- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I always ran outside when an afternoon thunderstorm was about to roll in, and I'd pick every single thing that was ripe or near to ripe. That way, they didn't have a chance to crack, and didn't taste all watery like they would have if I'd gotten to them after the rain. Glad I'm not the only one who sees the value in that timing!
Rofl, I try to do this, and I normally wind up chasing Littlebit to get her back inside instead. Yesterday the young one and I got drenched trying to get her out from under a car, and the fireworks started going off and she freaked. Wound up deciding to curl up under Mama Peach and that's when we were able to get her picked up.
@@GoingGreenMom Hey there GGM! Poor Littlebit!
@@GoingGreenMomwho's lil bit? Many blessings everyone.
@@MissBetsyLu Littlebit is one of my cats. Lol.
@@GoingGreenMom ahhhh. So now I know! Thanks so much. Many blessings everyone.
Love your videos. If I may humbly suggest, as a lifelong horsewomen, the sitting in the barn with them is more fostering trust and relationship. A great resource, which I continue to learn from, is Warwick Schiller Attuned Horsemanship. The beautiful thing about horses is there is always something to learn, no matter how long we've been at it. Thank you for sharing your life with us 💖
Warwick is amazing!
I was going to suggest checking out Warwick, too! Great stuff there. After 30 years of riding and training, I really wish I had him as a resource sooner.
a
😅😅😅😊😊😊à😊a😅😅😅à❤
I too am a lifelong horsewoman, over 60 years and I couldn’t agree more!
Thank you for another great video!
I made butter this morning for the first time ever. You’re a great inspiration Jessica. I’m 61 1/2 yrs old today. I’m still learning but…. I’ve been gardening longer than you’ve been alive and I’m learning from you. You’re never too old to learn. Never.
Always amazes me how quickly you record, edit and publish your content! How the heck do y’all do it all! :)
We are so thankful that you are sharing your journey with us!
Blessings and Grace to you!
Kimberly
She probably doesn't do the editing anymore. Banking up scheduled video's works great as well.
My garden is so late due to my mom's passing, but the squash are doing great and so are the peppers. The tomatoes are getting there along with everything else.
My mother died this past Christmas...the day after.
I am praying for your grief to dull and become loving remembrances that bring smiles and a heart full of love.
And usually God helps gardens catch up. God bless you
Blessings and prayers and peace and love to both of you. Many blessings everyone.
So sorry that you lost your Mom
Thank you for letting northern gardeners experience this a little early. My tomatoes are a bit behind anyways but I just noticed my first tomato starting to form. Now the long wait for them to grow and ripen.
Ate my first Sungold tomato this afternoon, standing in the garden in the heat of the day, and thought of you! 💗
Jess and Miah you started the Saturday morning on your porch I am starting my Sunday morning sitting up in bed and watching you drinking coffee and picking tomatoes. Waiting for my breakfast in bed😊 What a lovely way for you to start the day. As it is winter here I am not sitting out on my porch. Still 14C° but the Sun is shining. Will warm up later. The bull at the back fence standing to warm up a wallaby hopping around and the Whip bird hopping on the edge of my newly extended garden bed. Love it.❤ Have a fantastic weekend.
Nice tomato harvest ! You are great with diagnosing sick tomato plants and plucking them out then and there to spare the others. You two are a well-rounded and fun Homesteading duo. You started out my first Homesteader video love and inspiration sooo many years ago....and you still are my favorite !
Woohoo! 🎉 i was instantly happy for you when I saw the first tomato harvest! ☺️ we’re still a ways from that in Maine, so appreciate the vicarious pleasure.
2:07 .. I love the patchwork blanket that Ezra had. It’s adorable. 💓 🍅
Love using our clothes line also!! It’s the simple things that bring the most joy 🥹
I love tucking into fresh bed sheets after they’ve been hung on the line.
So fresh and comforting.
I think i love your Saturdays, the horses and the ice cream.
Thank you for sharing your sweet man and sweet boys with us on your day off. Thank you too for sharing that gorgeous blanket.
Miah whistles and the horses come. I love watching training 😊 of horses and cows.
Love your linen wardrobe, Jess. The dresses look so pretty hanging on your clothesline. I've never been a fan of synthetic fabrics of any kind and have avoided them at all costs. Sadly, I have found 100% cotton has become more and more difficult to find and if available is insanely expensive. Have had some luck at thrift stores. I've noticed that often times linen is easier to source than 100% cotton. Your tomatoes are looking so tasty. Have a restful holiday. You deserve it!!!!
I love the quilt! Awesome!
Love Your Boys Too!
Oh, horses, horses, horses! Smart plan Miah. And tomatoes! What a lovely video.
The tomatoes are looking great! We lost a lot from all of the rain through Central Georgia but we do still have a few good looking ones out there.
We'll think fondly of them til they come back around next year..... We just finished strawberry, cherry, and mulberries here.... My kids are starting to notice when asparagus season is by the size of the stalks even though they are still storebought and we just started our own patch this year. And my son keeps saying he can't wait for a tomato sandwich..... Yet he knows it is pointless to try to buy tomatoes at the store. I never realized how you could transition to seasonal eating, but it truly is just a matter of growing things so you know what good tastes like.
