Fun Fact about Ping Pals: WayForward were hired to work on that instead of making a DS Shantae sequel. for Nintendo. They had assets and everything, but Nintendo offered them this shit instead.

WARNING: LONG POST AHEAD
It was 2005. Before the recession. I was a carefree child who loved video games. We lived in a modest house, we had some cool video games, and some people were excited about Halo 2 and the Xbox 360. Life was good. My 2005 summer was spent playing old Dreamcast games right until the time I was introduced to the Nintendo DS. I was amazed. You have to realize that back then, people couldn't imagine a handheld handling 3D graphics in an even remotely playable way. However, this was different. I saw gameplay footage of Super Mario 64 DS, and my mind was blown. A handheld is processing a fully 3D game? "It's like a Nintendo 64 in your pocket!" I said, "and it has two screens! You can touch the bottom one!" It was great. I was so excited, but my parents couldn't afford it at the time. I was crushed, but such was life. I had to be patient.
Winter 2005. My grandmother, who could actually afford an entirely new gaming system, asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I thought "Here's my chance. A Nintendo DS! Finally in my hands!" So I confidently told her, "Nana, I want a Nintendo DS. It's a handheld gaming system. It's real cool, and I want some games for it!" And you know what she said?
"OK."
It was done. I was about to get my very own Nintendo DS. A whole new world of gaming. I was about to be welcomed to the future. Christmas 2005. Hot chocolate, Christmas specials, winter break, and a snowy day outside. There were presents under the festively lit tree. Three of them for me, stating that they were "From Nana". One was a decently sized box, and the other two were smaller jewel-case sized boxes. I opened the big one first. Inside? An electric-blue Nintendo DS. How excited was I? Well, remember that video you watched of that kid screaming that he got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas? Yeah, it was like that. But, a system was useless without games, so I opened the two smaller presents. Then, suddenly, I realized that I made a tremendous mistake.
I said to my grandmother that I wanted "some games" for it. I wasn't specific enough. I was relying on my grandma's taste of games (read, none) to pick out those that she thought I would enjoy. Now, it's coming back to bite me.
The first game? Madagascar for the Nintendo DS. My first game for my brand new handheld was a damn movie tie-in shovelware game. The Madagascar movie was popular at the time, so I can understand if she picked that one up. And besides, the game was OK. Nothing worth talking about. The other one?
I shit you not, a decision that still continues to baffle me to this day, even considering the circumstances. ATV Quad Frenzy. I thought "She had to have looked at the box and thought 'No, that's too shitty'. She had to. Her taste can't be that bad." Nope, there was the game, in it's full garbage splendor. That footage you're seeing at that timestamp? You're looking at a broken child's dreams. The awful controls. The broken trick system. The horrendous user interface. This game made me a man. It made me realize what disappointment felt like.
The silence and disappointment was palpable. My mom even went "Oh, that game. OK. At least you have a DS!" No one in the house liked it. My father hated it and said that it was trash. My mom wanted nothing to do with the game. My younger sister grimaced at it. It was the redheaded stepchild of the house, except without the charm. And can you blame them? It was one of the lowest rated games ever. I would never forget it. My first ever Nintendo DS, my very own cutting edge handheld, and I christened it with this complete waste of silicon.
The worst part? It was all I had. That and Madagascar for the first few months. Eventually I got some great games for it (Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing Wild World, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy IV), but the first few months were rough. And I have that piece of near-unplayable shovelware to thank for it.
Moral of the story: ALWAYS explain your requests. Or you're gonna get shit in your hands. Literally.

Lol i got really fuckin lucky for getting an r4 with a 2gb sd card that comes with nds files. I remember joining my cousins playing Mario Kart DS and someone used a cheat. Then everybody shouted shit! Good ol days :3
Wayforward, the company behind Mighty Switch Force, and my favourite game franchise, Shantae, also made a bunch of shovelware shrek games for the DS.

