Bo Bichette actually DID improve defensively this year! Not a stud with the glove but for first time in his career he had a +DRS and +OAA
Actually Bo was pretty awful if you look at OAA. The problem is OAA is a terrible way to determine the productivity of an infielder. Mark is probably making his judgement from hi savant page which is incorrect. OAA is more used for outfielder defense. A simple google search about how OAA is used, you could find that out. Not sure why Mark doesn't use UZR or DRS which shows that Bo was actually an above average short stop defensively. Haven't watched the whole thing yet but I bet Mark talks up Bobby Witt Jr's defense even though Witt was awful defensively if you look at DRS or league average if you look at UZR.
@@candian75he absolutely talked up Bobby Witt’s defense. OAA is kind of had in general, but as you mentioned, ESPECIALLY infielders.
@@andrewarnold9751 I figured he would because OAA absolutely loves Bobby Witt Jr but every other defensive metric doesn't.
@@candian75bo is definitely not above average at short
@@kennethhanes5702 I mean he was this year according UZR and DRS. 4.1 UZR. 0 is league average and was +5 in DRS. Argue with the stats lol.
If Seager hadn’t gotten injured he might’ve had one of the greatest non steroid era offensive season
Could you imagine what Corey Seager’s stats would look like if he played a full 162!? 45 plus bombs and 130 plus RBIs
I think that's kind of been the knock on Seager though right? Injured a lot.
@@SystemsAllianceyeah it has
It’s ShortStop Time!! Here you go if you wanna know
Biggest Rise: JP Crawford 19 to 9 (10 spots)
Biggest Drop: Amed Rosario 17 to 30 (13 spots)
Biggest drop was Wander *****
@@chernandez212331he wasn’t on the list, so he wasn’t a drop. If he was on the list, he wouldn’t have dropped
@@kennethhanes5702 I know bro, lighten up
You are the 🐐
nice spoilers a hole
I really thought Marc was going to take this opportunity to shit on Volpe, 100%
Instead, he criticized him fairly and praised him fairly. I actually think his assessment of Volpe was really accurate. I’m impressed
Corey Seager absolutely deserved the #1 spot on this list, my new favorite player in Major League Baseball and one of the greatest things to ever happen to my Texas Rangers! I could watch his home run in game 1 of the World Series over and over for hours!
Same here 😮💨 love me Corey Seeger as a rangers fan 😂
Bichette had a really solid defensive year I don’t think that’s “pretty horendous”
bro just blabbers on and on don't take what he says seriously
Especially with Toronto. He has admitted to not liking the Jays
@@ChardeeMacDennis96 yea and he never mentions defensive stats just says “they have a good glove” or “they are horrendous” bo certainly isn’t the best shortstop but he’s serviceable there def not “horrendous” lmao
He was 20th percentile OAA, 31st percentile arm strength, that’s not very solid
@@birdinflight3861 Well you aren't supposed to look at OAA to judge the quality of an infielder. That stat was mainly created to judge the defense of an outfielder. If you do a simple google search you could see for yourself. A better metric for infielders are UZR or just looking at DRS. Bo's UZR was 4.1. 0 is league average so Bo was 4x better than the average shortstop on defense. Mark also talks about how good Witt Jr was on defense even though according to UZR which was 0.2 he was about average and DRS hates him.
Correa played with Plantar Facitis all year, and was hitting into double plays 24/7, but when it finally snapped and he took a week on the IL, he came back in the playoffs and was much faster and outrunning double play balls again
I expect his 2024 to be a ton better
I just came here to say the same thing.
Playoffs isnt a good enough sample
@@Ethanz08s It is when its Carlos Correa. They guy obviously has been playing hurt the past couples seasons (passing medicals has been a complication) and a healthy Correa is an all-star for sure.
@@Ethanz08s you missed the entire point
“And that’s why Francisco lindor is the greatest SS of all time”
Cap
You're lucky that you beat me to it.
😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐
The Mets obviously have the best players at every position its not even close seager is so overrated
The only thing more unbearable than Giraffedildo’s bias in his videos is this recycled comment.
Bichettes defense went from mlb dead last amongst ss (2022) to middle of the road this year (2023)... thats a HUGE defensive improvement... im no longer nervous every time the ball goes to him
Xander took a Spencer Strider fastball to the wrist early in the year which lead to his slower start. He was red hot to the start the year then got hit and his numbers dropped.
