The distance between your eye and the scope. I learned that from this video.

So eye relief is essentially just how fare away from your face the scope is, right?

Is there such a thing as too much eye relief? I am new to shooting, & I prefer shooting with both of my eyes open with iron sights, & I was thinking of getting Vortex Crossfire II Scout scope but I was wondering if there would any disadvantage to it if I were to mount where a regular scope would go?

What is “eye box” and how does it differ fro eye relief? What is their relation during scope setup ?

For many years I have heard hunters say they want more eye relief for their rifles. Right around 6" (no less than 5" at max magnification) would be ideal. Yet manufacturers keep ignoring what hunters really want. Why is this? Manufacturers seem to be getting away with not giving us what we want because there is no one that has made a popular scope model like a 3x9x40 in a 6" eye relief (or about any other model for that matter). I have even read some articles about it in the past complaining about this. It's very frustrating.

I have a bushnell elite 4500. The eye relief is something like 3 inches. Its on a browning x bolt and i find i have to move my head forward almost to the forward edge of the comb. The scope is as far back as it will go. Is there anything else in thar price range with the same quality (made actually in japan) that has better eye relief?

looking for a scout scope to put on a 444 Marlin rifle want to get it about 6" or more but not too far from my eye just want low power for hunting but may be go to 7 for sighting it in. So far all I can find is the Bushnell scout 2-7 x 36 7.9" or eye relief . How close could I put my eye or will I be stuck with 7.9" Don't want to spend to much as I do not know weather I will like it or not.
