The 2 paper clips made from steel was a clever and cheap way of fitting an iron containing oxygen scavenger into these rations to keep the contents fresh, the can and the lid would be heated to about 120c before being stamped together to dry the air, then it would have been sealed in a vaccum, the little air left in the structure of the food would then have been sucked out when the can cooled to the gap between the can and food and absorbed by the metal paperclips that would lock the air in as oxide of iron.
The lack of matches is because (a) lighters and matches were everywhere in kit and also permanganate fire starters and magnesium rods and also (b) the sulphur in the match head chemistry would have been absorbed into the food and tainted/poisoned it and made it inedible and useless..

that's the thing, he's not actually using a toilet they found out long ago about these videos and he's been removed from the water system altogether. For everybody's public safety. He is using a conveniently located latrine somewheres off-camera. Saying he destroyed, said facilities would be very polite of phrasing. I'm guessing he knew enough not to smoke. The second one of those cigarettes while using facilities or that could've been a whole other kind of CZcams video. Maybe a new kind of suicide bomber training video. feed your volunteer the following ready-to-eat food in its entirety, then supply them with a roll of toilet paper to matches and one of these special military cigarettes make sure they remember not to light said cigarette till they are strategically located within a heavily frequented public washroom facility for best results then light cigarette. Casualty rates will vary depending on metabolism of volunteer and how quickly his body processed the contents of the ready to be eaten meal package. I can only imagine the devastation of the area surrounding the latrine facilities. I wonder how many of your neighbors called the authorities. I wonder how that meeting of REM enthusiasts worked out? On site porta potty's must have been like portable death chambers.

Its currenty 4 in the morning and I have been binge watching your videos.
It was kinda of cool how cigarettes were considered healthy in the past and seen as having their place in the nutritional pyramid.
It may have been to satisfy a universal nicotine addiction among personnel in wwII.
It was simply a morale booster. It had nothing to do with what they considered healthy back then. If a pilot is downed, trying to survive without being captured or killed, having a smoke or two was a respite from the stress of the situation.
I think it was for reducing hunger.

Those cigarettes are not the cigarettes of today. They didn’t have all of the crappy additives and preservatives in them that can kill you off faster.
WW2 instant coffee, still fine after 70 years. MRE instant coffee, dry mold after 5 years. It's like coffee technology has regressed.

I think you brought only 8 gallons of water if I remember correctly. That was still enough though - packing light. Sarge and I brought 16 gallons each. Omg, that chocolate that was made by Nestle’s in Fulton, NY is crazy! I had no idea that place was so old... i live about 10 miles from that Nestle’s plant, unfortunately its being torn down. Its almost completely gone now, its being replaced by an Aldi’s store. But that is really cool to have been watching this and see that they were making chocolate for MRE’s back in the 40’s. My grandma worked there pretty much all her life, she was born in the year 1940. So its pretty crazy to think that she was 4 when that chocolate bar was made, and it has survived to this day. That made my day for some reason lol :)
