As a 72 year old man I'm tickled that 17 year olds are discovering Kate Bush. You like Kate? Try The Dreaming (1982). It's the most original and experimental album she ever made, and I suspect that's why it was overlooked at the time. On the basis of that record alone Kate's a genius. Every song on that album is formally audacious musically and lyrically like a compressed novel. When I first heard Sat In My Lap on the radio I was stunned. It sounded like a playful mashup of "pop" music and avant-garde European art music! I had to find out where it came from and who made it. I discovered The Dreaming and Kate Bush. That was 40 years ago. I'm so glad Kate is finally getting the recognition she has always deserved.
Thanks for the recommendation! I have been a fan of music from the 70s and 80s since my teen years around the 2000s, but thanks to some very unfortunate luck it seems, I never looked into her work before - until she exploded back into the world recently. And it's some amazing stuff!
Before running up that hill was released to stranger things, I listened to it all the time! I’m 11 years old, and I think it’s a great song. Kate was angry tho with the song once, since it was called “A Deal With God” but she had to change it. So that’s why it’s called Running Up That Hill. Kate should have gotten the recognition years ago because it’s a huge hit! (I am saying it in a positive way) I love the song, and I’m happy that it’s more popular than ever!
The reason the song is resonating so well with todays generation via stranger things is simple, it’s an original song sung by a superb artist that never sounded like anything else in 85 and that also applies in 2022. People just recognise brilliance☺️
I don't know, man. I don't think "todays (sic) generation" really gives a shit about originality or "brilliance". Look at the garbage that's produced and consumed now. It's popular because it's on a show.
Yes, this is true, but there is one more thing. Currently a very dark, ominous cloud is over the heads of the people in the world (the threat of the World War III.) and this song gives back something from this suppressed, bad feeling about the future.
I love how Stranger Things has introduced this masterpiece to a younger generation. Before it was kinda a forgotten 80s hidden gem. The 1985/1986 synth based productions were incredible and Kate Bush is an absolute legend
Even though she's miming on a mid-week light entertainment show, this performance is amazing. She has so much stage presence and charisma. It's such a shame she never liked touring. As someone who's loved her since I was a kid in the 70's, I'd give a kidney or two to see her live. I'm so glad that the world has finally caught up with awesome you are.
From a current teenager: I've been listening to her for years with people my age not knowing who she is when I mentioned her, so I'm SO happy that more kids my age are finally listening to and admiring this goddess!
So beautifully said. I so often gift people, strangers, so needful of the sensual word. Those grand fat deep words in chaos, brilliant comes that light, 💋of love.
Only getting more amazing as the years go by, Kate will never be equalled since the era of the singer-songwriter is effectively over. Besides, there was no man before her
Ikr. like all her vids back then. She gave everything to act out the emotion portrayed. My she did it well using her melodic vocals, facial expression & ballet skills...I'm mean com'on 👏.
I watched a documentary, people that worked with her said she just kinda possessed and live in the world of the song she sing at all time. Like being in a trance, fully indulge in it.
Eh, this already reached very close to the top of the charts when it was released and Kate Bush has had other hits that reached no 1. back in the 80s. Wuthering Heights was UK's number one back when she was 19 so it's not at all like she had been waiting for it for her whole life if that's what you're suggesting...
@@sluxi I wasn't suggesting she was waiting for a number 1 all her life. Not at all. You are putting words in my mouth with your presumptuous, incorrect, cynical assumptions. I was saying it is rare for there to be such a huge gap between releasing a song and that song reaching number 1. And I meant that in a positive way. Go spread your cynicism elsewhere
