- I realized that the last time I did a tour of my studio was almost two years ago, and plenty has changed in that time. Some synths are new, some have gone away. In this video I tour you through my studio, sample the sounds of every synth, and explain my rationale for having each of the synths.

Aw thanks so much Scott for the shout out!!! YOUR SYNTH COLLECTION IS EPIC xxxxxxxx
Thanks Rachel! Love your work, and your album is wonderful. I bought my Microfreak because of Microfreaking Out! :)
Didn’t even realize these kinds of possibilities for synth routing. Mind blowing.
I've never commented about your hair as your content is so great and your hair is your business (and it was stylish in its own way). But the new hairdo is looking better indeed.
You hair was fabulous let it grow out again Scott!
Totally agree on the System-8 Native engine... and love the the ACB sound
"I don't know why you would do that...but you could" Love that
Your new hairdo looks great! Love the studio tour update.
it's not a studio............... it's a playground !!! wow !!! thank you for the tour.
LOVE the Syntaur T-shirt! Nice 'toys'!
Love the tour of your playground, I wouldn't leave at all, I'd have my bed in there, thanks for showing your fantastic collection❤ its all my dreams in one❤
Great overview, thanks. Lost my locks a couple of decades back (I am a similar vintage to you Scott) felt like I was "undercover" for years...
The cat fluff is vey relatable, my semi feral calico, Lilly Mamslass (I inherited her from my Mum, she always said "whose ya Mamms lass?" so hence the full title ) is shedding like mad and I have dust bunnies all over.
Of all your synths I don't know which tickles me the most... probably the Summit.
I am a late developer re keys/synths so I soak it all up. I like ya stuff. 👍🖖
Love this tour of you very cool studio. Great collection of gear and a great utilization of the X32! Enjoying your channel very much!
Wow. You look more GORGEOUS. Nice gear too.
So nice man. Studio and the new look ma dude! Thanks for the walkthrough Scott. Your vids are top notch. I enjoy them all.
You are much more synth pop now, with new haircut! Great setup. Nothing missing... I am thinking since months to buy Hydrasynth Deluxe. Let's see...
Hahaha.... Well, you were starting to look like The Feral Kid from Mad max.
I told Alex (Vulture Culture) he looks like Ming the Merciless... He actually took it as a compliment ... As he should..
That's a very modern, solid setup you have.
System 8 is awesome. Fantom is smooth and creamy but the System 8 has more of an edge to the sound and can get pretty wild and nasty with a couple of knob turns.
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos and being bald I envied your long hair. Our choice of synthesizers is partly the same. I have the Hydrasynth (4 octave version), MicroFreak, System 8, Summit, JD-800, an Intellijel Atlantis (an SH-101 modular clone I bought because I missed my SH-101) and since two weeks a white Montage 6 (mark 1). I am planning to buy the MioXL as well.
Beautiful setup Scott! I wish I had a room where I could spread out like yours!
Great haircut also 😉
Great video and studio setup!
Looking good Scott!
Whoa! Love the new do! Super stylish
Really cool video! And very nice synth collection! My first synth was the Korg DW-8000, still have it and still love it.
Excellent studio tour and never mind the hair, matters not!
Hi! I stumbled upon your channel while looking for information on synths, and I just had to hit the subscribe button immediately. I look forward to diving into your collection of videos and learning more. Thank you so much for taking the time to create these awesome synth videos!
Thanks for sharing an updated vid of your studio. Grabbed several tips for my home setup.
Lovely gear breakdown. All of it makes a lot of sense. My setup up is a 1/4 of your studio's size! Still, I appreciate the flexibility you have built into your audio and MIDI routing.
Very nice collection 👏.
I started using the mioXL in my live rig and retired the MOTU MIDI Express. So far it’s been flawless and gets my stamp of approval. Thank you for the new video and cheers.
Living the dream
Same for me with the polysix, bought it 1982 when I was in high school.
I was choosing between juno 6, korg Trident and the polysix and it was the program memories and the price that did it.
NO, no questions, I understand your choices and your studio because mine is about the same, I just have the economy version :). Only difference is my 88 weighted key digital pianos since I perform solo piano the last 56 years. The synth part of my studio is my 35-year experimentation with sound design, recording engineering, and orchestration. It's 100% hardware using four 8channel analog mixers (32) subbed into 8 channels into a 24 track ZoomR24 hardware SD recorder. Three analog synths mostly just for building new synths into my Black Box sampler. The rest are digital synths with specific tasks (that they do best) assigned to them. For the past 15 years been recording Vangelis style, with a floor full of pedals, all in one take. Unlike Vangelis I use pattern sequencers and clips on the sampler for transitions and backing when two hands and two feet aren't enough. Sound and effects design, and pattern sequences, are made specifically for each song using: 1) Typical subtractive. 2) Yamaha DX FM. 3) Sample layers. 4) Acoustic instruments I play into a sampler for clips. 5) VAST/FM/KVA module design from the Kurzweil. All instruments positioned in a 7x7 foot space for live play.
