I’m watching this on a Saturday night, with a glass of wine. Some would say I should get some friends, I think I prefer tomatoes..
Friends to share the tomatoes but that sounds like a great plan. And a glass of wine is good. Thanks for watching.
Great comment. I love both tomatoes and friends.... which I love more I'm not sure.
Friends are overrated, tomatoes are forever!
It's rude to eat your friends. Have at it with the tomatoes though.

I really appreciate the timestamps. a lot of other great youtube gardeners on here but never take the time to. it is absolutely frustrating having to go back to a video trying to find a certain step you missed or need to hear again. like hey I watched how to plant my peppers step by step but now I'm having to scan through your video frame by frame to catch that 10 second clip where you mentioned something important.
Do you know what a notepad is? It's this very useful invention where you can write down important stuff.

So I just discovered you. I am so glad that you're videos are still up. I've always been a gardener but just accidental. This year because of the high prices of food I want to really capitalize on all of my garden area which is most of my yard. You are very informative and I am very appreciative. I found your trellis videos first and that's very exciting because I just built myself a couple of hoop houses. I can't wait to watch all your videos

I am in Louisiana zone 8 and have started my tomatoes and peppers. Most of what I have done this year I have learned from your videos. You inspired me to make my own starting mix. I use a mixture of two parts coir, two parts worm castings, one part vermiculite, and toss in a bit of perlite. So far the seedings are the best I've ever had. Thanks for the fine instructional videos.
That is perfect. I just started adding in castings as it is pure and non mold and fungus feeding. Interesting fact is with castings, germination might be slower to start but the seed starts benefit in the end.
Thank you Gary .... I was completely glued to the screen.... great way to get all the info needed!!! :-) Looking forward to starting my new garden!!
That's my goal. Save you time by not having to go everywhere and I appreciate the time you took to watch it. Thanks.
Hi Gary, I stumbled on your videos the fall of 2020. Started my first veg garden that spring as I was so inspired. This year I bought your book and have seed started all my veg and now my flowers too. Thanks for these awesome videos.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Dr. Gary, there is so much benefit from growing one's own garden in this day and age. I remember a story my aunt told me many years ago. It goes like this: three little brothers in her neighborhood used to come into her tomato garden and pull green tomatoes off her plants so they'd have balls to play with. Firstly, she took them to the store and bought them each a ball of their own to keep and play with. Then she cooked them some fried green tomatoes to show them these green "balls" were really food to eat, not to play with like a toy. When they were turning ripe, she invited them back each day to show them how they turn red. Then she'd slice a couple and let them eat fresh ripe tomatoes. She didn't think those poor little brothers had ever had a real tomato. 😧🍅😊. She taught them that real food grows in the ground, not at the store where it takes money to get it. (which she knew they didn't have any). Those little kids had a lot of questions of my dear auntie ( who lived in Northern Indiana). The next spring, she gave each of those boys a pot filled with soil from her garden patch and some seeds, tomato, I'm sure she said. The point is, she taught them where real food comes from. As these boys and my aunt got older, they all became good friends until the day my dear auntie passed away. Isn't that a touching story ? It's a true story as she sent me pictures of the brothers, and their nice tom plants with green balls hanging on them. It was a valuable lesson for these poor little kids to learn, I think. My dear auntie, bless her soul. Cheers, Gary, and bless you too, my friend. Bob in Montana.😁🍅😁
Thank you! You explain everything so nice and it's all in one spot! 2 year gardening, 1st time with seeds.
Thanks Gary for all the effort you've put into this video (collection of videos). I'm a beginner but your passion is contagious!
Thanks so much and good luck. I am planning 2019 now!

Dear Gary, a HUGE Thankyou. I just came across your video on Tomatoes and Chillies. I live in E.Africa but buy my seeds when I visit family in the UK. I really went for it this year and tried 6 varieties including from the US which all worked to a varying extent. I also tried Jalapenos this year-perhaps late because we are in winter now. Your step by step videos were just what I needed. I have various books which are good but can't compete with your videos- can't wait to start in late next week (our Jan/Feb over here). Thanks again and Best Wishes.
Hundreds of dollars later I finally find what I've been looking for. Thank you for this.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Hey Gary I had to take a different route this year with my seed starts and I'm going for a grow light box setup. I was going to do a 36 cell tray but it won't fit so I'm thinking solo cups (I can fit 17) my question is Can I grow out 2 transplants in those cups for spring or am I still stuck with cutting out the weaker one?
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) awesome series
Great job Gary - This is probably the most comprehensive coverage for tomatoes and peppers for the zone 7 region available. Have you delved into hydroponics or aquaponics yet? I am following your seed starting guidance for my 2018 garden which will involve traditional soil gardening, hydroponic dutch buckets, aquaponics and straw bale plantings I like the way you posted the comprehensive video and I plan on doing the same picking up after everything is ready for transfer outside. Best of luck on your 2018 gardening endeavors.
is it OK to dry the seeds in a dehydrator?

