Simple DIY Ladder Lift Asphalt Shingles on the Roof

  • All the Ladder Lifts I saw on CZcams were too labor intensive and so I designed my own with stuff I had around the house. It took about 90 minutes to make. I was fortunate to have a 110v winch laying around but noticed that Harbor Freight has one with a discount for $135. You may think that is too much to spend and would settle for rooftop delivery but I saved $480 by doing it myself. It's worth it to me. And you can sell the winch after you're finished for half of what you bought it and you'll still come out way ahead.

    Thanks, David. I loved it and did a large chunk of my roof in May 2024. I am 67 and it worked beautifully. I used my HF 2000# 12v winch with a seperate power supply. I did have one problem where the pulley ring did bend, I repaired it using a 1" solid iron bar I had available and continued the project. I did it alone using 2 extension ladders, one I climbed, the other for the shingle escalator. Wish I looked at this 5 years prior when doing another roof alone!!

    I love it. Only one concern is relying on a ladder rung. A bundle of shingles slid off a roof I was doing once and hit my ladder rung and broke it. I ran a piece of square tube inside it and screwed through the rung itself to repair it. Since then I've never 100% trusted a rung not to fail. If I build this, and I may, I will definitely reinforce the ladder rung I attach anything to for support.

    Pinch point occurs at 26 seconds on this video. Homemade or factory produced, always be aware of pinch and shear points on equipment. If the trolley breaks loose with the young man's hands on the ladder rung, all of his fingers will be severed. Of course, it doesn't happen. However the assumption should always be that the equipment failure will happen at some point. The operator loads and then steps away. Hands are kept clear of any pinch or shear points. If equipment failure occurs everyone walks away and has their hands to work another day.

    It’s worth mentioning it’s not a bad idea to wax the wood for easier gliding along the ladder and please don’t stand at the bottom of the ladder just in case. Also find a way to anchor the ladder to the ground because once the roofing materials pass the roof edge it becomes top heavy

    • @2edge4him
      @2edge4him  Před 2 lety +5

      I didn’t over stack the sled with shingles (better to make an extra trip up and down to keep things safe) and I made the sled go to a place on the ladder where I didn’t have to bend down to lift them off in an awkward position. The ladder should extend 6’ over the edge of the roof making it easier to access the bundles. Don’t hesitate to wear a safety harness when needed. Hope this helps.

    This is what I am looking for. I’m 65 and want to do my roof. Nice work! Question on your winch: do I need the 880 lbs winch which is $135 compared to $100 for 440 lbs in Harbor Freight? It seems to me two packs of shingles is about 160 lbs max plus the sled the total weight is less than 200 lbs. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    • @2edge4him
      @2edge4him  Před 3 lety +1

      Eventhough it is less than 200 lbs as you know there is added resistance because of the drag on the ladder rails. (Maybe you could wax the sled to make it glide better). My winch was not from Harbor as you can see in the video (but something I aquire a long time ago) and it had a 1500 lb capacity 110v, which was more than I needed. I would go with the larger winch (this being an educated guess that it would be sufficient). Let me know how it goes because I would not want to mislead anyone.

    • @2edge4him
      @2edge4him  Před rokem +1

      The weight is probably not a problem but if I remember how the Little Giant Ladder is built the locking mechanisms on the side of the ladder rails may be in the way of the guides on the sled. You have to think of the ladder as a train track with no joints, bolts, connection points, etc that would restrict the smooth gliding of the sled. Two parallel 2x4’s on edge as tracks may work but I don’t know your situation. Hope this helps.

    Maybe add some L or 90 degree brackets on the outside of the 2x4s turning in to hold onto the back side of the ladder rail, as so the load can not rock around, and tip over, and fall. Some day I will make one that I can lift plywood up with. Having it stand strait up, as easier to pull off. Maybe make a metal frame that would raise up, and keep the 4x8 sheets from falling off, and steadied, and easy to take off once up to the roof, but so they can not tip off sideways. Build it like a sled, as it will slide up, and down the Ladder, and will hold the Ply, and allow you to unload it onto the roof, and ballance it, as so it will not fall, sideways, or backwards, while being lifted, or unloading it. But so the wind may not allow it to come crashing down either.

      There would be a lot of challenges with an attic ladder. They’re not as strong or stable as a extension ladder.and wood on wood (if your attic ladder is wood) would create a lot of friction causing drag on the sled. Keep the weight on the sled as light as possible.

      Not sure about the dependability of a cheat Harbor Freight winch and how many times you would need it, but it is one option. Mine was 110 volt which are more expensive so you could transform down to 12 volt with the Harbor Freight. The brand name of the one I think I used was Superwinch 1500. I hope that helps.

      It's a 110 volt winch not common but they can be found.

    Only problem is no leg work out

  • @senatorjosephmccarthy2720

    The young man must be instructed to not stand under the load.
    The load should be lubricated on the sliding surfaces.
    The ladder base should be lashed to 2 big stakes drove in the ground.
    15 years working high in the air.

    Nice prototype. However, it is under built and an accident waiting to happen. Don't stand under it. But, it is simple and smart in concept. Good job.

      sweetiepienumber1 Prototype😂 that simple Emma work for a long long time before you need to replace the plywood for the money that is way more practical especially if you’re doing the roof yourself, I have seen roofers improvise with far more crude methods of doing things and it works for them for years.

    Please reinforce those brackets. 2 more maybe.

    • @2edge4him
      @2edge4him  Před rokem

      Not a problem to add more brackets if you want the added security. According to the manufacturer those brackets are rated at 1,000 lbs each. It was never my intent to overload the lift keeping the load at less than two or three bundles ( approximately 250lbs). Better to make more passes up the ladder taking a few extra minutes to get the shingles on the roof safely. Be safe and thanks for your suggestion.

      Maybe...but I’m not twenty years old anymore. Just an alternative for those that can’t carry 75 pounds up a ladder. It’s good you can still do it.

      @@2edge4him Fair enough! Lol it takes a toll like any labor job for sure. My boss is 52 and he tries to stay away from carrying up the bundles. Makes me and the other young guy do it xD. The man that was loading the shingles in the vid looked capable though
