Geography Now good but one thing why mali here is not considered a whole country because is a desert
Kind of sad how Mali went from one of the richest countries in the world to one of the poorest in the world
richest man*
Having a rich king doesn't make the country rich, at that time pretty much everyone everywhere was poor
Clerisvaldo Nogueira no the people of Mali when the king was rich were rich, they all had slot of gold
Colonialism.
colonialism, obsolete sahara trade, and islam fundamentalist ruin the country
Senegal should really be in the friend zone! We share many aspect of our culture, moderate Islam and languages!

Keep up the great work!
Did you know Mansa Musa sort of crashed the economy when he did his pilgrimage, he spent so much gold on souvenires and all in egypt, he dropped the worth of gold for a decade or so.
And Mecca
Watch the story In “Extra History”, very cool
I did actually, that's why I mentioned it. But thanks anyway.
I dont think communist have that amount of gold at first place
WOW Frixxed!
I really hope that the situation in Mali can stabilize soon. I've heard some really interesting things.
How many here after the Coup d'Etat in Mali?

Fun fact Mana Musa (i think that was him)made the entire economices of gold useless when he went on his pilgrimage to Mecca
I know that, and, to what you said, I'ma add this: it took a decade for the value of gold to recover.

Love Mali from Bosnia!
Y'all should definitely listen to Oxmo Puccino (slam/rap/spoken word) and Ali Farka Touré (african guitar). Their music is *soooo* good! 😊
Zarathustra Zarath Malian music is so great! For once I actually knew some in the 'famous people' line up because they are musicians I really like 😊
‘Je connosais pas’
does anyone else whistle along with the ending theme? I can't help myself, I do it every time.
Jesse H. No, but I scream the 'NOW' in the intro SUPER loud.
I do both! :D
Yeah I do, but damn i've been looking for the end theme since I know the channel and haven't been able to find it!
Well, he explained it in a video once. I think he said the end theme song was composed by Ken...? I don't know, but it was either Ken or someone else. But then again, maybe it wasn't him. For some reason, I'm thinking of a name that starts with "K". Keith does play bass, but I don't think it was him. But anyway, Barbs said it was composed by his roommate. (or at least, i think it was his roommate... He played the ukulele and whistled a melody over it, and that became the ending theme! :D I don't remember exactly who it was, but that's one cool thing about this channel. So many channels just use royalty free stock music for their intros and outros and whatever, so it's a breath of fresh air to see the people of this channel compose songs for it and be original! ^-^
Yeah me too.. i scream NOW in the intro, and whistle in the end..
I really love Mali music! It's my favorite music! You should know Rokia Traore, Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Omou Sangare, Salif Keita, and a lot of musicians more! ❤️ 🎶
The new queen of French R&B, Aya Nakamura, is also from Malian descent. Also singer and model Inna Modja deserves an honorable mention.
Great episode! Crazy that noone knows Mansa Musa
Please note that the Yassa (Yassa poulet/ Yassa Dieune, with fish/ Yassa Yap with meat, etc) is a dish from Casamance, South of Senegal !
Malian people are really close to Senegalese people too (I'm from Senegal but my great grandmother was from Mali and I have many cousins who are married to Maliain guys 😊) In 1960, Mali and Senegal were even forming one and only country named Federation of Mali
For notable people, you forgot the Tuareg band Tinariwen (they also spent some of their formative years in Libya and Algeria, but you didn't mention them there either! ;) )
They're really interesting. Check 'em out Barbs

Mansa Musa
Richest man in human history
He is nice and kind 🤴
Love ❤️ Mali 🇲🇱
From 🇧🇩🇺🇸
He spent his empire into a depression. The Mansa after him almost killed the economy. I presonally respect the following Mansas who fixed the nation.
Djinn Thought He invested in the Education of Timbuktu and Djenne making them strong institutions of learning. It’s not like 100% of his spending was wasted
@@sjappiyah4071 "Djinn Thought" was just expressing that there's better leader's of the Mali empire that should be praised as much or more than Mansa Musa.
I studied about the Mali Empire in my first year in uni. Mansa Musa is an amazing ruler and was really interesting to study.
I watched this episode because one of our national volleyball players is half Malian. And he did so well in every match he played. So, I'd always been interested and wanted to know about where he was from. Now I know and I'm glad that he lives here where I live since his life is much better here. I hope Mali and its people catch up with other countries and get a better future soon.
I love that I can travel the world with this channel.
THANK YOU.
man i love this series, i learned so much from these episodes and it made me very intrested in geography. Thanks for making such an intresting series!
I'm from mali, I'm from the dogon tribe . So happy to see this 💁🏾♀️🇲🇱.
COOL 🇲🇱
In the section where you listed the names of the famous or notable peoples from Mali or of Malian descent, you forgot to include or mention that Malian immigrant who scaled a building in Paris France to rescue a 4 year old toddler hanging from the edge of a balcony.
Lassana Bathily, the hero of the 2015 Hyper Casher hostage taking, is also from Mali.
👋
I'm surprised Souleymane Cisse, a prolific Malian film director, didn't get mentioned in the famous Malians section. That's like doing the Italy episode and not mentioning Federico Fellini.
Who's that
@@sepulcher8263 federico fellini is one of the most influential italian directors in the 50s to the 70s his most famous films are 8 1/2 and la dolce vitta but hes not very know in the us outside the interested in art house cinema, but he is a really great director go check him out

