a lot of videos out there with a fair amount of sound advice that, unfortunately, also have some very awful advice (e.g. "Save benison for tankbusters!") This makes it very difficult for me to recommend a video to anyone lest newer players develop bad habits.
    This is the first video I've watched where it's obvious that the creator actually does main healing and play it at a high level. This is an excellent starter guide. Thank you. Moreover, I'd also like to thank you for making a couple points:
    1) Precast regen/aspected benefic really does help a lot during dungeon pulls provided you stay close to the tank. This is something I see a lot of tanks complain about (presumably a holdover from SB, where enmity management was more difficult), so I'm happy to see someone finally dispelling that notion. Personally, I try to stay a few steps ahead of the tank if I don't have sprint, otherwise at their side at all times.
    2) Thank you for reminding healers to focus on party health before raising. This is one of the most crucial rookie mistakes I see healers make time and time again (even in ultimate raids, sadly). I'd even go so far as to say you shouldn't swiftcast a res before ensuring that the party is healthy. Sometimes a single gcd is all that stands between your party and death.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical Před 2 lety +1

      I think it's because of the levels we're talking about.
      For example, if advising a BRAND NEW healer, I WOULD recommend they save Benison for tankbusters (especially if they have a GNB or ESPECIALLY DRK tank in case they pop their invulns). Bene isn't a great reactive heal because of the weird lag delay thing it has, and has a long CD to boot, making it preferably used as an emergency backup for new healers.
      On the other hand, once a healer has gotten used to using oGCDs for spot healing with Tetra and pre-shielding tank busters with Divine Benison, then shifting Bene into a more normal place in one's rotation makes sense.
      There's also a difference between if we're talking DF, PF, or a static, and even which fight - for example, a popular Titania cheese was to tank invuln 3 of the 6 strikes of her lightning tether swap attack. With a DRK, this obviously necessitated a use of Bene. HadEx also had a similar mechanic of solo tanking the buster cheesing.
      So here, it depends on both the skill level of the player the video is for, the level of content they're doing, and the type of party they're grouped with.
      I think that's why you get so much variability. The only way to avoid this is to give ridiculously vague "advice" that is mostly common sense (always be casting) or not really specifically helpful, and even those can be a bit wonky sometimes.

I healed like every Content till the last expansion. I Leveled my Sage in FF after reaching 90 with my Dragoon and its like day and night. Dungeons where fine till i reached max Level. My tank was limit testing me the whole time but it was very fun. Just healing like i knew it from my former MainGame very many years. Now at the Endgame i have a little Problem with my "Role" in a Party. I dont like the Idea to be a DPS-Player who Heals "sometimes". One video I think could be helpful is how to use FFlogs to improve as a player, Xenos recently did one and I think it was informative. Since I started my own raid team this tier I have come to realize lots of players don't really understand how to use logs to improve I think doing something similar to the video Xenos did but for healing would be really helpful for players and healers looking to improve.

    For anyone who watches this video in prep for picking up sage as your first healer, I'd suggest working your way up dungeons and adding skills to your hot bar. Like first a lvl 30 dungeon, then 50, and so on.
    Healers are unique where they have a ton of skills, making it hard to remember them all. And when poop hits the fan you may freeze, not knowing what to click. Making these skills become second nature will help, compares to just jumping into a lvl 70 dungeon.
    Also, rely on your Regen. It can do almost all the work for you at times. This is perhaps the most important skill to learn as a healer. Knowing how strong your Regen is. I've seen many players multi cast aoe heals after large raid wides, when in reality, a Regen skill will often top them off before the next raid wide.

      I'd add a correlation to this: If you play an existing healer and swap to Sage (especially from SCH), a lot of abilities are SIMILAR. It helps to put them in a similar place on your action bars. I did this years ago when I went from WHM to dual maining WHM/SCH. Putting my small and large single target heals, main AOE heal, and damage spells in the same place for both made it a lot easier to pick up.
      While each healer is distinct, they all have a nuke, DoT (okay, SGE has that modifier for that, so put it where your DoT ability is now), a small and large single target heal, at least one AOE heal, a strong oGCD single target heal, an oGCD AOE heal, and at least one button that mitigates incoming damage. Oh, and the staples of Swiftcast, Raise, Lucid, and Surecast. Also Sprint and Limit Break.
      Putting these in the same place on your bars across healers lets you leverage muscle memory to your advantage, and can also help prevent accidental fat-fingering of things you DON'T want to use at the wrong time, like LB.

