The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square present Mack Wilberg's arrangement of "The Holy City" with guest soloist Stanford Olsen. The song is composed by Stephen Adams with lyrics by F. E. Weatherly.
Lyrics:
Last night I lay asleeping,
There came a dream so fair,
I stood in old Jerusalem,
Beside the temple there.
I heard the children singing,
And ever as they sang,
I thought the voice of Angels
From Heav'n in answer rang,
I thought the voice of Angels
From Heav'n in answer rang:
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna to your King!"
And then I thought my dream was chang'd,
The streets no longer rang,
Hushed were the glad Hosannas,
The little children sang.
The sun grew dark with mystery,
The morn was cold and chill.
As the shadow of a cross arose,
Upon a lonely hill,
As the shadow of a cross arose,
Upon a lonely hill.
"Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna to your King!"
And once again the scene was chang'd,
New earth there seemed to be.
I saw the Holy City
Beside the tideless sea,
The light of God was on its streets,
The gates were open wide,
And all who would might enter,
And no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night,
Or sun to shine by day,
It was the new Jerusalem
That would not pass away.
It was the new Jerusalem
That would not pass away.
"Jerusalem! Jerusalem
Sing for the night is o'er,
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna forever more!
Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna forever more!"
Episode 4327. Aired August 19, 2012 - Hudba
I used to sing this every Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. I always cried after singing it and it took all my might not to cry for the second verse. Thank you Jesus for dying for me. I love you with all my heart, mind and soul.
His face, his eyes, his voice. He looks like he is singing of something he has seen.
Such a rendition can only be achieved when one has truly experienced the messiah and hopes for the glory to come and the resurrection morn!! Hallelujah
I am a Seventh-Day Adventist but I must recognize that this is the best choir of the Earth. Thanks for praising our Almighty God in the correct way.
Same here
Same here.
Same here.
Same here.
Amen!!
It's just after Easter 2020. They buried our Lord but they couldn't keep him down. Corona virus is everywhere but so is God. Jesus is risen and he will carry us through this
pandemic!
I first heard this song in church when I was between 4-6 years old--I was riveted, it took my breath away! The singer was an older man with a deep bass voice, and I always wanted to be in church in case he sang it again. I'm 69 now and I love this song as much as I did the first time I heard it! :)
I was a child too when I first heard it - and I had the same reaction! In my experience, it was a woman who sang it. I am also in my 60s now.
I, too, loved it as a child. As a teenager I had the glorious experience of accompanying a man with a wonderful voice when he sang this at church. I will never forget that experience. Such a joy to listen to this beautiful performance today.
GOD bless you. Amen
In my later years I have become immobile, when I hear this song I close my eye s and picture myself. In the most beautiful Cathedral
I just read Revelation 22 and this song comes alive as John describes The New Jerusalem that will come when Christ comes again. Hosannah for ever more!!!! Beautiful song. Beautiful message. Beautiful voices.
Thank you Mormon Tabernacle Choir for glorifying Jesus Christ our Lord!
Amen!🙏🏻❤️✝️ they are such great examples of God fearing Christians!
The New Jersusalem "WHERE NO ONE IS DENIED" Praise God Indeed
One of the most beautiful and moving hymns ever composed. His rich, baritone voice, along with the choir and orchestra make this an unforgettable song to God.
My absolute favorite !❤❤❤
This song came to me last night and needed to find it. Hosanna to his name! Jerusalem!
I closed my eyes and it felt like I was in heaven
I'm not a Christian but this song is very moving.
I miss the days of hearing this at Easter the good old days at church
This brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. I can only imagine the volume and size of the Heavenly choir someday! His voice just gives me a hint of it with the choir singing with him! Love love love it!
As a child, I heard my small church choir sing this, I fell in love with it then and soon followed the Lord into repentance and baptism. I am now 79 years old and looking very forward to that New Jerusalem soon to appear.
This performance was magnificent. This has always been one of my favorite songs. I had the privilege of singing it many times in our school chorus. 65+ years later I still know every word, but please don't ask me what day it is.....
I sang this as a boy soprano when in the Chalk Church choir. I sang it with sisters Margaret and Mary accompanied by Les on the organ. The song has stayed with me as my favourite throughout my life - I'm 73 now and listen to it frequently to give me a huge uplift - especially over the last two years.
Daddy I miss you singing this to us....I still love this more than 50 years ago
I sang this beautiful song in my high school choir. His voice is amazing. What a gift. My husband and I love yo hear Tenors using their gift to encourage.
I also sang this piece in high school. Every time I hear it, I am moved again, like being in heaven. This man performed it perfectly, a wonderful voice.
I was going to stay home from Church this morning, but after having listened to the wonderful voice of Mr, Olsen and the great MTC, I am headed for Church and to worship my Savior, Jesus Christ...Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful!!!!
I agree with you.
We must wirship Jesus everyy minute of the day.
No matter if you're at home, at church, or wherever you are! It's a delight listening to such angels singing to our Lord.
I am so happy this powerful song touched your heart!!
So lovely...
Absolutely Magnificent. Thanks for sharing!
This song acknowledges the Mighty God of Israel, and the Holy Ghost bears witness unto our hearts that it is true! It doesn't matter where you are from or what language you speak, It goes directly to your heart. May the Mighty God of Israel bless you all who listen to this beautiful song!
This song takes me back to my childhood my mother was a trained singer in opera and this was her favourite song to sing along with the Ave Maria and I still love this song and I just love this choir
By far, this is the best rendition I have heard of this wonderful hymn. Tears always come to my eyes as I listen to it.
Thank you Lord for giving me this opportunity to listen to this voice and this most beautiful hymn
New Jerusalem, hope can meet parents there....
Who's with me even today can't get enough listening to this song?

