The twist comes at the end of the song. Everything you have heard so far, he speaks into a mirror. So he doesn't hurt anyone else, only himself. I think the song is about sadomasochism. People who inflict pain on themselves in order to feel relief afterwards. That's why the show on stage is also fitting. Flake gets into the bathtub in a black suit and comes out as a new person in a glitter suit. Before that, he was frustrated and kicked Till, and after his shower relieved.

      S&M =/= self harm.
S&M is a sexual kink, a little fun, getting a kick out of some pain and stuff.
Self harm is strongly linked to depression and suicidal ideation. Like cutting yourself because you feel numb otherwise, wanting to see yourself bleed because you hate yourself so much. Quite a bit darker and I think that's what the song is about

The song is basiclly ur mind tortureing ur body for releave and pleasure, disregarding ur bodys health for ur mental one. Ur killing ur body but think u gone live on becuase like we all know mind over matter. Rammstein is theaching u not to forget that to expierence pleasure and relive u need a body without it ur mind dies too. (health body healty mind ).The translitions were off he was singing like he is talking to u untile in the end u learn that he is refering to himself (the mind is talking to the body) that u need all the the torture. The body can only talk but the mind decids what s it saying, so the body is screaming in pain but the mind say s it feels good.

The song can be interpreted in many ways, and as far as I'm aware there is no one "right" answer. Many people believe the song to be about the abuse and pain people put themselves through (in various forms, not just physical). The lyrics in the bridge point to the idea that he's talking about himself e.g. seeing the face in the mirror.
Many songs (and music videos) are left open for people to interpret themselves and are specifically written in a way that allows interpretation.

The cool thing about Rammstein songs is that you can interpret the lyrics several ways. For Ich Tu Dir Weh you can read it as sadomasochism, BDSM, abusive relationship, or the relationship between the soul and body. It's true art. It's whatever you take from it.

A lot of people believe that this is about a sadomasochistic relationship and he is the one inflicting the pain, but When he sings
"Ich seh’ im Spiegel dein Gesicht" " I see your face in the mirror"
hints that the person he’s singing about is actually himself. I believe that the song is instead about self-harm and the pain and pleasure associated with it.

Saw them live in South Africa and no other band can ever come close to Rammstein. Yes they have shocking stuff but the world isn't all sunshine and roses. You picked it up correctly. the important line is "Ich seh' im Spiegel dein Gesicht - Du liebst mich, denn ich lieb' dich nicht" translating to "I see your face in the mirror - You love me because i don't love you". Its about hurting yourself.
Also your info on the lead singer being shy and having lots of stage fright is correct as much as the lead singer being a certified pyrotechnician. Their stage setup is super sick and from another planet. I have seen them 8 or 9 times and had my hair burned by them and would TOTALLY go again.
The frontman - Till Lindemann - is btw grandpa and 60 years old.
If you want to watch more Rammstein:
"Feuer Frei!" (Live from Madison Square Garden)- the normal official video is also awesome but the live one is a banger again.
"Sonne" (Live at Rock im Park 2017) - very very rammstein song.
Pretty awesome is also the song Rammstein from Rammstein which will teach you the correct pronounciation with an insane fire backpack but i can't find a good video of that.
Non live versions that are (in my opinion) really good:
"Mein Herz Brennt" piano version featuring Sven Helbig - very different angle of the band and the singer and
"Deutschland" (Official Video) - video to a song. High budget video walking through german history. You'll probably should watch it once and then read some explanations and watch it again. Its .... very very dense.
For all of them: have the text ready. For Deutschland probably look for documentation what the video means.

What I often notice is that because of the language barrier their songs are often misunderstood, for example:
      - Amerika (we're all living in Amerika, Amerika ist wunderbar) would make you think their praising the US way of live.
      - Deutchland (Deutschland, Deutschland über allen) would make you think their deeply jingoistic.
But their songs are so much deeper in meaning and often only if your read the (translated) text you understand how deep their thoughts about these things are. The criticism not praise of a global Americanized society and a song about their love hate relationship with the (mis)behavior of the country you are involuntary were born in.