    Love this video, lots of great information. I moved over from WoW about a year ago and have been wanting to pickup healing in FF but have been a bit intimidated because of how different it feels, and was procrastinating because Dragoon was so fun. This definitely took the edge off the intimidation factor, and I'll def look into your other guides as I start leveling one of the healers (SCH or WHM not sure which yet). One question I've had for a while though is, is it possible to do mouseover casting macros in FF? It made healing way easier in WoW and I have to confess I was quite spoiled to it lol.

      Macros cannot be entered into the action queue, so you'll likely have to spam the button to get it to work or repeat the command multiple times in the macro to reduce failure chances.
      For example
      /ac "Tetragrammaton"
      /ac "Tetragrammaton"
      /ac "Tetragrammaton"

      /ac "Tetragrammaton"

    Great video but healing in wow is also proactive, healers have to ramp and plan ramps out. Being a reactive healer in wow is actually worse than being reactive in xiv just because of how vastly different the kits are. You can't be reactive when your kit requires you to ramp up to be effective.

      To be fair, healing ARR content is a bit harder mechanic wise as WHM because running out of MP is extra easy and because you have little to no insta cast healing tools (Only benediction iirc) Fortunately, you get a lot of tools later on and it gets a whole lot easier and more dynamic so if you're struggling dont sweat it too much

    Been sat testing interrupt timing for 30 minutes and checking via recording for the exact timer and it just seems so inconsistent and changes what you can get away with by big fractions of a second each time. Is it tied to a really low server tickrate or something so there's a huge uncertainty period based on how soon you happened to do it after the server last communicated with the client?

    With the endwalker changes to make all healers have a 1.5 second cast with a 2.5 second recast, the ability to slide cast won't be as crucial. Having said that, it can still be beneficial to have that extra .5 to move.

    What confuses me the most is what sect to play, because by using the logic for big pulls you should go nocturnal for the shield to mitigate or that's what i think at least, but i find my tank dropping low. Hi. I don't main AST. I main WHM. But I have played AST in every level of content, all the way up through Ultimate. And I do play it in dungeons regularly.
      Prepull Aspected Benefic (and remain close to the tank) for the regen. After that, Earthly Star and Essential Dignity should be the bulk of your healing on large pulls. Also be sure to use Celestial Intersection on CD. That shield adds up a lot.
      When that's not enough (e.g. if party DPS is a little low, or the tank is squishy), be sure to use your regen abilities (i.e. Celestial Opposition, Collective Unconscious) before the tank drops to critical health, somewhere around ~80%. You need to ensure the tank lasts long enough for regen to have value. Usually just one of these abilities is enough, but on especially large pulls you may need to use both if either your tank or the DPS are turbo sandbagging.
      Finally, when all else fails, Synastry. Synastry + Benefic II provides insane GCD burst healing. Ideally, you should never use it (i.e. GCD heals bad), but when you have no other options it's great. Couple with Swiftcast or Lightspeed if you need even more upfront burst.
      As you may've gathered, I don't use Nocturnal in dungeons much at all. Spammable shields sounds nice in theory, but in practice, you want to spend most of your time DPSing (and regen offers more effective healing overall). That being said, you can stance dance between pulls for a bit more throughput, i.e. swap to Nocturnal, Aspected Benefic (for the shield), then swap back to Diurnal. Arguably overkill, but it's free additional shielding. Coupled with Neutral Sect, you can also generate shields to make a SCH blush on a boss prepull.

You can let them do it... they may finish whatever they're casting, rather than cast raise before the corpse hits the floor, but hey... that DPS should have moved faster anyway.

    I really like the informative video and I didn't know about the emote even though I've been doing savage raids. However I think the video might be misleading for actual new players or people getting into healers, atleast the format of the video is because it says *introduction*.
    An example would be that the video immediately starts out about raids and how you should pre-plan ahead but since it's mentioned that this is just fundamentals and the mentality of a healer should have, it kinda implies that every dungeon every trial every normal raid content healers should go look up a spreadsheet from the perspective of a player with a lvl 1 conjurer.
    I think it would be better to start with the early levelling part because normal dungeons is probably 90% of the content that players do.

I have found that setting up my bars similar to how my keyboard is, For example. the way your TXV is setup would throw me off, t x v are fine binds, nothing wrong with that, but where they are placed on your screen, can often help you find them in an "oh shit" moment when you are flustered. My bars are very similar to yours, however the ordering of the binds on them is what changes. Another way to show this would be -