GOD is amazing. I don’t watch your videos on a regular basis. This morning I was awake long before my alarm and played YouTub to hopefully calm my constantly irritated nerves when you passively mentioned the book “The Body Keeps the Score” that was on your table. I immediately bought it from Amazon. I am a combat Veteran from on of the worst battles in Iraq and my PTSD and anxiety are completely out of control, even though I been in therapy for years and see a therapist regularly. I hope and pray this book bring me some peace and brings my body some rest. Thank you 🙏
Loved your poem about Maya. Those towels are so pretty.
that horse was whispering secrets to its buddy....LOL ...miah ur lessons undermined lol
She is such a beautiful horse.
I so look forward to your vlogs, they never disappoint and I always learn something. Blessing to your family!
I'm reading the exact same book right now. Great book
I love that book too. Very comforting and informative.
I can't stand waiting for your videos.
You are a store of knowledge.
A great teacher of self sufficientincy
been making grape tomatoes salads yummy lots of minced garlic, olive oil,Redman salt n basil ....nothing else n serve room temp ....
oh my. those eggplants were GORGEOUS
It still blows my mind that Wes is one of YALLs good friends and I got to worship with him while he lived In Dothan 😊
I can just about remember the days I ironed my linen and cotton shirts. 🥴😁
I fully expected you to turn and face the camera and say "Oh! Hello there! Welcome to my farm!" about 10 seconds in 😂
I watched one of your videos about growing tomatoes. I put eggs under my tomatoes-cracked. Best crop production ever! Thanks!
It will never not make me sad that kids are not being taught cursive anymore. How will they read older documents???
That quilt is something special :-) ♥
Bear is just a love doodle.
I love it when you show your tomatoes!
I really like your hat too!
I just saw your videos for the first time. Love them. I see you say you bought your plants. As a homesteader myself I save and grow my own plants. I have well over 11,00 varieties of tomato seeds alone.
That blanket is so cool. I have the frost tender flower shirt in blue and grow stuff shirt in pick. They are my favorite shirts to wear.
My mom who would be 88 used to say "If god wanted us to iron he wouldn't have invented permanent press." It was probably soon after permanent press was invented. I agree with the natural fibers. I love Crocs and Polar fleece jackets, everything else is as much cotton as I can find.
Thanks for bringing us along on Saturday! Your family works & plays together so well! Blessings to all 🤗💗🇨🇦
My favorite shirt is know your roots…I have from ya 🌱
I am glad you showed this to us.🍅
lol like the squeak of the rocker ....way tooooo hot to do much of ANYTHING ...here in zone 8a Nashville GA yup read it correctly ,,gotta Nashville in ga....not toooo far from you ....have a blessed n safe weekend ...
Lol “if you like that kind of thing” [side-eyes tomatoes]
You said we would never see the laundry room lol!
The fruit boxes/ crates from Sam’s club are also great for harvesting tomatoes etc in.
Nice that you show that all homegrown tomatoes are beauties. A new gardeners may feel discouraged when they see the bumps and warts the tomatoes that they worked so hard on. What's good to know is that those same tomatoes will taste so good, not like disappointment. My hungarian oxhearts were big and so good last year, the hit of the season
I love “The Body Keeps the Score” but it’s is like drinking from a firehose. I have to only read a little at a time. Excited for coffee!
Enjoy! Can’t wait for my tomatoes! 🍅
You saved my beauties! I did not check the forecast today. Thanks a million!
Those are some beautiful tomatoes👌
OMG I'm reading currently reading that book. I came across it because I'm starting my doctorate in integrative health this month but I was pleasantly surprised to find it on the best-seller list. So funny
Beautiful tomatoes 🍅 😋. Spent part of my morning out in the garden, tying up tomatoes and zucchini. Ran some errands with Hubby, and a thunderstorm came through. The lower branch with my closest to ripe tomatoes broke off 😢. They'll be on my counter till ripe.
I support 'Horse Plus Humane Society' in Tennessee (donations and CZcams subscription, etc). I've watched and appreciated the horse training videos by Kory at that facility. He has worked with feral mustangs.
Feel good video. Priceless ☺️
I’ve been reading The Body Keeps The Score too! It was very helpful and very interesting!
Your sons look so different now, growing growing thank G^d with all His blessings at every moment. South Carolina nice place to grow kids!
i am just starting that book and i agree. I will be sitting in the garden this evening reading a few chapters :)
Never commented before but had to say that I LOVE that you have studied the Body Keeps Score. Stellar book for healing!!!❤
It's so good!
Lovely Saturday morning ritual of relaxation. Awesome clothes-line Miah ! Sweet poetic blanket revival with Ezzera . Toby is cool with his pink-shirt idea.... it is a vibrant background for prints for sure. Yay for horsemanship , teaching and learning about each individual animal. Nice video. Bear is awesome as usual.