I decided to grow my own food. I began with sprouts last month. I have tremendous success. Now I want to grow a few veggies in my backyard in area 7, Phila PA. It's too early to plant outside as we've had snow this week and expect some next week too. I will get my cherry tomato seeds, peppers, and cucumber seeds this week along with the other essentials I need. I will begin the seedlings next month and keep them indoors until May. I am excited and inspired by your video. Thankyou !
A little to early, the end of March would be great for peas and the beginning of April great for other cool weather crops like lettuce. We want to get past nights in the 20's.The cool weather crops can take light freezing. Tomatoes and peppers have to wait till all danger of frost is gone and the night stay in the 50's which is yeah Mayish.

I am assuming you are outside of Philly. The row homes do not give anyone much land to work with.
I am 45 miles southwest from you in Chester County.
Even in smaller communities one still has to move outside of the area.
I actually do live in Philly! I am using my small backyard. Since I am allergic to grass I may as well use the area to grow my food. Philly has a granite or slate underneath it's surface and I was advised not to plant directly in the dirt. I am going to make a container garden instead. It's going to be interesting. The ground is still cold even though it's springtime. Hahaha!
I purchased some seeds for spouts and they went bad on me. They have fungus. I cannot eat that!
Dona Davis news update news please
Thank you so much for all your videos!!! I started gardening two years ago, when started I didn’t knew anything about gardening .. when I stuck and I was searching for solutions I found your channel and my second season was so successful ( tomato, beans, cucumber, eggplant, chillies many types of all) .. from seeds growing to harvest . Thanks again !! May god bless you always.
Impressive. Nice work and thanks for watching. Very glad to help.
Louisiana 8b over here. We are having crazy spring weather down here this year. Lots of rain, several hail storms, and two tornadoes in my area just in the last month. I’ve not put my tomatoes and peppers in the ground yet. They’ve been potted up from original containers, cotyledon removed, and planted deep in cups/recycled juice bottles. Your videos have been hugely inspirational and helped me expand my knowledge on growing edibles. I’ve got one raised bed, quite a few containers of herbs/flowers, and the tomatoes/peppers will go into the ground when the weather calms down. I know some have already put their veg in the ground down here. But my work schedule hasn’t been helpful to doing that yet. Huge thank you!!!
Also, what mulch did you use? I’m fighting brambles (dewberry vines and various other stuff) so I really need to mulch.
I use any shredded hardwood. That seems to work the best. Just don't mix it into the depth of the bed. Leave it on top. I scape away the old stuff when planting and then put it back. Thanks for watching. You have a lot going on. Success. ...You can support The Rusted Garden by using this link for anything you purchase on Amazon. It doesn't have to be garden related. Great video, thank you. I use the slats from mini blinds. You can cut them to the size you need and using a Sharpie will keep the labeling easy and permanent.
I was told that. Going to grab some blinds.
Soil fungi is very very beneficial to your plants, nothing wrong with your “moldy” soil.
Thanks so much for the demonstration. I would like to start kitchen gardening soon
I saw a video of a lady who used TULE a netting that she gets from the sewing store that she uses in her garden to deter squirrels from getting to her vegies... thought it was a good idea I love your videos and watch them over and over and learn a lot from you... Thanks
Thanks for watching. Tulle is great to keep egg layers of green leaves.

My peppers haven’t sprouted yet but my tomatoes have 🤔 I planted peppers 2 weeks ago any suggestions
They do like a little more heat. What are the temps of you grow light area.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I use a heat mat light isn’t giving off any heat.
Exactly on pace. Bet your temps are between 70-75 F.
Mine were taking forever. It is cold outside, so I put mine over my floor heating vent and 2 days later they sprouted. So I have learned that they need lots of heat. Otherwise they stay dormant indoors.
Peppers usually take more time to sprout than tomatoes, specially if the seeds are a bit older (dried). Some species of hot peppers can even take up to a month to sprout, even when using a heat mat.
Did they sprout yet (month later)?
Cheers.
Actually cinnamon contain root hormones, and encourages root growth 😉 (honey as well)
I am watching this on a Saturday night, with iced coffee, sitting in my enclosed patio garden "office" (I actually am sitting at a desk) looking out over my outer patio garden. I typically am here from the time I get up until the time I go to sleep. I mostly watch/listen to Gary, Brian (CGTV), CaliKim, Skinny Boy Randy, and the headless body gardener & Molly, from the UK. Everyone has said that I should get some friends. I believe I already do. 5 of them in fact. 😉
Hey thats good company. Sound peaceful too!

