  • Finally a fully functional, decent size, scale flying Blue Angel. I've been waiting for something like this since I was 10 years old. Here I am at 60 years now and I have one to play around with.
    These videos are a bit behind. I recorded this back in early July. July 8th to be exact.
    Maidening a $600 jet is nerve wracking. It took me a little bit before advancing the throttle.

    Glad to see that you are using expo and man did it help a lot! Why so many people are afraid of expo boggle my mind. It is a tool and your flight proves that! Good job on the maiden and figuring out how to get it right! Also be sure to check your rudder trim too because the rudder makes it roll a lot too.

      Thanks. I ended up having to replace the fuselage and gear last October... maybe September...after I tried to do a dirty roll just on the last pass before landing it. That's the bad thing about having flight modes with different rates. If you forget to switch before doing something crazy, bad things can happen. Was probably a bit too slow as well. I like to be as close to scale as possible, but you can't give up too much speed if doing dirty rolls. It's all good now though. New fuselage and its back to looking good again. On top of that, I have a second new one in the box (newer version with the reverse ESC) just in case. You know?
      I'm flattered that you watched this. I've seen most of your videos going all the way back to the 64mm days. That was some good stuff and so is your current content.
      I have a lot of videos from late summer and fall that I haven't even posted yet. But that groove is coming back around and the uploading bug is starting to bite. Thanks for the two comments.

    Nice work. I can say it is a Intimidating plane to fly. But if you are using expo, that really helps out a lot. I use 71% expo and a 150% rates. And my F18 flies really smooth.

      @gooniac33 Před 5 měsíci

      @@rcpilotwill I totally agree with the expo setting but not quite on the throw. I know it may be a resolution thing but you can tune it to fly how you want with expo and reduced travel. Having too much throw in any axis will always bite you.

    The maiden flight of mine wasn't quite that sketchy.. 😎
    I generally move the aileron and elevator linkages in one hole on the servo arms. My aileron rates are set to 70% with 25% expo in low rates and 85% with 33% in high rates. The elevator is 60% with 15% expo in low rates and 80% with 25% expo in high rates. Ordinarily, I want my high rates set to 100%. When you decrease the travel in your radio, it lowers its resolution. And since the servo doesn't rotate as far, the positioning accuracy of control surfaces isn't quite as good. The next time I get mine out, I'm going to move the linkages in another hole on the servo arms and increase the rates to make the servos rotate a little more. Also, my F-18 has a Spektrum AR636 AS3X/SAFE receiver that I reprogrammed with SAFE. So, I can flip a switch and it'll fly straight and level. My 73 year old eyes aren't what they used to be..

    • @markhyde43
      @markhyde43  Před 10 měsíci

      Some like it that way. I could almost not control it... but that was also hampered by a strong right roll. But with the 50% expo and 80% rates in aileron, it does great vertical aileron rolls. I'm sure it would do very well with 60%-65% expo and 100% + rates too. The expo is the big thing with this plane.
      You saw how it was on the first take off... Tha was with 25% expo. Clearly not enough.

      I set it up close to the manual. Some to what another friend told me who has the grey version. I set the Elevators to 46mm-47mm at 100% travel distance end to end
      Ailerons... couldn't get the same travel on both sides... so
      LH aileron was 25mm up, 23mm down
      RH aileron was 30mm up, 23mm down
      Rudder:
      LH... 33mm outboard throw & 25mm inboard throw
      RH... 30mm outboard throw & 25mm onboard throw.
      In my servo settings.. I bumped the aileron servo travel up to 120 because I wasn't getting the manual called out travel distance.
      Then I set my rates up as flight modes.... Speed, cruise and landing.
      My aileron Low rates (speed mode) are at 70% rate.... 50% expo
      Mid rates...(cruise mode) at at 80% with 50% expo.
      High rates...(landing mode) at 100% with 30% expo.
      Elevators are... low rate (speed mode) 75%with 50% expo.
      Mid rates ( cruise mode) are at 80% and 50% expo
      High rates (landing mode) are at 90% and 40% expo
      Rudder are at low rates (speed mode) 80%
      Mid rates 100% and 25%expo
      High rates (lending mode) 100% with 10%.
      Now I will change this a bit. I tried to do the blue angel dirty roll with the gear down and at about 25 feet high. Wouldn't roll fast enough and it stalled and pancakes into the ground. Repaired it with a new fuselage and new landing gear..... thus the reason I bought the second one new in the box as a future backup of I wreck this one again.
      Sp do not try an aileron roll with the gear down unless you are very high and know that you are in high rates. I think I was still in cruise mode at the time (mid rates). I may have to set it up differently so that my rates go to high wherever I lower the gear. It's too much to keep track of. So beware.
      Anyway. With these rates.... it flys very scale in mid rates at cruise and high speed. You just have to be conscious of where your rates are at all times and all configurations.

    The blue boxes are crap. I have only had 2. My F18 was malfunctioning right out the box. Removed it and installed a light controller, hooked everything directly to the receiver. My 70mm F16 has a smaller blue box which worked for about 12 flights them the gear started acting up. Removed it, hooked everything directly to the receiver. Both have worked flawlessly since. Freewing makes nice planes, but I'll never put another one of the blue boxes in the air, unless i throw it towards the trashcan.

      @markhyde43  Před 3 měsíci +1

      😆 that's funny... throw it towards the trash can...
      I don't mind keeping it in there for the lights. I Probably should put the gear on a Y and direct to the receiver because I can't afford to have that not work. There's no sequencing I guess because the doors are mechanical.

    • @shelbyseelbach9568
      @shelbyseelbach9568 Před 3 měsíci

      @@markhyde43 The box is simply an unnecessary potential, and likely from my experience, failure point. Simply don't need it. Even if there were sequenced gear doors, a sequencer is ten dollars, and a failure in it, it isn't very likely to cut power to the entire servo train like this box can.

Secondo te cosa consigli di fare? Ciao grazie

      I can't be sure. I have a satellite antenna receiver in there to help ensure that I always have reception to the receiver. Whether that is effective or not, I don't know. But with an expensive model, i thought, why not?
      Also i don't know if you are running you're throttle through the blue control box along with the flight controls. My throttle signal cable runs straight from ESC to receiver.
      But no worries. I've crashed my plane twice and now have to use my backup plane still new in the box. Not gonna repair the original one three times.

    Looks severely nose heavy with far too much throw... I'd recommend starting at 95mm and working back from there. The manual CG is far too nose heavy. I fly mine at 100mm, just be sure to adjust your neutral elevator position accordingly.

    • @markhyde43
      @markhyde43  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I'll have to recheck it. I have damaged it since this video and have replaced the fuselage and gear. Haven't Flown it yet this year due to weather and season. But i will rebalance it and do it again.
      I do know that the CG was set much farther aft than the called out CG. I have a local friend with the same plane started near his CG, which fly's great for him. I can't explain that nose over at take off. And it's been a minute since it's flown. I'll have to rewatch some of these videos and check my transmitter to see what's dialed in for trims. My sense I probably did have to trim down a lot and i believe i re set my elevator neutral all ready.... But I still had the dip after takeoff even after that.
      We'll see with this new fuselage, gear and elevators what i does.

    • @fern6978
      @fern6978 Před 4 měsíci

      @markhyde43 Yes, your neutral elevator position is likely incorrect and causing the nose to drop IF your cg is 95mm aft or more. Cheers!
