This was super helpful! I did the padding right away and it worked, but the drive got SUPER noisy. I wonder if a little cardboard taped to the top might do the same trick instead of something stuck on the magnet. Though for now it's fine, and it might actually be settling down and getting quieter, I'll have to spin up a few more discs and see!

My drive struggles to eject (maybe the magnet), then has trouble locking after it closes. My disc tray also seems very unstable. Lot of wiggle room from side to side, and will jar to one side or the other (when closing or opening) which prevents it from doing what it's supposed to. Hoping I don't have to buy a new drive or whole new box to fix it. I did remove the tray completely while cleaning it once or twice. Maybe I threw off the gear positioning when I did that? Or maybe the plastic gears or rails need to be greased?
Hard to say based on just this info but a lot of excess wobble sounds likely that part of the mechanism is broken, worn down significantly, or missing.
The tray got stuck for the first time ever since I bought it used in 2007. I moved it around and it opened. I wiped the tray and air dusted it. Obviously that's a short term fix and I'm gonna have to open it up or say bye bye to it.
I never saw that little hole in all the years I’ve had mine. I used it and the drawer popped right out. It’s hard to see little things like that when it’s all black.

The white gear is missing? I would disassemble the drive to see if it dislodged and fell somewhere deeper inside as it would need to be replaced for proper drive functionality (and could cause jams if hanging out loose inside).
I’m surprised you didn’t check the clock battery. Is that recommended to do? All I have on my original Xbox is a green blinking light where the disk tray won’t open.

I got a console from a thrift store and it has an apparent mod chip installed on boot. My issue is that on pressing the eject button the console just powers off. The aux eject button does nothing and even taken apart I can't get the tray to slide out.
Update: So I got the disc drive to work, it was coming a little bit off one of the side rails and jamming. It opens and closes, but the console constantly power cycles while doing it. Gets stuck in an infinite open/close/shutoff/startup loop
@@FantasticQuack Yeah, I got the tray to slide correctly but it doesn't play well with the buttons, I'll just have to leave it disconnected and try FTPing. I was thinking trace damage or bad wires like you said.

I have another problem and im hoping you or anyone could help with. For some strange reason the green light is blinking, like its blinking whenever you wanna ooen thr tray, however its blinking and thr CD tray is not working. Its not popping open or closing by itself like its suppose to non stop. It also just makes a weird noise and does nothing. I havent played on it in years and i wanted to play my childhood games. I blew into the thing that the CD tray comes from to get any dust and that didnt help either. Idk what to do. Its not the red ring either its just the green light blinking non stop.
Sorry I haven't run into this before but it might be something related to the eject button itself. I would check to see if it has corrosion or anywhere nearby on the board. If you manually eject the tray with a paper clip and insert a game will it read the game or does it not give a picture on the screen even?

You have to push pretty hard with the paper clip sometimes. I'd keep at that for a bit even though you can get the game out by disassembling, it's just slightly more risky.
hey i followed your video and i thought i had done everything right, but now my xbox won’t turn on all together, i didn’t feel like i damaged anything inside but now i’m super bummed and worried that i did. any advice?
This process is very unlikely to cause any damage, and if you had it would have probably been some gross accident and you'd know about it. I'd recommend checking all the cables again making sure they are plugged in snug/correctly--particularly those for the power supply.
Mine wont open even with the clip. Whats driving me crazy is when i took it back they had just press the button then it worked but bringing it back home it againt wont work. Please help!
a little tricky to troubleshoot based on this. It worked at the store but not at home? Maybe just need to clean some of the internals. Sometimes you have to push that small button pretty hard if you are trying to manually eject. Hope you can get it figured out!
@@FantasticQuack It still felt very tight, albeit with slight curvature. But Basically It goes in fine, but when it pops-out the disc tray goes *slightly* to the left, whereafter it gets stuck. So I have to nudge it to the side every single time to get it back in.

If it's just in 2 pieces or something I'd try to repair it with super glue and smoothing out any seams/imperfections with fine grit sand paper. Or if you own a 3D printer that's another option.

Disagree, if you wanted the spacers off the magnet for some reason they would need to go on that white plastic piece which can move around in the larger circular opening, meaning the spacers might randomly end up off center with the disc. Meanwhile the magnet is always in a fixed position and hence it makes the most sense to put the spacer there.
@@FantasticQuack the piece you may be referring to is not present on screen very long, but I would think that a adhesive foam washer (readily available online in various sizes) would fit the space above nicely, and being that it too is circular and larger would not be as great a risk of dislocating like the small strips. Just my worry, it that magnet is spinning, those little strips are coming off eventually, but not two circular shapes spinning in tandem.
For anyone else here who is too scared/lazy to take it all apart and dig around, I got mine to open by shoving the paperclip in the top center of the disc tray (toward the magnet)

Need to push that little button quite hard sometimes. If you can get something more rigid than a paper clip (like a pottery needle tool or something) that will help push it with more force. Worst case you can still get at it by disassembling the drive.
The random jump cuts make this a horrible tutorial. Sure when unscrewing things it makes sense but you don’t properly show what you’re doing or where something is
Thanks for this feedback, I always disliked 30+ minute tutorials where I had to skip through most of it just to get to the important parts. So my philosophy has always been to cut out that kind of fat, and in so doing may sometimes move past things too quickly. Can you point out something specific you would have like to have seen more time spent showing/describing? This is one of my older vids and I think I've improved since then, but still I'll keep this in mind to make sure these vids are as useful as possible--that's ultimately the goal.

I’m using this little thing used to open up the SIM card tray on a iPhone and it won’t work does it have to be a paper clip?
I'm assuming that tool doesn't have a long enough tip. Paper clip is just the most convenient/common option.
What tools did you use in the video?
torx and philips screw drivers, tweezers. Don't have the exact sizes. Trying to do better in newer videos by making a tool list.

Something on the inside (wires or otherwise) is not seated properly. Impossible to know without seeing it, unfortunately.

I Swear that's what happened with the pc I built. Screen wouldn't come on at home but always did at their shop.

Probably dont want to put spacers on magnet. Put them on the metal plate above as it has a circular imprint...