1) Roland RD-2000 = pianos
2) Roland Fantom O6 = launching clips from the 4x4 pads
3) Roland JunoDS = Vocoder multi- layer internal Juno + Korg Triton.
4) Roland Gaia = complex textures and solo's. Huge stereo fields.
5) Yamaha DX = layered with Gaia for deep textures and evolving solos.
6) Yamaha MX49 = controller mostly for Gaia/DX
7) Roland E-A7 = pattern sequencer by creating my own styles.
8) Korg Krome = Alternative sounds for the pattern sequencer of the E-A7
9) Arturia MicroBrute = bass lines from the E-A7
10) Korg Minilogue = Solo from the E-A7
11) Korg Miniligue XD = solo from E-A7
12) 1010 Music Black Box = adding acoustic instruments like guitar played in for clips like chord progressions.
13) Korg Electribe2 = more drum options MIDI slaved by the E-A7
14) Kurzweil PC4 = VAST massive texture sequences layered with 4 Roland Boutiques.
15) Yamaha DGX-670 = piano solo's only. (THE incredible - editable digital I have waited for since the first digital piano made, the first true Dpiano instrument).
Props that u have the summit it’s the one I have my eye on
Great video Scott and I would really like an in-depth video on the X32.
Cool hair and awesome content!
Congrats on the Captain Pike hair
I like your reasoning and that made it harder to avoid subscribing in order to prevent having GAS 😆 as we share similar sentiments about hardware.
Yes your Colbalt can sound like the Juno though not quite the same murky flavor, nobody would care in a mix but the Juno itself is just so beautifully built and be it purely psychological, sounds just that tiny bit better than anything emulated.
Nostalgia? Perhaps, Behringer has made it their #1 business. DM 12 desktop almost had me thinking that I could skip a Kiwi kit for the 106 and have a monster 106 but I have no space currently and talk about crappy keys, definitely a module for DM
The Colbalt was disappointing for me other than the Kawai S5000 of the 90’s build quality. I ashamedly bashed it a bit and had to move on before updates improved it significantly. Fatar rules! Obviously the Opsix and Modwave are just modules which have those keys there for checking your pads while writing them.
Ginger red wig,
Andy Warhall wig,
Bavid Dowie wigs so hell with these goofballs. I'm grateful you take the time to help us make better decisions. A Merkin is what all those silly complainers need?🤸😹
My students would say your haircut is "fresh". For the record I have never commented on your hair :). My studio is only 10x20. I am envious of your square footage!
I'm curious about the one hiding under the cover!
Me too! The Astrolab? 😊
I have a feeling it's the new 8-voice Moog Muse 😬
@@ronenpeled6428 ooooh 🙃
Yeah, that piqued my interest as well. I'm betting it's a Moog Muse as well. Astrolab doesnt make much sense since there are already loads of videos on that thing, so certainly shouldnt be any vail of secrecy required for it lol.
Love the Polysix. I have one also with the Kiwisix upgrade. Like you I will never sell it. I also have a Roland Jupiter 80 and Moog Taurus pedals.
Don't listen to the trolls Scott. Hair looks great either way. I dug the 80s Richard Marx helmet and I also dig the tidied-up wave-pomp. Do what YOU like! Thanks for showing us around. Cheers.
🥰How Good It Is To Have A Keyboardist Family🥰
Aww, I liked the long hair! I would have just said “F” the commenters, wear your hair the way you want, proudly! Anyway, the new do is nice too. And nice studio. I look forward to when you’re allowed to reveal your secret piece of gear! And I’m a big MODX/Montage fan too.
Thank you very much! I'm curious to hear about your experiences with the Behringer mixers over time... I got an old second-hand Behringer mixer and it is of very poor quality, switches, potentiometers, sockets, all very flaky... The same experience I have with the DeepMind 12 and Odyssee from Behringer, it works (and is cheap), but all not very high-quality.
Your cat is cute, mine was very hungry while I was watching, got a lot of meows in-between 😅. He must be patient, food is at six o'clock (and he got 10 minutes earlier today!)
Never change yourself to please others. Do it only to please yourself.
Roland Fantom is my #1 go to synth but would also love to have a new Montage. Rompers are so much more today.