@@A_friendwithoutbenefits Well, I absolutely did not put words in your mouth since I said I wasn't sure if that was what you were saying. In any case you came off like that. Kate Bush was a legend already before this one song rising to the top of the charts again so while I'm sure she is glad to see the song there it's unlikely to be a life changing event for her. It's nice that more and more people are finding out about the song again though. Look, it's not that I'm cynical. Just strikes me as belittling the long career of an extremely distinguished artist to put it the way you did. I do believe you didn't mean to imply anything like that.
@@sluxii knew Kate Bush is a legend already, and I was already aware of her achievements including those you've mentioned. It's condescending you are explaining Kate Bush to me as if I knew nothing about her before this track. I grew up in the UK in the 80s, I am well aware
I first heard this song sung by a group called Placebo. My middle son ended his life 12.24.08...this song was on his Playlist (MP3 Player) along with a lot of Placebo, I was hooked. This song has so much meaning to me...because if I only could, Make a deal with God, I'm get him to swap our places! I love and miss you so very much Jordan Michael 💙 Always on my mind, Forever in my heart! ❤️
I was a teenager in the 80's and just remember Kate Bush as being pretty weird. There was so much good music back then that I didn't really take much notice of her's. Now, I listen to her songs and am amazed how good they really are. She was probably way ahead of her time and now we are just catching up.
Are you American? I am curious if Americans thought she was weird. I am American and fell in love with Running up that HIll. There was no turning back after hearing that song. Her music was too advanced for most Americans, it took our country 37 years to catch up to where Kate was 37 years ago.
Listening to Kate all over again at the age of 57 just makes me feel 20 again. She was always 'experimental', but she usually got it right despite going against what was considered 'commercial'. I went to a school back in 1982 with a lad who was probably more of a musical geek than any of us, and he considered Kate to be a goddess of music and was 'out and proud' of his position. With hindsight of nearly 40 years, I would say that he was on the money as her music never grows old, and has outgrown a lot of music from the time.
Yeah while there was a lot of good & great 80s music there was also a big pile of shite too IMO. [most of the Stock, Aitken & Waterman catalogue for example] But some gems stand the test of time & Kate's music is definitely on that list. I always especially loved Dream of Sheep & Hello Earth from Hounds of Love but uh, I loved the entire album too if I'm honest. Oh & yes, your friend was correct. LOL.
I'm 52... loved Kate from Wuthering Heights and The Man with the Child in His Eyes (my all time favourite - memories of hearing it on the radio at th beach in '78). It was this song, Running Up that Hill, plus the Hounds of Love album that really captured me as a lifelong fan. The whole album (all of them, actually) and especially The Dreaming. I have an old photo my sister took of me when I was 15, sitting on my bed and proudly displaying the cover of The Dreaming album. To me, Kate is the most inspiring artist ever born.
I was in college back in the early 80's in Washington when I walked in on a friend playing Kate Bush The Dreaming. It was new at the time in 1982. I fell instantly in love with her music. I really wish she had been as big in the US as she was in the UK. But I got every album. Kate Bush, Nina Hagen and Suzanne Vega will always be my favorite Female singers.
I'm glad Stranger Things is introducing new generations to Kate Bush's ethereal music. "Running Up That Hill" was the perfect choice for Max' graveyard scene. So cool this video is remastered in 4K
I remember first hearing this song on Casey Kasem American Top 40 in 1985. It had such a unique sound to it. Sometimes it gave me chills it was so awesome! God I miss the 80’s!
Kate, do you know that when Hounds Of Love was first released I listened to it at last a thousand time? Still, not a week goes by that I don't listen to the entire album (The Ninth Wave is engraved in my soul) or some beauties from it. It’s impossible for me not to dive in such a wonder… it makes me feel so good enjoying the whole world of emotions you share with us with each album. Eternally loyal and grateful❤️🔥