mali has a lot of history with india. many indians don't know that once mansa musa( richest man in history) sent some of its messengers to explore and those people came to south india( some texts even said that mansa musa himself came here) and they found a lot of knowledgable people in the kerala and tamil nadu state and that time emperor sent some people there to learn and teach things in mali. and in return mansa mussa gave a lot of gold. thats why you will see that in the temples of south india huge amounts of gold ornaments and sculptures are kept( only one temple shri padmanabha swamy temple has gold ornaments and assets of over rupees 1.2 trillion.
If true could you cite the source. I’ve seen another post similar to this and it’s quite interesting

The funny thing is that the map show the region of Gao. He only made a typo for the city
Yep. It's hard to keep track of all the various African Empires that existed throughout time in that region. Ghana, Songhai, Jolof (or Jollof), Timbuktu, Mali itself... and I believe there was a few more in there too. Wild history for them for sure.

Hey Barbs, I would like to submit you an idea, I think it would be a good idea to create a Geography Now discord server where we could interact with you, and share our knowledges about the world and futhermore why not help you with your reasearch. I hope this comment will be seen ^^ much respects from France.
Because the Morroco episode is coming up I'd like to bring up something you missed in the Algeria episode and that is the fact that you said morrocans and Algerians don't get along which is false we're like brothers sharing the same history, language and culture it's just the government who has issues with each other. The people love each other (same goes for Tunisia).
And I'd like you talk a bit more about the berber/amazigh population in North Africa seeing as it's often something many people don't know about and therefore just assumes everyone in North Africa is Arab which is completely not the case.
Sami.B. hey I'm Algerian and I fully agree . nous sommes un seul peuple divisé par des gouvernements haineux, stéréotypés comme arabes alors que nous sommes juste arabisés de langue ,nuance . nous sommes génétiquement amazigh et formons un seul peuple . love from Algeria .
Grabs popcorn* waiting for deluded Moroccans trying to convince themselves they're Arabs lol
Also There are two exclaves of Spain in Morocco and the exclaves gets Moroccan immigrants that escaped Morocco. (I’m a 11 year old in the US)
One Lazy Boi the ones who are trying to storm the fences of Melilla and Ceuta aren't really morrocans for the most part but rather west Africans (from countries such as Mali and Niger) who usually travel through Morroco to get to Europe.
And btw it's kind of an unnecessary fact to point out seeing as it isn't really related to my comment nor anything that geography now usually talk about in their videos.
Gennaro Savastano shhh let them believe the lies I'd rather not have an argument under my comment with angry people screaming at me for saying I'm Amazigh and telling me that we (North Africans) are all Arabs.
Can't wait for the Malta episode!!
I love this video!!! I'm so sorry, I was playing LEGO Batman: The Videogame on XBOX 360 last night. I always love to watch new videos and your Flag Fan Friday!!!

Filler week idea: All the unrecognized countries/ independent movements in the world ........ that's actually an idea for several filler weeks
PeopleCallMeLucifer He has plans of doing it after going all of UN recognized countries.
Also, as researching, filming, and editing those unrecognised countries takes basically the same amount of work as regular countries, there's not much filler about them.
Mashed like so hard on this. On twitter he posted a picture of various unrecognized states in Africa, though many were historical and this isn't a history channel it'd be cool if he'd do videos on 'em anyway because they can be very controversial but he did such a great job with Israel, he could pull it off
I was thinking of just listing all of them (micronations included)

@soryxl I am glad to have visited Gao 2yrs ago
@soryxl I was there playing with a Rockabilly group, entertaining the UN-Troops. In Gao particularly it was tense-ish. The general atmosphere was cool and friendly, but with undeniable sious undertone. Edgy, of sorts. Within a week after we left there was a minor attack on Camp Castor. We left for Koulikoro then, which was just great!
@soryxl oh of course I do, but thank you for being so thoughtful! I also love me some Songhoy Blues & habib Koite too. It was a shame we werent allowed to leave the military bases since especially Koulikoro there was lots of music coming the houses. I so dig the drony desert blues, and Ali Farka reigns supreme.
