Just play through that whole album. It’s mesmerizing. The music is timeless and lyrics hold up to this day. The creative mindsets of this band are unique and necessary.

There is an animated video that's a cool watch with this song. Also there is a live in Toronto 2003 video of this song that's a great display of how amazing these 3 are. The Xanadu, live Exit Stage Left 1981 video is a great introduction to what Rush could do live.🤯

The change in music genres is representing you changing radio stations..on the endless wavelength.
Neil wrote The Spirit Of Radio as a tribute to local radio station CFNY, which he'd often listen to on his morning commute, and as a commentary on the increasing commercialization of the radio industry. In the same vein, I'd like to recommend 2112, as performed at Toronto's Molson Amphitheater in 1997, their epic 7 part, 20 minute, side-long, "stick it up your @$$" response to record execs who were threatening to drop them after their third album if they didn't come up with more short, radio-friendly songs. Yes, It really is just three dudes!! Of course, there is a fair amount of over-dubs involved, but they played this in concert often and it sounds just as good LIVE!! The song switch-ups are meant to replicate the turning of the radio dial and landing on different genres of music.☮
The back and forth between rock and reggae late in the track is said to represent changing radio stations.
Rollercoaster is an excellent analogy! Though I would add that the boys are acrobats performing on a rollercoaster! :D

Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. Lol, in his first Rush video, our reviewer thought Neil looked like Steve from Blue’s Clues. These 90’s kids, lol. My 26 year old son would make the same analogy - was his favorite show when younger.

The changes in the song is supposed to signify the changing of the radio station’s. They transition into other movements flawlessly. That’s Prog. Rock brother man at its finest!

Songs for radio had to be short and it was charted it. To have your music on radio you had to make compromises. The music changes in the song like changing the dial on the radio.

There is not a "Steve" in the band. I think you are referring to Neil Peart, who was every drummers' favorite drummer.
Not only didn't you listen to it but you didn't listen to it, it's about the supposed freedom of radio until the excecutives get involved and pay for their music to be played rather than someone else's.