1985 I was 24 & progressin thru to a successful completion a British Army SF course. I listened to Kate' track on a regular basis as I was 'running up those hills' (a metaphor for all the extreme challenges that had to be met and surpassed). It certainly added to all those experiences in a hugely positive manner.
I'm a millenial and I so happy that Stranger Things led me to this masterpiece. Kate Bush is truly a talented artist. I always stunned by the live performance of the older generations, soulful vocals with no special effects and live music.
Having only heard this song for the first time in my life literally on Sunday, July 3, 2022. I cannot stop playing it!! The beat, her voice... Absolutely enthralled with this song & Kate Bush!!
Now you know why us old people love 80s music so much. There's so many more great ones like this from that decade. The sound and music is some of the most amazing I've ever heard.
Kate Bush explained in 1985: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. "It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem." Kate also spoke about the song has been misinterpreted, saying: "I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other's roles, if we could actually be in each other's place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised! "And I think it would lead to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either... you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, 'well, no, why not a deal with God!' You know, because in a way it's so much more powerful the whole idea of asking God to make a deal with you. "You see, for me it is still called 'Deal With God'. that was its title. But we were told that if we kept this title that it would not be played in any of the religious countries, Italy wouldn't play it, France wouldn't play it, and Australia wouldn't play it! Ireland wouldn't play it, and that generally we might get it blacked purely because it had God in the title."
This performance always slays! Imagine when this first aired and the naysayers mouths dropped and the fans rejoiced from the sheer brilliance and beauty of this song. Welcome back then, Kate, and welcome back now!🏹
I remember in 1986, Sounds music paper ran a 100 Greatest Singles, and I think Prince's Kiss was number one, and Running up that hill was the greatest by a white artist. Were there any naysayers?
Im 16, and goddamn her music truly is standalone. Ive never heard such a good artist, pure talent and just stunning sound. (Definitely the music nowadays feels so hollow, so so hollow and empty and just like hungry wolves that are trying to ravish themselves to the top but all the wolves are so equally matched and not even close to how good they could have been. No one will truly ever live up to the legacy of artists like her and just artists around her time. Especially as people only strive to be like the crowd now and never takes risk to truly stand out.)
Very well put ! Im turning 46 and I agree completely with you. I remember this song and the song Cloudbursting with an awesome video in the midst of the 80s, it left an impression and I am now on a binge listening to all her songs I´ve missed, been into other stuff during life. But it´s great to re-discover the magic that is Kate Bush. Its beautiful!!!
I'm glad Kate's music is being appreciated by younger audiences while she's still with us, as it often only happens after the artist is deceased, as in the cases of fellow icons Lennon and Bowie.
I had covid back in June of this year. I slept a lot and oddly enough I listened to this song quite a bit. Im convinced the power of this masterpiece helped me heal.
I'm only a year older than Kate Bush and can't believe 40 years has gone by. Check out Kate's Wuthering heights, and her duet with Peter Gabriel Don't Give Up. Both as good as this in my opinion.
Dear Kate: Thank You for the music. I've been a fan since 1978, when I was 12.. Best music they played on the license-financed monopoly radio in Denmark..
Absolutely sublime. I remember when I first heard this in the 80's. There had been nothing like it before and nothing quite like it since. Utterly brilliant, unique and wonderful, even 37 years later ❤❤❤
I just can't get over this song. I'm 24 and I discovered it a year ago because of the Chromatics cover, then fell in love with the original because of Stranger Things. I can't get enough of it, I really feel it everytime I play it! I feel like I should have been born in the 80s

