I came here to pay homage to Cliffs of Dover, in honor of a lady's father. The lady told a story on Reddit, of how her rather stoic dad jammed out to this song and told her that this was the best music guitar performance ever. According to her, the dad died not long after, and this song stuck to her mind for years, until she was able to find it on CZcams. Respect to her dad, and this wonderful guitarist. It is indeed the best guitar performance I've listened to in a while.

It's the actual clean notes that get you. No Tapping to get additional note. Eric actually picks them. Just incredible ❤️
nothing wrong with tapping but I agree it's a super-special performance. It's more talent and taste than a question whether a given note is picked, pull-of, hammer-on, or tap or harmonic.

@@JustGeorge770 Neither way of playing is wrong it depends on the musical context. As a performer you want to engage your audiences. I play exclusively folk which is really easy almost muscle memory strumming. It's honestly not good to stare at your neck as a performer is situations like that.
An absolute master class of a performance from the greatest, Eric Johnson.
During the time when my mother was nearing the end of her life due to an extremely aggressive virus, compounded by her immunocompromised state, her chances of survival were a mere 5%... Throughout the ordeal, spanning around 2 months, while she lay unconscious in a medically induced coma, I found solace in listening to a particular song every single day. Strangely, this song wasn't overtly sad; rather, it infused me with a sense of hope, a belief that she could triumph over the virus. And miraculously, she did.

Melodic and shredding aren't exclusive tho. Melodic is the sound, shredding is play style / technique.
There’s a lot of shredding that is not super melodic. I think that’s what they are referring to. Guthrie Govan is another great example of both

Him and that guitar absolutely loved each other. This is honestly the best I’ve ever heard him play. I’m not gonna lie, his Fender signature guitar is magnificent, and I’m glad he’s given others a means to sound anything like him, but they don’t sound exactly like the real Strat Virginia. When you form such a deep connection with your instrument, it becomes an extension of you completely, not just a piece of wire and wood. You empower it with an identity as the player, and your own personalities exfoliate into the music you make and contribute to. I’ve never seen this relationship with most other guitarists and guitars in the same way that it was present between Eric and Virginia.

My LP & 335 are set up perfectly and they can’t hold tune nearly as much as my strats and tele.
If it’s set up right and has good quality specs then strats are great for tuning, I take mine everywhere and it’s gets banged about and even when I go nuts on he trem, I barely ever have to tune it

Every person I've ever heard talk about meeting him has said the same thing. It's tough in this day and age to not have a single bad story about someone this famous. He and Keannu stand above the rest of us (but have the humility to never remind us).

I am SOOOO thankful I got to meet Eric on Satriani's Super Colossal tour and chat with him outside the venue for a few minutes. He signed my Ibanez RT650 and I still have it today along with EVH, DLR, Vai, Petrucci, and Guthrie Govan auto's. Pics of all who signed as they signed it. I've been offered so much money for that guitar and I will NEVER sell it. It'll be handed down to my children. Eric wasn't "on" the night I saw him (maybe an age thing)? Idk, but regardless.. this guy is the KING of tone and it was an absolute pleasure to chat with him and shake hands.

So glad someone else understands how amazing it really is to see someone play with his accuracy. Especially for playing 12 notes per second. Anyone can play fast. But to play fast with perfect accuracy is a rare gift!
In my opinion, Eric Johnson, Govan, and Malmsteen are by far the most accurate players of the instrument.

Well jason becker was a thing before 1990 and hes been melting peoples faces off with his guitar skills since he was a child i love this song and eric johnson but if you like this you should listen to jason beckers perpetual burn album thats the absolute apex of guitar playing

The tone is in the hands. (And the amp and cabinet, the guitar does almost nothing to the tone)
@@damiangentile27 I disagree. A Strat has a different tone than a Telecaster, as do any number of Gibsons. Effects pedals can also play a role, but I don’t see them in this performance.
This is really one of the greatest live electric guitar performances ever. To play something this long, this technical, and to nail it like this is otherworldly.

This particular intro, IMO, is : 10th grade, a Friday morning, you've just sat up ALL night, by yourself, listening to music, watching tv, unable to sleep, because you just did NOT want to , and for some reason, decided to see what NOT sleeping would be like. Oh, yeah, getting out of bed is HARD, you want to go to sleep, but now you HAVE to go to school. So tired, but so exhilerated. It's a first time in a lifetime of experiences that YOU controlled, that you "went beyond" what you had been used to. Such, such is life. Keep going. We can sleep when it's time. It's worth it.
I’m from San Antonio, Texas and back in the 80’s and every April San Antonio would have a thing called La Semana Alegre. It was a whole 2 weeks of concerts with some of the most popular bands playing. Every night it was a different band and I loved it because it was just one big party with the best bands in town and it lasted for 2 weeks. I remember Legs Diamond was playing one night and the opening act was some guy I or anyone had ever heard of. They said his name was Eric Johnson and he was from Austin wich is like an hour away from San Antonio. We were not interested in this dude. We wanted him to hurry up and play and leave because everyone there was there to watch Legs Diamond. When Eric Johnson came out and started playing everyone’s jaw hit the ground. We could not believe what we were hearing. It was freaking amazing. The next day just about everyone was at the record store buying his album including me
Somehow I can't imagine a performance like that WITHOUT that jacket.