If only the Padres had another SS who could have started in his place while he recovered on the IL.
Putting Lindor over Seager in the thumbnail is such Giraffe Neck Marc click bait
arcia made the all star team mainly because he was batting 300 with his 10 or so home runs
I don’t know if it’s true but if I remember correctly as an Angels fan that Neto was playing with an injury because the Angels were desperate for infielders so his numbers started going down but I expect him to be at least a top 12 shortstop next year with a 20 20 season.
You punished Tovar way too much for playing at Coors. Some of the guys you put above him are inexcusable.
Marc trying not to mention Coors when talking about a Rockies player challenge (impossible)
Honestly, as a Padres fan, I was surprised to see Xander ranked that high... I would have slotted him just outside the top ten... but hey, so be it... *shrug*... thanks for the effort in cutting together this series of videos...
Seager is #1. Most clutch human alive
Arcia deserves more Love especially for the production he gives you and price of his contract!!
Jackson Holliday will likely play 2nd base. Gunnar was much better defensively as a SS compared to third.
source?
@@iangold2987 The Orioles manager and GM both said it's a real possibility. Plus, common sense would suggest the better defensive SS should play SS. lol
@@brandondillman5841 i mean, to most it wouldn’t be common sense since he’s literally the most anticipated prospect to be called up
@@iangold2987 and Gunnar Henderson was the #1 prospect in baseball last year. Having 2 great defensive infielders up the middle is a big advantage. They've also had Holliday play 215 innings at 2nd base in the minors. So, they've been preparing for this possibility.
Gunnar is gay. He is awesome!
No qualms with the actual placement of Bo but put some respect on his defense. He’s improved a lot getting to being a league average defender. Anyone who isn’t happy with that sort of profile should have a problem with Xander Bogaerts cause he did the same thing for years before he fixed his glove at like 30
Bichette at 8 feels too low imo
He gets dogged for defense, but it was better than 2022 and slightly below average. An injury did cut into his counting stats, but if he stays healthy, he’ll be top 5.
Yeah there’s no way some of the guys above him on his list are above them I’d put him above or around Gunnar Henderson
Bo has to be higher on this list man.
This dude right here is another beast with Bobby Witt Jr and Gunner Henderson the short stop position is looking pretty good for the next 10 15 years
Bichettes defense has improved year over year, “horrendous” is quite a terrible take 😂 and ranking him at 8 is crazy
Not really, going from consistently being one of the worst defenders in the league to all of a sudden having 1 “mediocre” defensive season still makes you pretty horrendous overall.
The fact Arcia is at 17 is crazy, he was an all star and he's only the 18th best, he's not #1 but Arcia is better than 17
The Arcia disrespect is CRAZY
Love seeing my guy JP get some respect. He’s back at Driveline this offseason. Can’t wait to see him in 2024
should be 5 or 6 on this list, possibly higher.
I think the narrative on Bo Bichette’s defense is uninformed. He cut down the errors significantly this season (23 in ‘22 to 8 in ‘23) and is much better than getting the “horrendous” tag.
Errors are a terrible metric. Castellanos had no errors this year does that mean he's the best outfielder in baseball?
@@saulgoodman8501 obviously that’s not what I’m saying. Bo had his struggles early on in his career and he’s come a long way, which is why I think the “horrendous” tag should be removed.
Your my favorite baseball CZcamsr keep it up
I was expecting my boy Gunnar at like 9 but not gonna complain about the love 💪
And that's why Francisco will be the cy young award winner
Love the vid mark! 12 days of Christmas is the most underrated baseball videos on CZcams
Henderson, Holliday and Westburg plus Ortiz will be the present/future infield of O's but don't really know for sure what position they will play. They all can play multiple positions and Henderson has the strongest arm of the 4 so SS will probably be his best position.
Great recap
Bo improved alot a defence, like alot he's a competent player there and should be higher than Dansby easily
I think you’re overstating how bad Bichette was defensively. He wasn’t great or even good by any means but he was better than the previous 2 years
Im sorry Marc but did you seriously put a guy with an OPS+ of TWENTY NINE ahead of Berti??? Idc if hes a shortstop or not what are you thinking man
I agree with your top 4!