Hydrogen Peroxide sprayed on the soil surface also kills fungus gnat larva.
Great to know . Thanks.
The formula is four parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. You can also use an organic method by using nematodes, which can be ordered online. i used some nematodes and they work WONDERS! Nematodes are microscopic worms that feed on fungus gnat larva! :-)
BT Israelensis works on flies and mosquitoes as well and does not let the larva mature. It will not harm warm blooded animals. I soak 2 tea spoons of the granules in water for a day and run them through a sieve, pore the liquid in a 16 to 28 once spray bottle top the bottle off with water and spray the soil. It works great in the house on white flies and fungus knats as well as out side . I don't know about any cold blooded animals' but I don't imagine how it could harm them.
Great video & I love the "indexing" format. Good, solid information.
As far as propagating seed, I've used simple vermiculite for tomatoes and peppers, transplanting when the first set of true leaves appear. Its can be tricky doing the transplants as the vermiculite will not hold together if too wet or too dry. I've found that if I water fully a day before transplanting, the planting mix will be a perfect texture. I've also used commercial propagating mixes with equal success.
Gary thanks so much for the video! Your help is going to go a long way this year!
Very glad to help. Good luck.

Thanks for condensing these videos into one video. I grew my tomatoes and peppers for the 1st last year based on your method but only Organic materials and fertilizers and I had huge harvest of both of them. I was canning and dehydrating them for months. Thank you!!
So glad it helped. Sound like you were highly successful. I saw a fellow that dehydrated the tomatoes and then pulverized them. I might try that this year.
This is my Saturday night movie this week..thanks for the comprehensive coverage,Gary..I feel more motivated to get through my issues with tomatoes and peppers now

Thank you so much for posting this - I watch a lot of gardening videos and some are so long without a lot of substance. This may be long, but it's packed with information, genuinely a one-stop-shop (and including the digital table of contents was clever and kind). You talk in such an engaging but non-threatening way, it's easy to soak up the info. You remind of my favorite plant bio professor from college (although his specialty was ferns).
Hugely helpful, very informative - my tomatoes and peppers are well on their way to a great yield this year. Thank you!!
Glad to share. Very appreciated. Good luck this year.
I need a an 18x18 to 20x20 concrete slab poured in my backyard for a gazebo. The ground is pretty level. I assume 4 inches is needed.
Thanks! Will buy yours in the spring.
I'm listening to it in the background as I do my work and while it snows, can't wait to go home and watch it with a glass of wine.....Getting excited for spring.....

Great video, Gary! I'll be watching it every year as I learn something new every time I watch you
This is , without doubt the BEST instructional video I have ever watched to learn the best way to successfully grow peppers & tomatoes.. Thank you!!
Its rainy season here in the Philippines, it started after i seeded Cherry Tomatoes last Sept 6, 2021, then a typhoon passed by, submerged my seed cups for a day or two ( couldn’t go out) . Some have survived, but there was minimum sun plus there was scattered rainshowers, its only today that the sun was shining and i took the seedling cups outside for them to strengthen their growth. I will transfer them into bigger pots in 2 weeks time !
i learned from that tomatoes want their top soil a little dry and the get their water source from the bottom water. Thank you so much, i am a newbie in this field, and i am learning from you as my guru !
Thank for this video. I wish this came up 1st when I searched for tomatoes and chillies for beginners. I can't stop watching this lol
Glad to help. I put a lot of videos together to get them into one place

Great video, Gary. First time gardener last spring and I used your videos to give me a solid base of knowledge and had good success. Starting my own tomatoes and peppers this year and will use this as a guide. Going to try lots of different kinds including the midnight snack cherry tomatoes that won the award from AAS. Thank you.
Ill be doing a whole AAS garden this year. Very glad to help. Good luck this year.
Yea its time here we go again! Last year was great over a hundred plants from seeds. You helped me alot ty 🌿🌲🌿🌱
So good now you have to beat that record.
So excited to start seeds! Thank you Gary for all your hard work to provide tips, such a wealth of knowledge. Found your. channel last Spring and grew my best peppers ever!
Outstanding! Glad the peppers worked. Good luck this year.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) after a few failed gardens due to soil being too wet I've raised the beds and it's working. My Tomatoes in large pots did better also because of adding Lime to prevent blossom end rot, you've saved the day!
Hi Gary, I'm glad you said harden off and prune the peppers and tomatoes in this video as most gardeners in the UK don't use top and acclimate tomatoes and peppers. This increases your reach with your great videos.
Thanks so much.

I’ve been growing and propagating house, plants for years, but just garden to growing my own food. I started some onions and garlic chives the other day indoors. The Internet tells me two weeks for chives to germinate and sprout, the packet said up to a month. Well one of the chives sprouted 4 hours after being put in the starting tray and moistened.
Stumbled across your blog researching lighting for seedling and ended up here. Thank you for a lot of information from a first time growing from seeds.
Glad to share and thanks for stumbling by.
