  • You may have seen my video from about a month ago when i drove the MAN TGL 10.180 the small rigid truck. This was for your small deliveries around town a handy size truck for those awkward delivery locations. Well this time around we are in a completely different articulated truck, the MAN TGX 18.480, this particular truck is ten year's old and has covered over 500,000 miles. With it's straight six cylinder diesel engine delivering 480hp and 2,300 Nm of torque, so lets take it for a test drive and see how it performs.

    Down good old memory lane again for me Stavros 2004-5 I was using the TGX XXL mid lift 480 on night trunks, as well as Mercedes Actros and a good little workhorse DAF 75CF. Thank you once more for a lovely truck video. 2 down 1 more to go for me Mercedes Actros, MAN and DAF XF...

    Thanks for the vid Stav , I'm a big fan of these trucks, I'm currently on my 2nd TGX 26,480 having previously had the earlier F series, then the TGA & the ERF ECT derivatives. Also had a few Volvo's & Scanias along the way including a couple of V8 580's. The scania is a good truck but for living in the MAN wins every time, better bunks & seats in the MAN. My boss once asked me if I wanted a new R440 or a 2nd hand TGX480 , I opted for the TGX & have had less trouble with them than the two scanias that also turned up, a few issues with the ad-blu on the first one but compared to failed diff's , 3gearboxes ,an engine rebuild , numerous fuel pump failures & continuous turbo problems on the scanias coupled with the diabolical fuel consumptions it looks like I made the right choice with the MAN ! We also do a fair bit of off road work & have never had any issues with the auto boxes. Is there a downside ? Yes. Unfortunately the franchised MAN dealer backup isn't quite up there with Scania but we use an independent dealer who's great, just a shame he's not nationwide else we'd be well sorted !

    I currently have a 2016 MAN TGX 480 with the 16 speed box. You're right, it's the best manual box on the market. However, MAN have now dropped this 'box as an option, leaving only AS tronic, which I loathe, and I think this is a mistake. The N/S blind spot is horrendous , but a great truck in my eyes, comfortable and well equipped, especially in the XXL guise with leather. A completely new MAN is coming in 2020. Should be interesting.

    Hi Stavros. The lever rearward of what you call the one touch lever is what controls the level of seat suspension firmness. I recently drove a new TGS for a few days and it took a while to get it right. When fully soft it felt like it was riding on flubber, which is where you had it set. Made for a few laughs though.
    Anyway, another excellent review, thank you.

    Thanks for the vid Stavros. I think the MAN shows its age a bit, but it’s probably earns its owner good money. 10000€ cheaper than the equivalent Scalia in 2008, as you say that’s a lot of diesel. How many repairs and cost of downtime against the Scania though. Usually cheaper to buy means that you will pay in a different way. For me I would rather pay more for a Scania, Volvo or DAF and have less downtime, that way at least you keep customers happy. It would be nice if you could do a back to back comparison on these older trucks to see which has stood the test of time best and perhaps a quick summary of service bills and breakdowns, one against the other. Could be interesting. Take care matey👍🏻👍🏻🚚🚚

    Like you said Stavros969 it is what it is, a working truck not a truck fest Scania, I love Scania but if I was spending my money Id get a MAN or DAF, firstly the fuel saved on purchase price comparing a MAN to a Scania, secondaly Maintenance costs on a Scania or Volvo would be higher then a DAF or MAN. Takes alot my road time for a Scania to earn its keep from purchase day.

    • @ram89572
      @ram89572 Před 4 lety +2

      Meanwhile the majority of truck drivers in the US float the gears every day and only use the clutch to start and stop without having a comfort switch.

    • @stuntvist
      @stuntvist Před 4 měsíci

      @@ram89572 US trucks still don't have synchronized manuals though. You can float gears just as well (better in some cases) in a synchronized box but you'll destroy the syncros given enough time if you do. Syncros don't really wear unless you put force on them and if you shift without using the clutch that's exactly what you're doing. I still find it kind of pointless though since you lose control over how the clutch is released between shifts so it could end up being a bit jerky, it's not like the button rev matches up and downshifts perfectly every single time. If your ergonomics aren't done terribly pressing the clutch takes 0 effort and causes no discomfort anyway. Just sounds like an excuse to use an ECA to fix bad ergonomics lol. Only vehicle I've driven where pressing the clutch was annoying to me was a Ford Focus. Terrible pedalbox all round (couldn't heel toe at all because the throttle pedal was a mile deeper in the pedalbox than everything else and the brakes were so overboosted they felt worse than air brakes) and no matter what you did, you could not get yourself in a position where your knee wouldn't be weirdly strained when you pressed the clutch in. Probably other vehicles out there with similar problems but still doesn't excuse the lack of time spent on driver ergonomics.
      Also I'm pretty sure MAN were completely fine with you using the switch for every shift after getting going, dunno if there was some box/model specific limitations to that or something related to engine output that would put too much of a beating on the box if you used that in low range. It's still a step up from floating gears though since you don't have to be perfect with it, the syncros still work when you use the clutch button instead of the clutch pedal.

    Thanks for the nice detailed explaination .could you tell me when to use the split in gears and when to use the next gear or change to the high range?
    I am just confused with the order of gears in trucks unlike passenger cars, we have 1-2-3-4-5 and sometimes 6 and you chabge one by one and we don't skip gears but I think it is difference here. Excuse me for making it too long question
    Thanks in advance 😊

      Think of this one as two 4 speed shift patterns. 1-4, back into the 1st position for 5th, and all the way through to 8th, but the kicker is that all of these gears can split low and high. So if you were heavy you could start out in 1L, 1H, 2L, 2H, 3L, 3H, etc.

    I've driven many off these on agency and they are by FAR the most problematic truck. They are the ONLY truck in my 10 years temp driving, which have caused me issues. They have a common ignition problem, where a little cable comes lose or wears out, causing no ignition! Happened to me, 3 times, 3 separate trucks, years apart! Steering wheel is too big. The LACK OF CUP HOLDERS is an absolute travesty! 21st century, £100k vehicles, put a decent cup holder to hold my energy drink ffs!
    Overall quality of the average MAN truck I come across is terrible.
