Why Dislike This Truck? Renault Premium - Let's Talk About It! - Stavros969

  • Some of you will remember my test-drive video of the Renault Premium truck with it's 460hp Volvo engine and gearbox. I asked you guy's to send in your comments about what you thought of it. Some of you really don't like this truck, but is it as bad as some people think or has it actually been just a very good value truck.
    Let's have a chat about it and go down through all the issues.
    I also have a quick look at the new Jaguar I-Pace the all electric SUV that will take the fight to Tesla. It certainly has the looks and performance that will generate a lot of sales for Jaguar. With 400PS or 394bhp and nearly 700Nm of torque, and a 0-100Km/h in just 4.8 seconds, this is one fast SUV. With a fully charged battery Jaguar claims a range of 300 miles. Would love to take one for a test-drive...
    Thanks for watching CZcams 'Stavros969'

    I think most people overlook the fact that the Renaults are basically just simplified and cheapened versions of the Volvo trucks, hence the cheap plastic design and problematic rattling or cracking that occurs. You get what you pay for.

    i disagree with most of this. i work as a hgv mechanic for renault trucks. however i dont think they are the best truck and love a v8 scania.. but having worked on every truck in the business including american stuff i can safely say that Renaults arnt that bad. Some of what you say is true like the cab airbags and locking yourself out. However some of this damage you talk about is driver abuse (wing, step, and driver who cant use a gear selector on a stalk). and other things are not as common as you claim the starter motor. i have come across this problem however it is nothing to do with Renault.. its across the board.. you will go out to jump starts and the exciter wire is corrode this is not a Renault specific problem nore is it more common on a Renault. The whole point about the auto box being left in gear. that shouldn't be in this video either. you can do that with most of the auto boxes. and if its a merc then it has to go back to a dealer . unlike a renault. or anything else for that matter that u just put air in and disengage drive. some mercs have to go to the dealer to be reset. Im not saying they are the best and i can understand why a driver may not like them but this video is full of points that arnt the trucks fault.. and that is really annoying as the truck is not as unreliable as you make out. listening to a driver who cant use a gear selector is not the best way to do research. As an ending point if you want to talk about reliability i would be looking more towards MAN than i would Renault or Iveco

    Had 2 weeks tramping around UK in one of theses in the late 2000s and then another 2 weeks doing the same contract in the Mercedes axor.
    I would say the Renault had a little more space but would of chose the merc over it any day ..... mainly because it was just built better and didn't bloody rattle like the Renault!

    Eh, for what you pay for them these Renaults are great bits of kit, nice light steering, I've never driven one that has developed much slop, gearbox is solid, an i shift underneath, but I think the software that the French put in it is better than volvos, none of that riding the clutch feeling you get with an FM, the 460 is solid. Maintaining them nowadays is proving to be dirt cheap as Renault maintain a cheap supply of parts.
    I agree with tramping, cross cabin mobility is a pain, personally I like the driving position, feels nice and cozy.

    Back in the lay nineties I was working for TNT and we went to the Driver of the year completion at MIRA. It was a big employee family work day thing and one of the trucks they had was a Premium minus the passenger seat but it had this sort of chez lounge type of thing which meant you could sit up on your bunk on a SOFA while you were relaxing, waiting to be tipped at so many NDCs I could mention. It was a good day weather was great and we got the use of the test track with several different trucks to drive.

      Toom my licenses in a manual Volvo FH 440 rigid from 2007, with a 3-axle full trailer hooked behind it. I really like Volvo but Scania V8s are to die for. Though, older Scania trucks seem to get problems with the clutch. Most noticeable when reversing and you're trying to go slow but the entire truck just starts jumping instead.

    Used to have one. No electrical, engine or gearbox problems but had a lot of other problems. Springs and u bolts broke a lot, leaky diesel and coolant tanks. New ones are really bad from what I've seen and heard from owners. As soon as the renault badge goes on it infects the rest of the truck but the volvos they share parts and chassis with are dodgy to.

    I did see the launch of the new Jaguar, must say I was impressed with the performance, loved the Red and Blues colours. You never know Stavros a Jaguar may silently come your way soon, sir.
    I still bear the scars on my shins, from my 2003 Renault night trunking (days), think Renault had there own engine and gear shift gearbox and one other truck the 1989-90 days in the DAF ATI 2800 steps i was forever slipping down them.
    Not driven trucks full time since 2009 now given up part time agency work due to ill health not doing as the doctors told me to do and not to over the last 30+ years, like we do.
    Now 58 years young the pressure on the drivers is way to much and then to dissed (bashed) by an Scottish female MP about the amount trucks stuck in the snow, which (who) should of not been there "Driver you work... or theres the door...!" from bosses, I had the misfortune to have worked for a boss like this. Also a huge lack of safe parking and amenities for drivers is so hurtful and the industry is not like this, even just a few years back was better. Keys now hung up.

    I drive year model 2013 renault premium.
    There are now over 980,000 more kilometers.
    In many cases you have the right space is low and especially in the winter the cabin is really cold when the temperature goes below -20 degrees Celsius.
    My self is over 190cm long and can not stand upright in any car interior except by opening the sunroof.
    The cost of the renault has been inexpensive but it does not compensate for the fact that the goods have to be kept in bags because there is not enough storage space.
    Awkward because I live weeks in my truck.
    Even in Scania's standard model, there is more room to be, move and live than Renault's high cabin.

      When companies look at the cost saving they will jump big time - the only issue they have is the weight vs load weight, but USA load and shapes are totally different to anywhere else, esp when the winter snow and ice melts and truckloads can go down to below 10,000kg due to road flexing etc in certain states but if it works out no heavier than current trucks (all the figures I read about are the USA) they be saving $$$$$$$$$. The only company I know of that has ordered a Telsa Truck in Europe is in Norway and 51%+ of all new car sales there are plugins - also oil not going to round forever so new drivetrains coming - if you read the EU tec documents connected to the new Euro7 and Euro8 engines, Euro7 meant to be a hybrid drivetrain with the Euro8 is looking like all EV drivetrain

    Had Renault for past 4 years same faults as yours on tipper work average about 300 miles per day biggest fault for tipper tractor is traction ,no where near my previous Axor but premium heater good ,mirrors ok bit difficult to get out of drivers seat to bunk. Would recommend new stater motor strong connections make sure well water proofed

      The engine is from Volvo, but the gearbox is from ZF, is not a Volvo Gearbox...

    • @hugohalm4615
      @hugohalm4615 Před 6 lety

      The engine is a conception of Renault but with injection system of a volvo, and the gearbox is an optidriver which a volvo gearbox.
      if it was a manual, it would be a ZF

    The premium is a good all rounder work horse, I think they're great to drive, but can feel cramped. And of course they're not the most robust vehicle, but on the other hand those plastic parts are removed and replaced very quickly.. So not the end of the world when parts get cracked.... I like them..

  • @EdgyNumber1
    @EdgyNumber1 Před 6 lety

    I drove mine for driving test. Not a comfortable truck for someone over 6 foot. Footwell too small for my big feet.
    Easy to drive, I do like the position of the forward mirror. Retarder is good...
    Not a tramping truck but bearable for regional/local stuff.