@@andersd8956 yes but she also hates fame and media attention, it's why she doesn't give interviews or do tours etc she was never willing to play the game and be a big pop star media personality, she's not that type of person. It's not a mystery why she never became a household name outside the UK, talent only goes so far in making you a star. She's an artist who just wants to do her thing no interest in celebrity life and tbh you can't blame her, if you're a sensitive introvert type like her you can understand perfectly why that would be hell. She doesn't do big media events, no personal social media etc she just shows up every decade or so like hey I'm doing a show and it sells out in minutes lol because the peole know they are seeing a true artist not a carbon copy.
Kate was the unsung musical goddess of the 80's and didn't need to rely on cheesy or sleazy tactics to promote her music. She has more class than madonna could ever dream of. This video is very well done and tastefully done in an epic way for the 80’s and still seems current. Her other video of the same song showcases her dancing ability. She’s a total package. Talent, class and beauty.

One incredible song which was my favorite back in 1985 and still today some decades later. Glad to know that a whole new generation of people have taken it to their hearts. Kate Bush is a genious!
Kate uniquely reaches past the material and speaks directly to our souls, and often our better angels. Her offerings are timeless, a gift from God through her!
I mean it's slightly surreal to have all this dug up again and I'm not even sure Kate can relate to it, but it is gratifying for those of us who have been spellbound for OVER 40 FUCKING YEARS.
To call Kate a recluse, would be unfair. But, she did, and still does exist, in a unique and alternate World, imo. One which is filled with a enormous amount of Empathy. It's only fitting that her song should be resurrected, now. As mankind struggles to remain human, in a World that's (rapidly) becoming -----> inhumane. Kate was and still is, AWESOME. And, I still love that song. It's fantastic that you remastered it and released it once, again. Thanks, Kate!
I had a powerful fascination back in 1990 with a girl who was a Kate Bush fan. I received a Kate Bush education at that time, and I never regretted it. I even bought a VHS of Kate Bush TV appearances and videos at a vinyl and record collectibles market. I really, really need to go through my hoard of *stuff* to find it again and show my daughter the magic of Kate Bush.
My daughter loved her mother and father's Kate Bush albums and drew much inspiration from them for her own life. As a result, she took piano lessons and taught herself guitar and ukulele (see Kate on uke doing Elton's 'Rocket Man') and started writing songs. She also went to music theatre school where she learned so much. And thanks to Kate as well as the fabulous Harry Potter books she also excelled in English at school. Though she has a 'real' job (marketing) and fantastic career, making music remains a key part of that life. Hopefully some of the 'magic' our daughter discovered with Kate will rub off on your daughter. It could be a life-changing experience for the (much) better. Cheers!
Really good music always finds a way to touch new audiences , it’s why the stellar artist like Kate and the Beatles will always have their music played by someone somewhere.
She has such an amazing voice! Her voice is gorgeous. This is a true artist and I’m glad her song is getting recognition from Stranger Things. I’m also glad it was used in a BIG scene and not just in the background or for a dance. It was used for a meaningful scene. Which is exactly what this song deserves.
I’m 43 and had never heard this song before that episode of Stranger Things. Funny thing-my 17 yr old had it on her playlist prior to Stranger Things. So now I’m making her play songs for me to see what else I’ve been missing out on.
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. I have loved Kate from the very beginning, saw her live in 2014 and I’m hoping this recent excitement may entice her back for another live performance or two?!!!🤞🤞🤞
I’m 23 and been into this era of music for a few years now, not just Kate Bush, but Depeche Mode, Talk Talk, OMD, Human League, Heaven 17, Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre, Howard Jones, Pulp, The Lightning Seeds, The Christians, Art of Noise, Soft Cell, Midge Ure, Ultravox, New Order, Nik Kershaw, Yazoo, Fleetwood Mac, The Smiths, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Simple Minds, Tears for Fears, Prefab Sprout, I’ve been absorbing all the new wave, post punk, electronic, art rock and pop I can from this time, and love it all. It makes me so happy to see others following suit all thanks to Stranger Things. She deserves it in droves for her genius!
@@michaelmaterne I adore Just Like Heaven but that’s it for The Cure. By the list above I’m more of an electronic guy, and part of my love for Just Like Heaven stems from feeling like it’s Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart - Happy Ending. 😂 Massive respect for Robert Smith as a songwriter and musician, but none of their other tracks that I’ve listened to quite grab me as much as I want to.