I live in New Zealand. I love your channel. Was impressed to see you hang out your washing. Can I share a tip with you. It save a bit with ironing. Hang out cottons linens and jeans inside out. It saves on fading and makes ironing a little bit easier as the sun doesn't bake in the wrinkles. . Your amazing and so interesting with so much to share. So I thought I would share with you. Cheers
So happy you have your tomatoes 🍅
Sweet Jess, I am excited for you on harvesting tomatoes. I have 6 tomatoes (babies) right now, and tons of blossoms. Soon tomatoes will be harvested. I can't wait for that first tomato sandwich.
Vanilla ice cream oh my!!!😊
💚 Happy 4th of July 🇺🇲, y'all. I'm sitting in the garden I tend, eating strawberries, nectarines, cherries and melon, watching the bees on the lavender. The garden is very late this year, nowhere near tomatoes yet, although a few are trying to flower. Still planting things. I finally was able to try your carrot seed sewing with the boards over the seeds and I just made some Basil tea! Wearing one of your blue, "I Love Growing Stuff" tanktops! 💚
Your horse stalls are really nice! Horses are so much work, but so rewarding.
I do like that kind of thing "tomatoes are the best". I grew up on the dairy farm and we had ice cream often. Even more when there was a milk strike. Fond memories of hand cranked and later electric ice-cream maker. You children have the best life on the farm😊
Mya may want to watch Monty Robert's join-up follow up video.. It's very helpful especially with with young and untrained horses and it works beautifully and quickly. I've done his course 24 years ago and used it with every horse i owned or trained.
The Body Keeps the Score is absolutely life changing. Glad you mentioned it!
I love pineapple tomatoes too. We are on a new property. We broke old hay ground for our garden . The garden is far from what I know it will be as we amend and improve the soil. We are getting some produce but not lots.
Jess, you are such an inspiration to me to keep moving forward. A huge blessing from the Lord. This is my 3rd year gardening. I have big dreams of owning land and growing all of my food one day but for now I live in town and have a small in ground garden.
This year I grew my great grandmothers garlic (my nana kept it growing year after year and now I have the blessing of growing it too.) and made homemade garlic powder for the first time 😊
It is ever so rewarding to know that I can cook with food that my great grandmother started years and years ago!
Love the clothesline
The clothes line is so beautiful. Can not wait to have mine! ☺️ 5:53 this is so happy to see you get a good tomato harvest after the last two years ☺️ 16:58
Oh my goodness, the clothes line looked so awesome with your clothes hung on it.
Blessings ❤
I'm reading that book for a second time right now. It's hard to take in but so necessary and such a blessing. Thank you for this video! It was beautiful to see the love of your family and the slower time spent on more simple things. This makes life beautiful! Happy weekend to you and the fam! xoxo
I will never get over how comfortable that morning coffee on the porch looks. I can picture both of you old and gray watching the great grand children run threw the yard from those rockers. Can't wait to see them on the new porch
The first "Dr Wyche" (which is not a Dr Wyche) looks like Paul Robeson... that rusty hue with the green shoulders.
Also, perhaps try a 40% black shade net next year, for the hot days. It really helps to reduce heat stress and helps the red tomatoes form better colour (they don't go red in the heat).
Great video Jess,❤❤❤
Toby's hair is getting so much lighter! The boys are adorable as always :D
I just purchased that same book along with Somatic Psychotherapy. Those books are very informative.
Love the hat Jess!!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING
I enjoyed. Thank you.
Saturdays were made for resting ! Seventh day :) thanks for letting us east and enjoy it with you :)
If there is so many of us agreeing on the Saturday is the last day, why are we going to church on a Sunday. 😊
You're the best!
Bless you Jess and Miah !
Thank you! I’m excited to see pepper and eggplant flowers on my plants right now, but carrot harvesting has begun. I planted carrot seeds at the end of March saying 65 days, but they’re JUST NOW getting to good sizes worth pulling. The third round of sunflowers need to be plated out tonight before rain tomorrow. How are your sunflowers?
I have never liked tomatoes but this year I’m attempting to grow a bunch of different varieties to find one I like! Worse case scenario, I just make a lot of salsa/sauce lol 😂
Bless you😊
Enjoyed the video
Awesome harvest
Clothes line envy here...LOL! Blessings on your day !🥰🌻🐛💕
Love your linen clothes collection! #wardrobegoals
Yes, Jess you need a shirt that says Sweet Miah is my Home Boy, lol
Lovely tomatoes, I love them! Blessings ❤🤗🤝
Great video Jess Happy 4th weekend to you n your family
Lol I love that shirt idea! Aww such sweet boys
Great video🌸
So I was listening to some of your videos while working in the greenhouse (as I always do for inspiration), and you mentioned ants and how you kill them off. My hands were dirty so I could not respond at the time, and I am not sure which video it was now...
I was raised in the south and my go to organic ant killer is Grits, yes, Grits. Sprinkle some where you see ants. they take them down into the nest, and within a day or two they will be dead, guaranteed! If the grits get wet, they will not work, just sprinkle more. Also keep the grits away from the birds (cover with mulch or a little soil), as I have heard they too will eat them and die. If you have a big ant bed, just take a shovel, remove the top, dump in some grits, put the top back on the mound, and run!!!
