I got same problem with my 1990 Mercedes w124 300 diesel engine.. It's really nice to watch your videos, I learned something. Thanks :)

My 1989 OM602 engine with 200K on it was very quiet when cold but as it warmed up a fairly loud tick tick tick comes about. I changed the tappets, no difference, new injector, regular oil changes with flushes and diesel purge no difference. Couldn't find any garage to take it on so now in the process of changing the engine. Might seem extreme but cheaper to find another engine than pay silly garage fees.

Thank you for your clear videos! I think you explain it very well. I would like to see a video of how to check for timing chain wear.

Hello. Well, I have the same car, year 1993 with 275.000 km on the odometer, but could have more. I had the about the same noises a couple of months ago. There is a clicking noise that maybe caused by hydraulic valve lifters. There is a second noise on the background which frequency seems to be half or one third of rpm, and that sounds like a soft beat and blow, alltogether. Identical to the one you show in this video.
To remediate the noises I changed the valve lifters (all of therm) and changed the chain tensor. Now sound is a lot less, but the second noise still shows after the engine turn hot. If I rev up the engine for a while, the sound dissapear. May come back again later.
With a cold engine the sound is not present. Only after the engine gets hot. But I still can make it dissapear revving up the engine (over 2000 rpm).
Other possibilities I am considering to be causing the noise:
    1) Alternator.
    2) Vacuum pump.
    3) Rubber strap of the fan, alternator, etc. on the engine.
    4) Fan clutch.
    5) Poor seal on vacuum hoses causing some trouble somewhere.
    6) Low pressure on oil.
    7) Dirt on injection pump and pipes, injectors.
Next step I will make a Diesel purge.
I will prepare a wood stick to put on my ear to help find the place where the noise comes from.
The oil pressure gauge starts well, mark full with cold engine. After getting hot it lowers one third down. Sometimes it vibrates. There are no visible leaks of oil. The car runs very well, last trip at 110 to 120 km/h yield 12,5 km/liter which I think is very good (two full tanks). No smoke, no oil loss. I also accelerated until 160km/h easily a couple of times. Going up a hill.
You have a lot of experience with this cars, combining it with the information I give to you now, and the real cause of the noise you found on the car of your video, you may assing probabilities to any of these 7 possible causes.
By the way, what was the problem on that car?
Thank you a lot for sharing your experience with us.
    Best,
    José from Chile.

Collapsed lifters, the OM603 is known for this, just did mine couple months ago, exact same noise but also I would investigate the vacuum pump, sounds like another noise too.

hello friend ! finally, I did get all the lifter out and there was one worn out. there was a kinda slot on the top, made by the camshaft lobe, like it was not turning! so I'd replace it with a new INA one. I dismantled the other one, all a part and they were very clean! but the trick is that there is a re- bolt order for the camshaft ! unfortunately, a broked the camshaft in two pieces, so I have to order a used one on E-bay!!! now: no more tiklin and very happy ! thanks for sharing all of your video ! Max, from Quebec, Canada.

    Hi Mr Diesel.
    Thanks for all your videos.
About this noise, I have the same when you rev the engine at cold temp, but in my engine, at cold and warm temp, and only when engine is around 1000rpm.
My engine is OM605.911 from year 95, with 240000km.
I bought past week so I will do all basic manteinance next week (engine flush, oil, air, steering power and fuel filters, Petronas 5w40 oil change...).
Belt tensioner shock absorber was replaced two years ago.
Which was the solution of the noise?
    Follow with these great jobs.
    Thanks

    Hello.
I have a W124 250D from 1990 and I follow your great channel. Thank you for sharing all these useful info with us.
I had a leak on the 5 delivery valves of the injection pump. So, I bought the dedicated tool and I replaced the copper and O rings.
It solved the leak but now I have a strong clicking noise.
I checked the oil level and I also removed the cover of the hydraulic valves tappets to check if the tappets have to be changed or not.
    Conclusion: the tappets are ok.
This is a good news but on the other side I still don't find the cause of my clicking noise.
Do you have and idea about what could be the reason of this clicking noise?
    Thank you!
    Armand

I have the same noise on a OM601 , Only on a cold engine tho ... I have replaced all injector nozzles, diesel purged the engine , changed the filters and yet i still have it. My guess is either the Hydralic Lifters (esepecially if its driven with bad Oil before) or the VacuumPump. If you found a solution that'd be great :)

@@oleggordey This is coming from the lifters.
It is a rather soft noise. My brothers om602 had bad (but new) injectors and that sounded like a rattlecan.
If the noise is very harsh (like a rattle can) and is most pronounced at very light throttle at low RPMs and it goes away when engine braking, than it is the injectors.
