Hearing that it was banned on certain radios during the Gulf War makes this song hurt even more to me. My dad operated in Desert Storm and oversaw POW in the Gulf War, and even though he came back alive, he came back changed. Sometimes it feels like the war took my dad before I ever got to meet him, because he went to war so young and I was born over a decade after he returned. I’ve always seen the effects of that war on him, whether that be how he has the voice of a sergeant, how daunting it was to see him in uniform as I grew up, or how he falls silent whenever we pass by the Desert Storm memorial in my rural town. He may have come back alive, and his mother may never have had to bury her son, but often I wonder if my dad ever came back from Iraq or if Anthony came back instead. Kate’s song hits my heart in the right spot to feel tears welling up whenever I listen to it. She nailed the daunting feeling and the emotions behind families affected by war.

Fun fact: "Suicide is Painless" is a song written as a theme song for the movie M*A*S*H, a "dark comedy" satirical movie about war surgeons during the Korean War. This was later adapted into the 1970s TV show by the same name, which moved from "dark comedy" into "sitcom." It has a reputation for being very progressive even by today's standards, incredibly anti-war, and moving quickly between lighthearted comedy and the grim cost of war.
Also, since the original M*A*S*H is satirical, the lyrics were written by the songwriter’s then-15yo son, so it could be as edgy as possible and “the stupidest song ever written,” as demanded by the director. Source: Wikipedia.

Grew up poor almost homeless twice by 18 (only lived on the streets as a kid nearly lost my house as a teen) the army didn’t seem too bad, depending on what you took you could get real world experience, thankfully things have changed and im on my way to being a chef

This song was also banned on several other occasions! Here in Argentina it has been censored because of the relationship people give it with the Malvinas War and the last military dictatorship.

Yeah it gives me the same vibes as Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" and I love those kinds of calming melodies with depressing lyrics because they really... how do I describe it... They get the point across in a way that really sticks- and they're a lot easier to sing lol

My father is alive but he lived in poverty when he was young and went to the Myanmar Military. He got released with diagnosis of mental illness. He joined the MILITARY NOT BY UNIVERSITY! He was a worker solider and he climbed to captain level, when he came back, he was traumatized and abusive. I don't blame him but I do too. My Grandma is dead now but I think all of us are mourning of her bright son, my non existent non abusive dad, my mom's sweet husband if he wasn't traumatized. He is a great man but he has PTSD and other issues.