Great collection and love your channel! The Montage is such a complete synth and fully agree on you there. Question, do you power down all the stuff each night and use some kind of central power distribution system?
I have UPS's on everything, and yes, everything gets shut off (individually) when not in use. Modern synths with computers in them don't always take nicely to being powered off unexpectedly.
@@ScottsSynthStuff cool, I have slightly more modest setup with 6 Roland and Yamaha keyboards (MODX7 but so want a Montage M). I run it all through a ART power distrubtion system and love the big red switch to power it all on. Not seen any issues with just powering things off but some synths might be more sensite I guess.
Such a dream room 😂
Bello/Magnifico.😱😱😱😱😱😱👑🍾
Great studio tour Scott. I am obviously super jealous of all your awesome synths and gear. Wish I would have kept some of the first synths I owned. (CZ 101) Sigh.
Anyways, my question for you is about mixing. Headphones VS Studio monitors. Which one (for you) gets the best results? Plus, I am curious if you use a subwoofer with your studio monitor setup.
Thanks Scott.
I'm virtually always mixing on monitors. I will use headphones if there is something buried that I can't make out, and then when I'm mastering, I'll listen on various different headphones (and in the car) to get an idea of what it sounds like in different environments.
thanks for the video and insight to your studio setup :) makes me think how to improve on my setup.
just one thing, maybe lock the focus on your camera while filming lol the auto focus was a bit distracting for me. (I've just subscribed)
Yeah, I normally do, but obviously forgot for the shot where I was near it, causing the focus to hunt all over the place. I didn't realize it until much later when I was editing the video.
Nice Studio Tour - thanks for sharing the update with us. :o) I would be curious about the cables you`re using - and how you made your run through the room (especially if you use any kind of snakes - and which brand has a wide enough splice for key-stands use).
Have a look at my original build video - I talk about them, and there are a list of the snakes I used in the video description: czcams.com/video/fIY7g_wWquc/video.html
Thanks for the studio tour! Thinking about ergonomics, I was wondering how it works for you to have your computer/DAW away from your keyboards. When you record keyboards do you need to run back and forth between desk and keyboard for each take?
When window shopping for desks so far I think the "AZ Studio Sit-Stand Studio Desk" would be really awesome.(youtube doesn't allow links, duh) I imagine having this with a Montage M8x on the shelf underneath. But in reality I'm sure the Montage would be too big and besides I don't have the spare money for any of this anyway.
I don't like my desk being really high (I use this computer a LOT) and having it too high makes my wrists sore. So I can't really have a desk that would fit a keyboard underneath it. For the most part, I use the Fantom-06 on my left for working with the DAW, but for recording, I have a two-bar count-in set up as default in Cubase - so I can hit record, move to whichever synth I need, and then play.
I love my MioXL
Nice!
X32 great choice for central control, Kebu also does same.
ho cool style isn't it! I like your new hair style !
Radio shack had some great shit. Great mixer
Fantastic setup! How do you monitor / what studio monitors you have and where are they located?
Thank you for your tour, I found it very interesting!
One thing I was wondering though, when you connect your synths to the X32 (which is via the patchbay if I recall correctly), do you connect them in stereo or mono (aka use 2 channels per synth)?
I'm currently on the lookout for something similar and also found the rack version of the X32 very interesting but I also heard that Behringer will release a successor to the X32 (kind of a smaller WING version) sometime in the future.
Didn't mind the hair at all by the way and I don't understand why this should be a reason not to tune in.
You got it - for the synths with stereo output, they take up two channels, and mono output synths take up one channel.
Love your channel Scott, and I've never had any thoughts about your hair. It's fine either way, or any way you prefer it. Really cool studio too. One thing, please use manual focus on your cameras because focus hunting is really distracting and bothersome.
Yeah I will normally lock the focus when I'm going in and out of frame like that, but I forgot this time, and didn't realize it until a couple days later when I was editing this video.
Great Studio!!!!.....My husband bought me my first syth Yrs ago the System 1.....baby of the 8.....since than .... MiniNova..... JDXI.....We are budget synthHedz.....as You can see. Your hair is still nice 🧟.....was joking on last comment....maybe.
Great video Scott, and nice hairdoe, makes you look younger and yet wise beyond the ears.. pun intended 😊
Nice hair cut mate. hahaha btw Yamaha is my number one then Korg and at last Roland. I have the Fantom 0 but the sounds sound like 20 years a go.
Love the studio tour and new hairstyle! 😎 Can't wait to see what your not allowed to show 🤫 Will you be getting the new Arturia Astrolab, would really value your opinion on that 🤔
The Astrolab is an interesting idea, but it seems primarily targeted towards live players - you can't do sound design, it's just a massive preset library with a few macro knobs. I'm also not thrilled with the screen-on-a-knob idea, which may look cool, but is terrible UI/UX.
