- Kolkata's quaint hand pulled rickshaws may not be around much longer.
Naresh Yadav has operated a hand-pulled rickshaw in Kolkata for 45 years. Ever since he came to the city following his uncle's footsteps, it's all he's ever known how to do. Starting his day at 6am, Naresh plies the bylanes of Kolkata, hoping to pick up a fare. When he started doing this for a living, the fare used to be 30 paise. Today, it's Rs. 20. Saving what he can, he sends home a meagre Rs. 2000-5000 a month to his family back in Bihar.
Rain or shine, Naresh will be out on the street, plying a dying trade. With the passing of the Calcutta Hackney-Carriage (Amendment) Bill, 2006, hand pulled rickshaws were banned in Kolkata. However, a High court order decreed a stay on the legislation. How much longer can this arrangement last without new licenses being issued for rickshaw pullers?

It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. This is a man full of spirit, and not a single bitter bone in his body. Much respect to him, and for what it's worth, if he's been doing this for 45 years, he must be around 65 years old, so he's a lot healthier than men that age working in offices

Make these rickshaws available in first world countries, market them as "fitness equipment".
People say Calcutta/Kolkata as “City of Joy”. I truely feel its an apt name for that city! I stayed there just for a month though!!
Whenever I visit North Kolkata I always gave a smile to these kind humans :) ( this amazing vehicle is only available there) . Once during Durga Puja I captured a picture of one of them near Ahiritola , the man literally cried :) ❤️. This is a very tough job. Very much . But when I see them appreciating their life I can see my life from a different view point. And please if you ever ride these rickshaws don't forget to give them some extra tip :)

Why not 101 generate a donationlink for these rikshawwallas. Maybe we would be able to give a new rickshaw every month to 1 person. The sitting rickshaws that we generally see. This will help atleast some of them. I would also contribute.

if these rickshaws are not allowed on roads due to traffic rules/law/acts.....etc. then, Local govt./community/welfare org./...etc can take an initiative to pull these rickshaws in specific areas like public parks/ museum / golf / beach roads . I'm sure this will benefit them. request you guyz to take this issue and try with any celebrity / politician / local body...etc. at least with radio/FM -- all India radio....radio mirchi......etc.

Hand-pulled rickshaws were banned in Tamil Nadu in the early 70s by the then Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi of the DMK. The rickshaw pullers were given free cycle rickshaws to continue their livelihoods with dignity and respect.
This is the fundamental difference between the Dravidian movement and the so-called Indian communist movement.
Now, in TN, cycle rickshaws too can hardly be seen. They have been replaced by autorickshaws.

Anyone who read ''Black Beauty'' by Anna Sewell will have empathy for any horse who pulls overly heavy loads... but for Humans to pull..it seems very hard way of earning a living.. running on hard roads while pulling will indeed put strain on the knees, hips and arms.
Expect the men are very fit though...fitter than many office workers.
It is a very physically demanding job, but if it is all the men are able to do, too earn a living, it seems unfair to stop them...how else will they live?

If you could please come up with a story on this ironic topic : how the educated person is made a president( read that : puppet) and the goons are at helm of decision making organisations i.e. the prime minister. It probably happens only in India.

Why 7 dislikes to this video and why govt give false hope of rs 2 lakhs if they dont have the courage to give it to them.
For votes, they can give subsidy of millions of dollars to the farmers which may also falls in wrong hands.They do anything for votes, like illegal immigration ,caste reservation but not for these people.I understand one problem is traffic jam with this but there should be an alternative instead of banning completely.

Very sad. India is always in war with neighbors but can't give Rs 2 lac loan to its rickshaw pulling citizens. I don't blame the indians, but the politicians who are busy in making money and explite other issues.

The other side of story is that they earn more than RS 500 per day n they charge not less than RS 25 even less than 100 meters distance, work is hard but they don't want to go for other options

This guy is made of substance. However I don't understand why he is stuck to his rickshaw. I get it that he wants the government to compensate him with 2 lacs as promised then he would leave it, but he can easily find other jobs which can pay him quite well instead of working like hell until his knees hurt. How about selling food? I'm already salivating looking at that fantastic aaloo bhujiya and roti he cooked and ate.

Don't let this delude you. In Western countries, the governments and corporations also exploit poor people and low income people, often having power over peoples personal lives. Search for nanny state and big government. Corruption is everywhere.
