Thrombosis is a very insidious and dangerous disease that can develop silently and give no symptoms. Thrombosis can even lead to pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. According to the latest statistics in Europe, nearly half a million people die from this dangerous disease, so it is even more worth learning a bit more about it.

✅ What are the main causes of thrombosis?
In a properly functioning circulatory system, blood flows through the veins to the heart. Working muscles make it much easier to pump blood from the legs directly in the opposite direction to gravity. The valves located in the veins prevent blood from flowing downwards. In a situation where the blood wants to turn back, it automatically slams shut and, consequently, closes the way back. If any of the above-mentioned mechanisms fails, unfortunately blood begins to accumulate in the veins. The first symptoms are most often the appearance of inflammation, which in turn causes damage to the layer of epithelium lining individual vessels. A thrombus, which is nothing more than an ordinary blood clot, appears in places where the platelets are damaged. It gradually reduces the diameter of blood vessels, therefore the outflow of peripheral blood to the heart is significantly impeded. If our body does not absorb the clot, unfortunately it can grow to such a point that it completely clogs the vein.
✅ What are the types of thrombosis?
It should be remembered that thrombosis is not a homogeneous disease, therefore several different types of disease can be distinguished. The main breakdown, of course, is where the clot occurs. For example, distal thrombosis involving the veins of the calf can be distinguished. It is one of the most common diseases and, fortunately, it rarely leads to pulmonary embolism. Deep vein thrombosis, in turn, affects the venous system of the lower extremities. With varicose veins, thrombosis of the surface veins occurs very often. We can also distinguish proximal thrombosis, which occurs in the leg, and more precisely in the leg. knee-length. Proximal thrombosis most often leads to pulmonary embolism, therefore it should be diagnosed as soon as possible and effectively treated.
✅ What are the most common symptoms of thrombosis?
As mentioned above, thrombosis can be very dangerous, so it is even more important to find out about the symptoms of thrombosis. The swelling and pain in the legs should be of particular concern. With deep vein thrombosis, the pain should subside when we raise our legs up. When the skin changes its natural color, it is worth using professional help as soon as possible. First of all, pale and gray-blue skin should be disturbing. Fever is also a common symptom of thrombosis. A clot can be identified by the fact that one limb is much warmer than the rest of the body. Chest pain may also occur with pulmonary embolism. If there is unpleasant pressure and breathing problems, call an ambulance as soon as possible. The paresis of the limbs should also cause anxiety. Disrupted blood flow can cause a lack of feeling in the arms and legs. Shortness of breath is also a quiet symptom of thrombosis.
✅ What is the treatment like?
Thrombosis can be treated in many different ways. The most popular method is anticoagulation and thrombolytic therapy. When it comes to anticoagulant therapy, it comes down to preventing the blood clot from growing. The patient is usually given a subcutaneous injection of heparin. In turn, thrombolytic therapy is an attempt to dissolve the clot in the vein. To this end, the patient is administered intravenous streptokinases. There is also surgery. A surgeon's help is indicated in advanced thrombosis.
