this gives slightly more weight than the yoshi class, enough to hit a weight stat break point! - Hry

Also inkling boy does not actually have a water speed bonus. The parafoil glider class has 1 less water speed. I was comparing what if I switched Yoshi to inkling boy (lose traction) or switched paper glider to parafoil (lose water speed). Those are the 2 sacrifices I could make to gain 1 weight and hit the break point

My #1 tip for any good player is to keep track of big driving mistakes you make in a race, like falling off or hitting a wall. If you make more than 0 driving mistakes in a race, you'd be lucky to place well.
Remember the big mistakes so you don't make them next time. If driving well is a clear problem for you on a track, time trial it!
This is also good for mentality. If you lose a race because 5 items hit you, but then remember "oh I made 2 mistakes this race", it really gives you room to improve. Maybe you wouldn't have been hit if you maintained your position with good driving.

I currently don't like Waluigi Stadium. I just get Mario Kart-ed and lose every time. But I'm now learning it with the help of Gyrodos videos. He has a "how to play ___ track"-series, which I will now work through.

Piranha Plant Cove is the same thing. I want to try all the shortcuts but haven't learned them yet, so I miss them and lose. But that track is on my list, too.

@@Shortcat321 It's weird because I have to get used to the inputs. This is my first track to really learn the lines of. Until now I have just been winging it.
Especially the lineup for the shroomless but on/after the ramp is tough.
But I have no doubt I'll like it once I can drive it more confidently. I always like it when there is cool tech to learn and master (or at least get decent in it).
My younger brother's favorite combo is Inkling Girl, Teddy Buggy, Rollers, and Paper Glider. He will not play with anything else.
Meta combo with 1 less speed. Super viable!

Hey shortcat! Love your videos and also trying to use some of your strategies on MK8 for the wii U (or for destroying my friends with MK8DX)! It works a bit differently like, the boo doesn't exists, no purple mini-turbos, no double items ect. But the physics and general things work the same and plus with the gamepad screen I can see everyone items, like in DS. (I also discovered you can roll a mushroom in 1st somehow) Anyways keep up the good work, love this videos and you

Hey man, really love your content. MK8D is barely a game I care about casually, but for some reason I find your videos super compelling and fun to watch. I also like hearing about all the tech and the meta - stuff I had ignored for a very long time in this game. I think it would be neat to hear you rank the courses in this game. I know that so many Nintendo youtubers make this type of video, but I feel like you'd have a really interesting perspective here.

word of the wise, dont mistake not making mistakes as not taking risks because a good bit of risk taking can get you far. an example being, youre in third with a green first gets taken out with a blue shell to put you in second, new first place is holding a coin but youre unsure whether they have a protection and/or they know you have a green, if you RISK throwing the green, you have both the chance to get hit by a red putting you in the pack, ruining your race, or there is a chance your snipe hits first and you take first allowing you to front run and possibly secure your place. not making mistakes can reduce the risk of things like this by paying attention to when items have been used and have been picked up and stuff like that but there are always risks to take in this game, as after all, its a gamblers game with a high skill ceiling. (a general tip for anyone that needs to hear this)
14:10 is a perfect example, all risks are as risky as each other, play with confidence and sometimes listening to your gut can pay off.
Absolutely! The 3rd race on SNES Bowser castle 3 is a great example. I used a mushroom early which means I can't recover from being hit. Then I trailed the Yoshi, which means I can't dodge a red shell.
These are both safer plays than holding onto my item, as being near other racers is actually more dangerous. I could have gotten punished for either decision (such as the 2nd blue shell showing up). But ultimately those were good decisions because I lowered my risk of getting hit both times.
Its important to look back at bad races and evaluate your decision making! Not just items, but also when to bag, go for coins, avoid other racers, etc.

I’m the person with the Glaceon pfp when you were showing the messages (as one could probably imagine). I’m glad you uploaded this video showing just how important having that slight bit of weight can help so much.
Also, I don’t think it was explained super well in the video what in particular the whole-numbered weight stats give. They give more weight when you’re in a miniturbo, mushroom, or other boost such as a piranha plant or a boost panel. Of course this synergizes well with Mr. Scooty because if you’re using it you’re gonna be constantly squeezing out miniturbos at any given opportunity.
Since these videos are kinda long, a thing i like doing is watching 5 to 15 minutes of It one day and then getting back whenever feel like i want to see some Mario Kart so a single video that you release ends up feeding me for the whole week until the next one

For many years I've practiced separating what I can and can't control. I wasn't mad at getting Mario karted on boo lake or kalimari desert, because those were my own fault. Mario kart usually delays the reward/punishment for an action, so it can be very easy to think things are random or unfair.
Regardless, you will go through bad luck streaks. Ask yourself, very honestly, what could you have done better? Usually there is something you could have done better, and you can work on that.
If the answer is truly nothing, then you can laugh at the bad luck! This is like getting an unlucky dice roll. There's nothing to be angry about.

For a week I've been inspired to be more often good sports than not, and to stop being mad at meaningless things, because why making life complicated ? It has also helped me improving on the game i was playing, because when i'm mad i'm playing less and less well.

I think the reason Yoshi is so common as a meta pick just boils down to them being the most well known choice for meta. It’s like in Mario Kart Wii; Everyone knows Funky Kong is meta in Wii, but not everyone knows Funky Kong and Daisy is meta
I haven’t even played mkwii and I know that funky Kong and daisy is the meta
yoshi is better because everyone uses it, so it gives a little bit of anonymity on the minimap. also the fact that yoshi has many colors means you can use it but still have a certain level of personization compared to if another character was meta
Yoshi's color options are also used in competitive lounge when playing in team formats. Birdo has color options too, but you don't see her nearly as much. Then there's Peach/Daisy and Peachette, who don't have color options and are easier to spot on the map.
Inkling Boy is the only character in Tanooki Mario's stat group with color options... granted it's only 3, and you'd still be easy to spot on the map compared to Yoshi.
...Yoshi is also just a BIG fan favorite of the Mario cast. ESPECIALLY in Japan.
I mean other than that people just love Yoshi and always have done. He was like an Oddjob popularity pick in Mario Kart 64.

This is the combo that i have been using since I started playing again MK8 deluxe (like 7 months ago i think), im glad someone else uses it now and say that it is good 😭😭 Its kind of a "free thinker" option with very good stats! :D