The controversy of Rammstein is: You can hear what you want! You can hear: there is a guy who isn't sorry about hurting someone else. A guy who tortures an other in the most perverted ways (barbed wires, rodents...etc) OR you can hear: there is a guy who tortures himself. 'Cause the reflection in the mirror is a picture of himself.
Most people go the easy way to stop listening, stop thinking about the lyrics. Goin' "That is sick!" The lyrics from Rammstein can be very disturbing, but mostly there is a deeper meaning and a very subtile twist, that make sense if you really listen. Till Lindemann is a genius with his lyrics, with his poetry. You can read or listen some sick stuff or you are able to think about the meaning. Just one little word can give a whole new meaning.
As an example: Du hast from Rammstein. In german is "Du hast" - one S (translation: you have, you got) exactly same spoken as "Du hasst" - double S (translation: You hate). In that song he plays with these words and the meanings within a (toxic) ralationship/marriage.

  • @unclefoot
    @unclefoot Před rokem +28

I love that you guys are diving into the Rammstein universe! Almost all of their lyrics are open ended and up for multiple interpretations. Till writes them that way on purpose.
Which honestly makes them even more unique as a metal band. Having lyrics that aren’t explicitly about a certain thing or narrative isn’t very common in metal. That’s because the genre provides a soundscape for the exact opposite.
I know y’all are on a live kick with them but once you get into Rammstein’s music videos you’ll find a whole new absolutely bonkers side to their art.
Specifically the piano version of Mein Herz Brennt, Deutschland, Ziet, and Zick Zack.

This song is a prime example of what people meant when their songs had double and triple meanings. Some people lean more to the bdsm route of interpreting the song and others lean towards the self harm route, and both or neither could be right. In other songs they even create their own verb tenses and words that technically don't exist in German to further force you to make your own decisions on how to interpret them.

In case you're wonderring, why the lyrics of the song are so, "different" from the other songs/ lyrics. Well, here is what Flake ( keyboard) had to say: "we were in beautiful France recording the new album. With beautiful weather, great landscape surrounding us. Than we realized, most lyrics are were too cute. So we went back to Berlin, were it was rainy, cold and foggy at the time. And there the dark, bad lyrics just came naturally 😅."
It's about self-mutalation, if you check out the last verse. Not everyone's cup of cake (mine neither), but hey if it makes the person happy, why not.

  • @fionadowdeswell-simmons4968

One small correction to the lyrics translation. The first line of the chorus is I hurt you, I'm not sorry. As with most Rammstein songs, you interpret it how you will. Too me, it speaks of gaining sexual release from self-harm. People have all sorts of fetishes, some darker than others. Till has always suffered from stage fright so takes on on- stage characters to help deal with it. One of the reasons they started using fire was to give Till a barrier between him and the audience and it just grew from there to where we are today. A standard stadium concerts employ around 1000 people in setting up the stage, security etc. etc. The equipment is flown in on four 747's and they use around 70 trucks to ferry the stuff around. Each stage takes 60 plus hours to build so two are set up at a time, one in the next city on the tour so there are no delays. The costumes are all specifically designed for each your cycle, varying from band member to band member. You'll never witness anything as spectacular and overwhelming as a Rammstein concert. They're the real deal, the full package and absolute masters of their craft. Best live band in the world.

  • @TheOriginal_Unaleska
    @TheOriginal_Unaleska Před rokem +2

I like to see the lyrics as a reflection of the horrible things we do to ourselves (hence a reflection of the mirror). We surround ourselves with chemicals, drugs, bad food, emotional drama, mental health, all these things slowly killing us, mentally and physically. Everything in our lives is slowly poisoning us. We know it that it's bad, that it's wrong, but despite that, we continue down the path of self-harm, brainwashing, placating and willfully ignoring these problems, accepting these obvious pains and normalise them.
We all have that second voice in our head, be it good or bad, telling us we need to harm ourselves more to numb the pain what we are choosing to ignore. Or the good voice, trying to tell us how messed up everything is and we need to get out.

Rammstein tackles subjects that are dark. The stuff others won’t say out loud. The lyrics are never literal. Till is also a published poet. A lot of his lyrics are poems he has written and they never really translate into English very well.

I have two of his book of poetry, which I really like. There are some songs they have are great but are dark. people are really enjoying the song, unit they read what the lyrics are and are left feeling should they really be enjoying this. I want to them to check some others out, but not family friendly. Klavier is one I like, Puppe is another one, well written lyrics.