Mets fans has his team SS ranked as number 1. Next video world series predictions with the Mets winning it all.
It’s crazy how much people underrate Bichette
In that dreadful Mets month of June it seemed like Lindor was the only one left who remembered how to hit, maybe Alvarez too.
Having dansby swanson over bichette is crazy. I’d don’t care how good your defense is if you are an average hitter
I’d probably have Bo slightly but he is horrible defensively, whereas Dansby is the complete opposite
@@elevatorelliot714 the thing is Bo wasn’t even bad defensively last year, he was pretty average. Only committed single digit errors
@@bockstaboi6638Yeah I probably overstated how bad Bo was defensively, but ai still don’t think he was great there. Again I’d still take him over Dansby but it’s close
Defense impacts games more than you think. Dansby Swanson is probably one of the 5 most valuable defensive players in all MLB, so even a 104 wrc+ last year made him a 5 win player. You're right that Bichette is a much better hitter with a 125 wrc+ last season, but his defense is nowhere close to Dansby so he was a 4 win player. Dansby also plays almost every game every season, whereas Bichette has missed some time with injuries
Arcia made the Allstar team because he did everything in the first half then cooled down a lot
Not to mention Lindor started off really cold, which was why Dansby got the 2nd NL SS spot
I think you’re ranking Cleveland’s SSs a little low. I know Rocchi only has a few MLB ABs, but he’s a top 60 prospect with a pretty prolific MiLB career. A more fair spot to put him would be around 20-22. I mean, Rocchio played significantly better than Mason Wynn at 25.
Disregard anything regarding Guards projected starting SS until we see opening day. It could be anyone. It could be Rocchio, it could be Arias, it could be Tena, it could be Naylor, it could be Vogt, who knows.
Damn I didn’t know Tim Anderson had only 1 home run I fell bad for him to
My only issue with Lindor is that he often feels like a very streaky hitter. He will either go for 7-10 with 6RBI and 2HR or he will go 1-15. There's no in between with the guy. He's a top 10 maybe even a top 5 but it's so difficult to say that he is a top 3 shortstop just because of his inconsistency
lindor is without a doubt the second best shortstop in the league
@@bradyerker If he is I have no complaints as a Mets fan. I'm just trying to look at it somewhat objectively---he has times where he might not even be a top 10 shortstop and other times when he is THE shortstop.
Baseball is a pretty streaky sport in general though, very few players have metronome-like consistency. Whatever it averages out to is pretty darn good.
Bichette improved at short stop. You should have mentioned that
You've gotta rank JP Crawford higher. His bat (OPS+) was 2nd best for SS behind Seager and his defense was skewed due to a small number of costly errors. You said he was a plus bat and a plus glove, but really his bat was in the top tier.
I know I'm biased, but his prior HR record was 9! He went to 19 this year! He's a non power guy but he launched 19 in a non hitter park! He's my captain!!
Bichette was far from horrendous last year defensively and actually took massive steps towards becoming a league average defensive SS. Which with that bat?? Top 5. Please please don't look at years prior to last and think that's his defensive ceiling
Criminally underrating Tovar checks out for the content I’ve seen on this channel lol
My list would be
1. Corey Seager
2. Bobby Witt
3. Lindor
4. Gunnur
5. Trea
6. Bichette
One of your best rankings.
Where are you going to put Matt McLain at for the reds, to me he is our best player and will be our everyday starter at probably 2nd SS or DH, I thought you would put him here at short since you didn't put him at second and have Elly at 3rd and CES at Dh, so would just love to hear your thoughts on Matt Mclain cause I'm seeing fireworks in year 2!
He did put him at 2nd. Think he was around 9th
When Marc is wearing his Mets jersey you know he’s going to say some wild shit
bo bichette is a top 5 SS in this league what is this…
Bobby Witt Jr. is better then Lindor right now. Marc obviously took some expectation into consideration in this ranking, and if we do, Witt played a lot better then expected then Lindor. He also plays better defense, steals more bases, and isn't nearly as streaky.
Witt could be the best SS in baseball at some point, but he’s not better defensively than Lindor. Not even close. Lindor had 7 DRS in a down year and still led the league in UZR with 9.1 Bobby had a -6 DRS and an 0.2 UZR. He improved greatly from his rookie season, but he’s not yet average defensively, whereas Lindor is elite.