Please let him live a while he's only 62 years old, then he can go to Heaven say 2050ish
This songs draws us closer to heaven where we can hear the angelic voices.
This is about my 100th time listening to this beautiful rendition. I can imagine myself being in the New Jerusalem. We who know Jesus personally will be there in all His Glory! Praise his name!
I am playing this over and over again. I think he believes every word he sings. His facial expressions come across as he sings from his heart.
I really appreciate the mormon tabernacle choir.i.I believe they are the best and I have watched them forever.

The choir is the best part of the Mormon Church.
From South Africa What a magnificent voice. Holy city always gives me goosebumps this time of the year. I was a soprano soloist
in the choir and the Holy City moved me to the Nth degree
My mom used to play this song on the piano and sing it when I was growing up. It's one of my favorites!! This version of this song really inspires me!!

As Jewish residents of this cherished holy land, we extend a heartfelt welcome to you and express our deep love and admiration for Jesus our savior!
It is inconceivable to think there would be even one person in this whole world who would give this sound a thumbs down.
The lost souls of this world don't hear the Shepherd's voice like you and I do brother.
My ex-Wife would sing this Hymn in Church and during a College Concert. She would get a standing ovation at both venues. She was a Mezzo Soprano.
Wow, what a voice. Can’t stop listening to this man.

A song I used to sing in my church in WV. Brings back memories as my son was playing the organ. And ask me to do the solo
He was playing for church. I liked the part the doors were open wide and no one was denied.

Thank you lord I needed this!
His beautiful voice is astounding! When that is combined with the tear in his eye and his facial expressions telling stories all together it was impeccable.
I can’t start my week without Music and the Spoken Word. Thanks for your inspiring music.
Always takes me back to the beginning. As a very young boy I sat in rapt attention whenever my big sister sang this anthem in church. Her soaring soprano swept me to a realm so beautiful and glorious I wished the song would go on forever. Little did I know then the joy that awaited me when I was saved and received The Holy Ghost according to the scripture. To understand the fullness of this anthem and message was the unspoken desire of my life. Thank God “He saves such as be of a contrite spirit.” PWG
Se COMME-ÇA que nous devons tous fournir l'énergie pour rendre gloire à Dieu d'Israël.
Today is the 20th death anniversary of my grandfather. This was his favourite hymn and I ended up loving it too. Everytime I hear it it reminds me of him.
I don't usually make comments - but this is so outstanding as an inspiring musical performance that I just had to say it.
What a phenomenal Voice! Incredible!! To God be the glory!
I love this song so much cause it's always give me hope of internal life in Christ
my mom used to sing this in church. Wish there was youtube back then so I could hear her again
What a moving piece. His voice and spirit gave me chills.
Yes and amen 🙏 HALLELUJAH. 😇
It was lovely to see someone sing without arm waving and drama - just to stand there and sing. Wonderful
What a wonderful tenor!
It reminds me so of the swedish famous tenor Jussi Björling.
Thank you so very very much!
I hope that Stanford never quits the choir,
He's my uncle, and as far as I know he'll sing with them anytime they ask! He's lost a lot of weight since this video so he's ready to belt out with them anytime!
What a beautiful rendition, praise the Lord ❤️🙏
Brings back memories of the glorious singing of this song back home with the mass choir. Hopefully I get back to singing properly again soon
Synger nydelig. Jeg blir helt rørt av musikken din. Nydelig sang og røst. Vakkert. Barn og kjærlighet. Tusen hjertelig takk. Klem fra mamma Bente

You have a voice of an angel. Hosanna, praise be to God. What a great explanation of our Saviors' roll in the redemption. Because of Him, ALL can enter the gates. All we need do is raise our eyes heavenward. Thank you choir, organists, orchestra, Brother Olsen, and the hundreds of others who help this choir 'Rejoice, The Lord is King' world wide.

He is risen
My parish men’s choir used to sing this on Easter Saturday night Mass. I often left the two hour Mass with tears in my eyes!
This man has a beautiful tenor voice! I sing tenor & alto. He, along with others who sing, have a gift. I sang in our church choir but for personal reasons I left. I sing a lot at home & of course at church.

Beautiful
Always loved this song! My church choir sang it today for Palm Sunday!
This rendition is awesome, but we had a Bishop many years ago that did this song so powerful, that it nearly made my Heart burst out of my chest. That Bishop was Delmont Truman, the Father of Dan Truman of Diamond Rio!!
My uncle, Lester Dunn, was Dean of the School of Fine Arts at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma, and he sang this for an Easter Sunday service. I remember sitting beside my Grandma Middleton, and she kept wiping tears from her eyes. Her daughter, my precious aunt Margaret, an accomplished pianist and also on the faculty, accompanied Uncle Lester.
I was born in 1941, grew up on the family farm in Kansas, and we usually drove down to Oklahoma for Christmas and other holidays.
These are treasured memories and it's always a joy to hear this song.
SNU is about 5 miles south of our house 💖. We need to find a schedule of their performances so we can go hear some fine music.
Thank you for this beautiful hymn,it touches my heart to hear such beautiful music and hymn singing praises to our Lord Jesus Christ,God Bless all whose listening this morning.
Lovely! brings back memories of going to church every Sunday and hearing these beautiful hymns!! God is good!!
The orchestration was beautiful. 🥹
My father, a tenor, taught me to sing the Holy City sometime in 1947 when I was about 9 years. Till now, I still sing this beautiful song. Praise the Lord!
You are the angel,Mr.Olsen!
His words are perfectly clear.
Hossana in the Highest! Hosanna forever more!!!🙏❤️