Let me try to explain a little bit about the background of Rammmstein. They were founded in 1994 and the six members are the same ever since. At least two members (Till Lindemann, the singer and Richard Kruspe, the lead guitarrist) had serious trouble with their mothers, leading to (from my point of view) a more dark view on life generally spoken. In addition to that, the band members grew up in the GDR (= Eastern Germany, after World War II the communistic part of Germany, allies of the Soviet Russians), so they had also to experience the economic crash of their homeland as the GDR was integrated into the FRG (= Western capitalist part, allies of the US, UK) in 1990. The music of Rammstein is outstanding and almost 50 songs are very beautiful to listen to. The themes and lyrics are often dark, sometimes creepy, sometimes funny, sometimes weird or even disturbing. But that's Rammstein. They are true artists and they just don't care what others say. And you'll find pure power songs as well as beautiiful ballades. Every single song is special and different and unique. And you will find many things which don't seem to make sense but which you understand with some background information. The band name for example refers to a former US Air Base in Germany, named Ramstein (only one m!). The band firstly chose another name but they had one sing called "Rammstein" and it was about a horrible accident which took place at an airshow, causing many deaths. "Rammstein" was the most popular song in the early time and every one just said: Yeah these are the guys with the song "Rammstein". So they just decided to call themselves "Rammstein" (So there is also a - brillant! - song, called "Rammstein" ... sorry for my bad English.

So glad you're continuing down this fun rabbit hole!
They actually did do 2 English versions of their songs, back in the 90s. Engel (Angel) and Du Hast (You Hate). Both on their Sehnsucht album which did really well here. It's why a lot of people in North America know of Rammstein at least by name. You Hate was played on the radio a fair bit, and they do have at least one chorus in German, so a lot of people know the repeated Du Hast bit as well. You might want to check them out. Neither sound as good as the originals, but at least it's their own rewrites and let's you appreciate the song as a whole better.

I think the song is about self depression, self mutilation and identity disorder. In the last verse Till sings that he sees “your face” in the mirror. But then he sings in every chorus: “Es tut did gut, wenn ihr schreit.” Meaning “you (singular) will feel good, when you (plural) cry. So this song is about 3 persons. But in this moment, the third person could also be him being aware and observing what he’s doing to himself. So the song could also be about 3 of his personas.

About pyrotechnics: A German law says, that if you use pyrotechnis on a stage like Rammstein does, there must always be an official trained pyrotechnic supervisor close on stage. A band from the former German Democratic Republic who see themselves as a total work of art and really are.Their range is impressive and from empahtic to funny ( Dicke Titten, Zick-Zack )you can go on a really long and very entertaining journey through the Rammstein universe. Till lindemann writes his songs that are open to different interpretations. Reason why a lot of fans connect to them. One person thinks it means this, then another person thinks it means this other stuff. And both are in the correct.
So yes, song could be about BDSM, a toxic relationship and/Or Self harm. That’s what makes this band so unique.
A little fact: Till, the singer, has a hard childhood. Reason why most of his songs take the dark tone.

True about Til Lindemann and being shy. Yes why pyrotechnics started. It gave him something to monitor and focus on other the audience. It also gives the audience something to look at besides him, so he does not feel the weight of their stares while they watch the pyro. His shyness also is the source of the crazy acts and antics on stage. The audience isn’t watching and judging him per se,but watching his act, his stage persona. Lastly, watch when he sings looking out at the audience. Notice where his eyes go. Is he looking down at the audience? You will notice that he is usually looking above their heads.

The singer , Till Lindemann was actually quite shy and didn't want to sing in the first place. So he wore these goggles in order to avoid eye-contact with the audience. Before Rammstein he was drummer and was always ''busy''. And as a singer he had several moments in songs, when he doesn't sing, ( intros, outros, solos.....) and just didn't whatto do with his body, stepping back and standing still. So he was getting bored! As he is also a funny and mischievous man he began to throw fire crackers. On the early gigs they also had quite large venues with very few audience. So they spilled gaz on the ground and set it on fire. And there was also the song ''Rammstein '' relating the Ramstein air base 88' disaster. ''A man is burning.... a child dies... a mother's crying.... the sun shines...'' where he sings with a coat on fire. With these they qualified as pyrotechnicians. In 1996 they had an accident. The Rammstein's sign in flammes above the stage fell on the audience and luckily made only light burning. From this they hired a pro pyrotechnicians team and the shows got bigger and bigger!