Hes not better then lindor
I hate these rankings - a TB fan. (Why Wander, WHY!!!)
Finally a video without a brave in the top 5 😂
Highly sought after SS is a money pit. Almost every team wants an all star SS. The money is better spent on a great defensive SS and a bat on a different position. An OF with the same offensive stats as a SS seems to get paid less than the SS with the same numbers.
I’m fine with that 123
Especially the Witt Jr
Bibby Wott Jr in top 3 let's go
1:36 the guy that fell down in the stands ouch lol
Bo #1 ain’t no way Dansby Trea and Gunna over him
Number 3
@@Toews1247thank you Lindor isn’t even that good I know he hit 30 bombs but he hit like 255 so he not better
Are you saying Bo is the best shortstop or just top 3 or something cause I think anyone who says Seager isn’t the best is on something he might’ve been able to win the mvp if he wasn’t injured
14:28 ayooo cmon bruh 😭😭😭😂
Shouldn't 3B follow 2B and then SS? 2-3-4-6-5?
Eight seconds later my question is answered, already gotten over it.
Corey seager is the best shortstop of 23 and 23
Bo at 8 is a crime he’s top 5
i watch every single Blue Jays game, and Bichettes defense has improved LEAPS AND BOUNDS, dWar up, errors down. keep sleepin!!!!
Not to mention Volpe was supposed to be in triple A this season. So I’m expecting him to be a much better big league batter next season.
I was the one who caught lando’s home run against snell haha
And that is why Ruben Tejada is the best shortstop in the MLB
BO AT 8!!!! Lmaooooo dude gain some knowledge
You know why Arcia was an All Star over Lindor because Arcia hit .294 .345 .424 and Lindor hit .239 .320 .478
Bo was terrible at D, now he is fine, hope he continues to improve, but his bat makes up a lot of ground on the field. Clutch factor - what stat describes timely hitting? Segar is off the charts....polar opposite Vlad Jr.
my top 3
1. bobby witt jr
2. corey seager
3. francisco lindor
in what world is bobby witt jr not the best ss in the majors
You did good
When Gabriel arias hits 25 homeruns this year I’m going to revisit this video and laugh that you chose rocchio as the guardians starter. Love the content but you missed here
“And that’s why luisangel acuna is the greatest shortstop of all time”
Carlos Correa’s glove was amazing this passed season! Not sure what you’re talking about on that.
W Anthony Volpe ranking
I was hoping for Junior or Basabe to be the rays starting shortstop next year, Walls is just so mid. Play someone younger with more upside
Tomorrow is my birthday, so it's only appropriate that we get to Third Base then.
Xander Bogaerts and Gunnar Henderson are both 5?
I traded Wander Franco in my fantasy league right before he got arrested.
Your analysis of Bo Bichette was sub par at best
Shortstop is so weird because 10-17 are almost interchangeable but the top 8-9 separate themselves by a lot
Yeah Lindor is not better than Trea Turner. That’s Mets bias LMAO. Btw I’m a Phillies fan if you couldn’t tell.
Love the videos Marc keep up the great work
Look for Casey Schmitt and JD Davis to share 3rd base next year. Chapman is not the answer at 3rd for the Giants
bo bichette is a top 5 SS. you can't change my mind.
Calling it now, Bobby Witt Jr will be #1 next year
What’s drive line?
Bo Bichette over Gunnar Henderson right now now in my unbiased opnion, I think Gunnar needs to have one more good year before we can move him ahead of Bo
It’s not Taylor Walls for the Rays it’s now Junior Caminero
Witt will be number 1 next year and might be for a few years after that as well...
16:43 “so I had to drop him down 1 spot” while he proceeds to move him up 1 😂
He means like dropping the ranking
But in context Marc is clearly saying he took a step back offensively@@dgasparino
It was a typo. The next guy was number five. Bogaerts went from 5 to 6
fWaR leader since 2022
1. Aaron Judge
2. Freddie Freeman
3. Mookie Betts
4. FRANCISCO LINDOR
Matt McLain has to be on the reds somewhere. You left our best player out of here
Arcia was an all star how is he not top 15
Marc, you skipped the number 6th spot!