- I always liked your hair, long or short. I wished I had hair like that. Or hair, lol 😀
- Nice studio tour. Nice setup.
I noticed you had no Kurzweil. I was thinking about the PC4-7 Do you like Kurzweil? Also, What brand A- Frame stands are you using for your synths? Fantastic setup.
I miss the hair! The audio system is as important as the synths themselves. I was wondering what you use if you get to that later or not. I have the Opsix or I let my brother use it, M8x, did have the Fantom but nothing else in common. I have the Oberheim OB-X8m reprise, Deckard's Dream MKII, Yamaha YC73 w/SeqTrak attached, Waldorf Iridium module with 5 engines, Osmose, Korg PA5x, Yamaha CP1 for sale. I don't really play all I have so I'll sell something if I'm not in love with it. I like all the categories including Digital Synth, Arranger, Stage Board & True Analog. Surprisingly the Yamaha SeqTrak adds a serious AWM2 selection with real FM for pennies with an app.
I love your studio and all the synths. I wonder, other than YT videos, what is your main use of all these keyboards to make money? I also notice that other than the wavestate and opsix, you don't seem to have a Kronos or Nautilus among your boards.
Make money? With music? Well actually I do, a little bit, I do some remixes and backing tracks for people, and of course this channel. But mostly it's just for the love of it. I think the Kronos or Nautilus would duplicate a lot of what I have with the Fantom and Montage (which already duplicate a bunch between them). I've used Yamaha for many years, I never got into the Korg workstation line.
I cannot fathom why in 2024 people aren't using a mio. I see people drawing midi schematics and writing dissertations on optimizing midi mergers... And I click one button and I'm done, so bravo on the XL.
I lucked into a used one at a fantastic price about 4 months ago. Even though it’s overkill for my small setup I can no longer imagine not having a midi router of some kind (e.g. MioXlL, MRCC, RK-06, etc). Simplifies everything. Only feature it could add is a built in master clock.
Cool setup! What's the 3 tier stand that the Montage and Summit are sitting on?
It's something I actually made out of a couple different On-Stage stands and some accessories. I've got links to it in the video description.
Nice setup! I don't see any DSI synths or Moog ( not the beginner ), also no 3rd wave ?
I would love a Prophet X, but now it's discontinued...I think the Summit covers a LOT of the DSI ground. I would LOVE a 3rd wave, but $$$$$
What are your thoughts on the Juno-X?
I am going for the Juno sound(s) but am still wondering if I should just get a System 8 or a 106.
Thanks for the tour. Can we all just admit that the JD800 doesn't sound mighty at all? And oh, great hair!
Pssshhhh no way! The JD-800 is just a matter of having the right patches in it; those factory sounds don't come close to doing it justice. It's an absolute monster once you dig below the surface. Easily one of the best digital synths of all time!
No, the JD-800 definitely sounds huge. It punches through every mix, I find myself using it often because of that. There's a reason you heard it absolutely everywhere in the late 80's and early 90's.
Curious if you feel the Fantom EX warrants keeping the JD-800? Does the JD sound same/better?
They sound a lot the same, but the EX version lacks...punch and sparkle of the JD-800? Don't know what it is, but to my ear. the actual JD sounds better. Plus it has a massive panel of controls dedicated to its engine, where the EX is pages of menus and limited controls.
That hydrasynth sound big and analog. Hows the keybed on that thing. High end?
No Moog, Sequential or Oberheim ‘anything’??
I am curious to know how you are dealing with the Midi Latency on the iConnectivity mioXL ? Do you always print your audio, some of us dont want to commit to printing audio, therefore keep everything in Midi domain like the old days and then print. I never had much success with Midi Usb timing, as no one writes drivers for it, unless you Logic which they still support their old Emagic box, but I am Cubase user for ages and do love Bitwig, where midi latency is adjusted on the fly as it pings the external gear and calculates the round trip. Thank You!!
Cubase does the same thing, for both MIDI and audio (interface) - it works out the latency. So I don't think about it, it just works. I do the same - I keep things in MIDI and then print the audio when I think I have it. But I keep the MIDI, so if I want to go back and change something, I can recreate it and re-print the audio again.
@@ScottsSynthStuff I never seen a video or anyone show how to work it out as fast as Bitwig does it automatically and its bang on, even when I put in the latency amount, still is never correct.
killer studio. no drum machines?