Suspended in Gaffa was the song from that album for me. Ah, the 80s: being a naive young American living in London. Seems a bit like a dream.
whoa that's awesome!!

The reason the song is resonating so well with todays generation via stranger things is simple, it’s an original song sung by a superb artist that never sounded like anything else in 85 and that also applies in 2022. People just recognise brilliance☺️
Well said 100% agree 😃
I don't know, man. I don't think "todays (sic) generation" really gives a shit about originality or "brilliance". Look at the garbage that's produced and consumed now. It's popular because it's on a show.
True!❤️❤️😇 I'm falling a sleep with this song and wake up with it!
A simple way to put it... a simple big truth.
I wish Laura Branigan's hits would also be featured. I firmly believe she was underrated.
@@nkosinathindlovu3059 Yes, yes , yes !!!!!

They picked the perfect song to re-discover. This is the epitome of timeless. I can't think of a decade that it wouldn't fit in 🔥
I agree,a true classic,I'm 50 in March,I was playing this at 16,had my own disco...I still remember all the greats...
She used to sing live on top
Of the pops though
From a current teenager: I've been listening to her for years with people my age not knowing who she is when I mentioned her, so I'm SO happy that more kids my age are finally listening to and admiring this goddess!
LITERALLY SAME
24 years here, but same.
You’re a very musically intelligent teenager. I first found her music as a teenager, but that was almost 30 years ago.
21 years here, but same 🥺💖
Is she like the lorde of that era?
I've loved Kate Bush since I was 29, and now I'm 25. Thanks! Kate Bush!
You aged backwards?
So beautifully said. I so often gift people, strangers, so needful of the sensual word. Those grand fat deep words in chaos, brilliant comes that light, 💋of love.
Only getting more amazing as the years go by, Kate will never be equalled since the era of the singer-songwriter is effectively over. Besides, there was no man before her

I just LOVE this song! Shes so skilled and her voice is just beautiful just wonderful!! !!! 😊
The emotion she conveys with her face and body when performing this song, always brings me chills
The same for me ! From the very 1st sentence "it doesn't Hurt me"
Yes, but too bad it’s a lip sync :/
I thought the same...nothing happy here...raw emotion
Ikr. like all her vids back then.
Imagine releasing a song when you're 27 years old and it reaches number 1 when you're 63 years old
Eh, this already reached very close to the top of the charts when it was released and Kate Bush has had other hits that reached no 1. back in the 80s.
I bet the background musicians are pleasantly surprised too. Early retirement check. 😆😌😏
I first heard this song sung by a group called Placebo. My middle son ended his life 12.24.08...this song was on his Playlist (MP3 Player) along with a lot of Placebo, I was hooked. I love the drums in this music
I was a teenager in the 80's and just remember Kate Bush as being pretty weird. There was so much good music back then that I didn't really take much notice of her's. Now, I listen to her songs and am amazed how good they really are. She was probably way ahead of her time and now we are just catching up.
My Mum, who was in her 20’s in the 1980’s, said the same thing about her. She doesn’t really like her. But I actually don’t mind this song.
Are you American? I am curious if Americans thought she was weird. I am American and fell in love with Running up that HIll. There was no turning back after hearing that song. Her music was too advanced for most Americans, it took our country 37 years to catch up to where Kate was 37 years ago.
That’s well said. Plus her music is timeless. It moves you the same way a beautiful painting or a sunset would.
You're right, I also knew Kate Bush as a singer of a weird song back then.. but now I feel she was so brilliant that day and was a head of her time..
That's the way it always is.
Congratulations Kate! “Running Up That Hill” claims a second week at Number 1 on UK Singles Chart!
Three weeks!!!!
Kate is so beautiful, her voice is magic. I love her.
Kate never went away ! Every old is new again. Loved Kate when I first saw her on countdown all those years ago like many of my generation ?
LOL.
Same age as you, mate! Totally agree.
I'm 69 and I love it!
I'm 52... loved Kate from Wuthering Heights and The Man with the Child in His Eyes (my all time favourite - memories of hearing it on the radio at th beach in '78).

TIMELESS TALENT!
THE LEGENDARY KATE BUSH
Saw Kate Bush on tv for the first time on Saturday Night Live in 1978. Instantly became a fan!
You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."
Kate also spoke about the song has been misinterpreted, saying: "I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman.

No one will truly ever live up to the legacy of artists like her and just artists around her time.
Especially as people only strive to be like the crowd now and never takes risk to truly stand out.)

You couldn't have said it any better!
Cheers!