Fun Fact: Those sounds in Pokemon Dash were soon used in Pokemon Rumble Blast and Rumble World for the 3DS.
A fun fact is in CTR, penta penguin has two marker samples left in the final version of the game as saying "penguin yay 1" and "penguin yay 2" this character also has the incorrect mask item sprite.

I heard Vinny say "Chicken Shoot" and saw that title screen and for a solid minute I refused to believe the game was real. The entire thing was so shitty I thought he was pulling people's legs and putting up a video of some Scrimmy Bingus-style thing. Even the title sounds like a fake name Vinny would just make up on the spot.
I actually own the game... well sort of It's kind of buried away now.

I remember when they pimped the hell out of Munchlax before Gen 4. One even cameoed in the original Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (which is not a shitty game at all). Such a bizarre choice to show off so much.
I remember that, as a kid, i dint pay to much attention to it, until i replayed the game when i was older, and saw that munchalx was in it and was all "dafuck!? he aint in this gen!"

Pokemon DASH came out in the US. That or my mom somehow imported a copy which I doubt.
The one kind of cool thing is that if you plugged in either of the gen 1 remakes (and probably any GBA main pokemon game) it would generate courses based on the sprites of your current party. This is neat until you realize that it's a horrible mishmash of slow tiles and impassable hazards sometimes. Also maybe it was just a lot of premade levels for each pokemon and not generating them.

The fact that I actuallyremember Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi makes me extremely infuriated at myself as a person.
I remember that I was trying to find out their names for 5 long years because I used to watch their show on Cartoon Network (and thought their VA's were the hottest shit).
Real talk, when I was nine or ten years old, my mother saved a pair of baby squirrels who were abandoned by their mother in the tree just outside the house. We managed to raise them up to better health after a few weeks, and me being the shit kid I was named them Ami and Yumi because I saw the show just prior to them being found.
I could not for the life of me remember what the fuck I named them from until today.

The Charlotte's Web game is actually a port of an identical Gameboy Advance game. I own the GBA version, and I've always hated it. Also, I own a SuperMan GBA game which, if I'm remembering correctly, is basically Bejeweled with SuperMan crystals. I guess SuperMan is doomed to never have a good game.

The 2000's were pretty much the dark ages for Nintendo (in terms of games). All of their consoles released in that time were essentially used as a dumping ground for shitty shovelware games.
Economical crash and Newgrounds bootlegers didn't help either.

I'd say it's more likely that they reused the tech from Pokemon Channel from Gamecube, which had similar theming to Hey You Pikachu.

Even as an 8 year old I wasn’t a fan of Pokémon Dash, the constant rubbing on the screen got old pretty quick. But being able to import sprites of your Pokémon from the Gameboy Games was kinda neat.

The ping pals sprites were made by nexon... nexon is the same company the made maplestory. ._. The resemblance between the sprites are uncanny. O_O

That Puffy game is pretty trash-looking but it at least looks like something I could play for more than five minutes. There was a Puffy "game" for the PS1 in 1999 or so that was really just a collection of super-compressed music videos, but they threw in a couple quick light gun minigames with no replay value to make it look like effort happened.

Oh my god! Ping Pals was my childhood! My sister and I used to play it for hours and neither of us know why we liked it so much because it's basically a chat room. I recently sold that game with a bunch of other old games. Kinda miss it now even though I hadn't played it in years, but it was for a good cause. My sister needed enough money/store credit to buy a PS3.
ATV: Quad Frenzy is actually a Gameboy game, i still have it. I remember I got it from my grandmother when i was 7 :D

@@alexcimitile the friend that gave me the game moved away a few months after i posted that comment, my life has been pretty terrible afterwards, but hey, atleast i have ping pals still!
So, I remember having the PS2 version of the King Kong game and honestly it really was not that bad when i remember playing it, but i do remember this annoying bit about running out of ammo and having to resort to throwing pointed sticks at things alot.

For the record Pokemon dash did get released in the Us, I have a copy of the Us version for shit's sake (also I am in Pa so you can't say that I'm not in Us)
