T.Rex - Wembley Empire Pool, 18th March 1972 (Matinee Concert)

  • On 18 March 1972 T.Rex performed two sell-out concerts at the Empire Pool, Wembley (capacity 10,000 per show). They were only the second group to play there - the first having been Led Zeppelin in November 1971 - other than for multi-artist NME awards and charity shows in the 1960s.
The Empire Pool was originally just that - a swimming pool built for the 1934 Empire Games.
Having had three number one singles (with two more at number two) and the Electric Warrior album at number one for eight weeks either side of Christmas 1971, T.Rex were the hottest group in the UK.
Both concerts featured 10 songs, mixing the hits (Jeepster, Telegram Sam, Hot Love, Get It On) with b-sides and album tracks performed by the band (Cadilac, Baby Strange) and as an acoustic interlude (Spaceball Ricochet, Girl and Cosmic Dancer). The encore was a version of Summertime Blues, originally by Eddie Cochran - an artist whose look and music greatly influenced Bolan as a young man.
Both concerts were filmed by an Apple Films crew of five, led by Marc’s big mate Ringo Starr. Meanwhile producer Tony Visconti was recording the sound in the Rolling Stones’ mobile recording facility parked outside.
The concerts shot that day are the only surviving professionally filmed complete T.Rex concerts, representing a unique moment in the history of rock music and revealing the extraordinary power and success of Marc Bolan and T.Rex.

I was there at the evening concert. I was lifted and thrown over the barrier at the front of the stage. A security guard came straight after me but a lady in a large black brimmed hat waved him away and let me sit on the floor beside her. I was literally 5ft from the stage and right in front of Marc. I will never forget her. I still remember every second of it. Marc...forever in my heart. ❤❤❤

As I ran down to the front I bumped into a man with a beard who was filming as they came on stage. He called me the 'C' word ! It was a couple of months later when I saw him on TV that I realised it was Ringo. Had never seen him with a beard before that day

A fabulous snapshot of a long-vanished period in British pop music. Marc was at the height of his powers in 1972, and couldn't put a foot wrong. Iggy Pop was at that concert and was
highly impressed. Bowie and Roxy were just waiting around the corner for their moment of glory. Superbly filmed, this is how Marc should be remembered.

Marc played guitar perfect because there's only two kinds of music there's good music and there's bad music and I will be the judge of that. For somebody that isn't a very good guitar player according to you people are still listening to his music and you must be one of them or why are you here? Evidently you like music by people who aren't very good at playing guitar. You probably like Jimi too that cat sucked at guitar. Upside down and backwards constantly having to bend the strings to make it sound right. He couldn't even hold it right behind his back picking it with his teeth. He was so high he didn't know what he was doing most of the time. You're probably a Chet Atkins kind of guy maybe Pat Boone. That's cool to each their own. Funny how it always took other cultures to show Americans that they had a culture. America sort of invented Rock & Roll in the 50's.... but lost their way. It took the Beatles and the British Invasion to breathe new life into it in the 60's.... and then in the 70's, yet another resurgence with groups like AC/DC, T.Rex, Black Sabbath all kind of taking it back to the meat-and-potatoes version of just drums, bass & guitar. No string section, no brass section (Chicago, Blood/Sweat & Tears). This was 50's Rock and Roll updated for the 1970's. It wasn't fluff/pop/bubblegum like what was coming out of the states.

Rex, Slade, Urriah Heep, etc. Later on I became a Punk as I was 14, but this music from T. Rex led me to it because it was so revolutionary too.

Marc Bolan is a genius songwriter, guitar player and has great Stage presence. I love his look from the long hair and bangs to the platform shoes ,glittery tops and bell bottoms. As my life went on, I learnt to play guitar, keyboards over the years. Played in a few bands and all thanks to this man. His inspiration was my starting point. A big shout out for Steve Currie.
