  • We had a few ECU's kicking around so we decided to do a dyno comparison on this MK6 GTI 2.0T. We put Malone Tuning, up against Unitronic. This is a stage 2 setup, with stock turbo. All runs were performed on the same day, with same fuel. No modifications done between runs aside from swapping ECU's.

I have the IE stage one tune on my 2012 mk 6 GTI... No other mods completely stock. Horsepower and torque gains feel very impressive!!! I have no idea what the actual gains are and don't even care. The transformation of the car was definitely worth it. It was easy to do and to this day I have only had one check engine light.... faulty coil..... Replaced them all.
I am an old guy (71) and just thought another 30 or so horsepower would be fun! It is!!!

I own a 2011 mk6 GTI with the same CCTA engine myself, and you two were 100% correct on the impact even a stage 1 tune has on the car. My stage 1 tune was with APR, ran that for about 8 months with my only mods being a drop in filter and a resonator delete. My only real issue with that tune was the surge in the mid 2k rpm range. Nothing, nothing, nothing, oh hello turbo! It made the car feel finicky in certain situations. Recently I did a downpipe, intercooler and intake and got set up with a Stratified tune, and took a few days to test the COBB stage 2 tune as well. COBB left a lot to be desired in power delivery, I felt that in order to get the car to accelerate even at a moderate pace I was needing to press the throttle down further than I would have expected. The Stratified tune though is by far my favorite. It has the most linear power delivery of the 3 tunes in my opinion, manages power well, and goes like hell. MN hasn't given me many (or any) great opportunities yet to really try and put the power down, but the daily drivability and smoothness of the tune makes it a clear winner in my eyes.
I was thrilled to see a mk6 GTI on here, hoping to see more! I wonder how APR stage 2 stacks up against Uni and Malone?

    Stock 0-60 = 8.3 second (slightly uphill)

I live in Edmonton and have owned a APR and currently own a Unitronic tune, I have noticed both had a rather long "learning" phase on a fresh tune.
Granted time is money, nor claiming the Unitronic tune is better, but I believe it would have continued to yield more power had more runs been completed, and is being "sold" short after 2 runs.

Have you guys ever thought about doing a fuel performance comparison for the available gas stations out east? Vancity Audi have done a 3 part series testing the different available fuels and get the best performance from chevron 94 with a bigger increase in hp and less timing correction throughout the power band. Definitely noted. At this point for us to put something out like that with actual useful data it would take quite a bit of time, not to mention money. I wouldn't want the data to be skewed so we'd want to do it all on the same day, which means lots of fuel, and tons of time draining and refilling between each run, multiple runs etc. Maybe if the YT budget gets there it's something we can look at doing.