Great tour ! Thanks so much - ( might have sounded better if you had huge hair !! ( only kidding - you SOUND awesome ! ))
Scott,
If you had only a Fantom08 or MODX+8 which would U go with (I'm a MODX owner)...
If I had to choose I would take the MODX for sure.
I wasn’t going to be rude. Much better!
Nice plethora of synths! Well the only one I have in common with you is the Fantom 06. I love it -- personally I think it's the best "workstation" I've owned. I have the original GAIA. I'm not even sure if I'm going to upgrade to the new one. I'm not interested in the wavetable side of it -- and personally I think the original one looks cooler with its blackish livery.
Both GAIAs have their strengths and weaknesses. I *almost* ended up keeping the old one, and I suspect one day I'll be sorry I sold it. :)
I can relate to that!@@ScottsSynthStuff
As a person with very little hair, I can only think most of the hair haters were possibly...bald...? But, I have to say, your new lid is very impressive, indeed. OK, quick JD 800 question; your red glue vid inspired me to finally open mine up and get to work. A number of issues, but the last one I'm dealing with is the white touch sensitivity felt. Lots of red glue saturation spots. I've ordered the new felt strip you recommend ( red ). Thinking it might be better to just replace the whole strip. You repaired segments, not the whole strip. Was that simply because only a few spots required replacing ? You mentioned the touch sensitive strip is very delicate to be very careful with this operation. Just want to make sure I'm not going down the wrong road if I choose to replace the whole strip. Thank again for your videos !
I *think* I mentioned later that this did not work well. The aftertouch ended up being different on different keys, so after fighting with it for a while, I finally ended up just pulling up ALL the original felt, and replacing it with one large strip, which is probably what I should have done in the first place.
@@ScottsSynthStuff Thanks Scott !
What is that below the Fantom 06 and blurred out?
It's a secret. :)
✌️❤️
Fun! I understand the 106 thing. I pretty much just use one budget keyboard (Yamaha MX88) and everything else is plugins, but more and more I've wanted something like a 60 or a 106 because it's just so hands-on and intuitive. I wouldn't drop crazy money on a 1 osc synth, but I hear the Big B is making a clone and it'll be calling my name, I think...
The DeepMind is actually modeled pretty closely on the Juno 106, with added effects. That said, if you want a perfect, reliable emulation of it (and some other great synths including the Jupiter 8) a System-8 would probably fit the bill.
@@ScottsSynthStuff The System-8 is amazing, but out of my budget. I like the sub-thousand dollar stuff. I do have V Collection 9 and I like it a lot, but it'd be fun to have real sliders and knobs.
You have two Technics 1210, the 1200s are the silver ones, no?
Had both of them (black and silver), now there´s only one 1210 left.
Nope, they are black SL1200MK2's. I bought them new in 1987 or 1988 if I recall correctly.
i thought you had a cs-80, also what chair do you have
Not sure, it's just some chair that came from Staples. I quite like it, actually.
I think we all aquire tons of great gear that sits in rooms or maybe some kind of studio. Then we have the couple that we play out on when dealing with insufferable noisy lead guitarists and drummers, lol. They never appreciate the sounds we provide anyhow.
Nice to hear your take on some of the gear in your studio. Only one small criticism; The camera's focus hunting is pretty annoying. Could you not just set focus, then turn autofocus off?
Yeah, I didn't realize I was going in and out of frame, normally I would fix the focus before doing that - I didn't realize it until a couple days later when I was editing the video. :(
What type of stands do you use?
They're listed in the description of the video.
FANTOM 6 ! Yessss !
What is your take on the JD XA vs JD800?
The Fantom EX version of the JD-800 does sound very similar - but there's something about the punch and sparkle of the JD-800 that just isn't there on the EX emulation. Plus, of course, on the EX you have to do pretty much everything through the touch screen and menus, where on the JD-800 you have an expansive panel full of controls designed specifically for that sound engine.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! 👶....When I found You ...I said WOW Thats Hott Hair!!!!....video You fixing polysiX.....Well.....NOW I just have to listen...instead of watch & drooling over You. You did make My Husband EXTREMELY HAPPY....He is No longer Jealous.😊
haha it was already cut when you sent your last comment, I had to bite my tongue. :)
@@ScottsSynthStuff You look Great!!!!!❤️🔥
Where's Nord Synthesizers?
I’m really surprised that you don’t have a polybrute. It has its own soul.
Where's the Korg Poly800 and the 61 and I thought you like the 80's haha
I actually did a restoral video already on the Poly 800!
the Hydrasynth deluxe just did a big price drop. So did the explorer. Something new coming??
I'm pretty sure ASM has done this same price drop every year at this time.
