Jamming on my JD-800: The Otherworldly Sounds of Roland's Onetime Digital Flagship Synth

- I pull out the Roland JD-800, Roland's 1990's digital flagship synth, to explore some of the sounds it can create. I use my Boss RC-505 MKII looper for a bit, then give up and just play sounds as I find them. This synth is an absolute classic, and it has a monster sound.

Roland did an outstanding job on the VST recreation of the JD 800.
I remember my original unit back in the day with fond memories along with the XP50.
And no red glue issues causing the keybeds to fail on the VST version either.

Yeah I belive that is a very common issue.
I sold mine after a few years so I never ran into that issue myself but yeah it's quite common.
I second that! It was my first choice as a pick from having an ultimate sub. Jupiter 8 was other.

As someone who's just getting into making music and has limited experience with an all-in-one synth/looper, I found this to be insightful and interesting. Seeing the workflow and experimental nature of the process is encouraging and reassuring.
I enjoyed it. Like seeing the creative process.
Great sounds. Thanks for the demo.
Cool. I like hearing what sounds different synths can make.
Man I love that synth!
Now you just have to get the Daddy .......... JV-990 and the JV-04 synth card .
Seriously, I'd love a 990
@@SlaserX they do come up for sale but you have to move fast it was sod's law i broke and got one off ebay in the USA then two weeks later one came up local and got that one as well at nearly half the price ...
I got to get my Roland’s keytar out it’s be a long long time thanks 👍
Still got 2 of these Scott! (was 3!!), and the ubiquitous 990 rack with Strings Ensemble card set & Vintage Synth expansion welded in there! 😂 Defo one of the best 90' digital synths ... reminds me to spend more time with them though 😮, as distracted by new HW like Mini Freak, Osmose, etc. .... 🍻🥳🎉🎹🎵🇬🇧
Great synthe Scott but the deepmind 12 has some sounds from the jd 800 but still will love to own one in Japan they are so rare those days
For me everything after the JX-10 (if you can get a programmer for it) makes more sense as a VSTi, but I appreciate some folks just like hardware. Whichever path chosen as shown here some great sounds can be had.
Nice one Scott 👍🏻
Hi Scott!! Another great video!! (as expected) :) Hey How do you like the Looper you're using? (Mainly in terms of using it to craft ideas rapidly without the DAW.... I'm in mostly 100% keyboard/synths in the studio). I've been contemplating the one you're using and after some research it seems like a good fit in the studio to have as a powerful composition tool....
@scottssynthstuff..... Also, any recommendations on how you're hooking it up for use with multiple synths? I'm using 2 patchbays, so I just imagine I'll just add it as another effect there and plug and play whatever synth I want....
It's super powerful, and once you get your head around how it works, and get used to it, you can actually perform with it. I'm not at that level, but there are a lot of people who are. I use it exactly as you say - as a scratchpad to come up with ideas. In terms of standalone hardware loopers, it's definitely the top of the line.
I have a dedicated send on my mixer that sends all of the synths in my studio to the input of the RC-505 looper, and then an input on the mixer that comes from the RC-505. The mixer is set up so that the incoming signal from the RC-505 is NOT routed to its send, so it doesn't feed back. :) That way I can just play ANY synth in the studio and it just works, records right to the RC-505 without having to do anything at all.
@@ScottsSynthStuff Thanks so much for sharing your experience !!! It was really interesting to hear your approach to hooking it up via the mixer and having access to all synths for looping on the fly!! (Another studio design process to think about! I was thinking using my effects patchbay for instant patching of whatever synth I want to loop which is a viable option as well to how you're doing it...) I guess I'll spend another afternoon pondering thinking which is best for me.... Thanks so much as always, for all your excellent content, help and replies!!!
Sounds like my JD-08....just better?
I love some of these older synths. I'm curious why Roland chose to put several buttons at an angle on the upper left of the synth?
That's the Tone Palette
Because... why not?😂
Would love to see you replicate some sounds on the jd08
The JD-800 and the JD-08 are essentially the exact same digital engine - there's not much in the way of replicating - you can take Sysex from one and load it into the other.
@@ScottsSynthStuff wow I had no idea, I thought it was just an attempt at a replica. I actually got a JD-08 yesterday, so I’ll see what I can do with it. Thanks Scott!
Scott... is there a big pad sound like that on the MODX ?
There are several!
