    A few products from this review were sent to me by Banggood for testing. This does not mean that I do get all my products. I review also a lot of products I bought myself. I started these reviews because from my experience not every tool from China was worth buying. So I wanted to make in-depth reviews to show you which products you should consider and which product you better leave alone. The fact that Banggood sent me products occasionally does not change the way I make my reviews.
    I still give in-depth reviews and give you my honest opinion! On this, you can count on! I have a good experience with Banggood.com and they have a lot of woodworking tools nicely organized on their site.

      @HookedonWood  Před 3 lety

      I have a lot of "so-called" stainless steel items and almost all work with a magnet. In the end, mostly it is a certain alloy. But I also saw a commend from someone who said, that Stainless steel 300 is non-magnetic, but 400 is? But I am not an expert. My INCRA rulers write stainless steel on their rulers and they are also magnetic.

      @@HookedonWood Another great video - thanks for doing these. I too keep buying more stuff!! :-) On the comment about magnets and stainless steel - stainless Steel can be either magnetic or non-magnetic - it simply depends on the alloy mix. There are basically two main types - austenitic and ferritic. Austenitic is (generally) not magnetic, ferritic is (generally) magnetic. It depends on the atomic arrangement of the atoms and this is usually influenced by the concentration of elements like nickel, manganese, chromium, molybdenum and silicon in the alloy. I can no longer remember the number assignments, but many Stainless Steels are magnetic and that's cool - and in this case very useful :-)

    If I was going to recommend one ruler/square to rule them all (pun absolutely intended... 😄), it would be a classic Starrett type combination square.
    Yes, good ones (Brown and Sharpe, Mitutoyo, Starrett etc) are not an inexpensive option; but they are extremely versatile for the money. You can also buy good used combination squares from these makers and a good reference square to check them against for not huge amounts of money.

    I love your videos!! My hardest part with these tools is that they are metric. Don't get me wrong in schooling I took a heavy course load of math and even more science were metric was used tons so I am very familiar with the system. The problem is I was raised in the US and on the imperial system, as such all of my woodworking is pretty much done in imperial. It's hard as many of our standard tools are set with imperial rulers, lumber sold in imperial... and to be honest although I understand both systems I can't switch between them seemlessly. Would love to order some of these things just makes me nervous.

    Hey Dennis, good video, and nice to hear you took the tip on the naming of the systems to heart, it's so annoying that both exist, so annoying to switch from one to another.. luckily angles are (usually) the same.. 360 all the way round.. though I heard of systems where 400 is all the way round.. but keep up the good work, love it :)

    Hi Dennis. I have the small 15cm ruler too but not from Bang good. My one is an original Japanese JGA one with very high online reviews. It’s fantastic with a very clear scale. It was a bargain at only €5. Thanks for the tip with the small magnet. I’ve just clicked a small magnet on it now. Excellent! Another great vid. All the best. 👍🏼🪚🔨

      Just to add to the above. This 15cm ruler has a nice lip at one end to make it easier to pick up. It has a plastic sleeve which is durable enough to keep it in which will keep it clean and it has a hanging hole at one end. Lots of features for a simple ruler! I use it all the time. My only criticism is that it could be thicker steel. It’s only 0.5mm thick.

    Hey Dennis, a suggestion for a future review: clamps. As a woodworker, you never have enough clamps. As a beginning woodworker, since you need to buy enough clamps to get you started, buying name brand clamps can be quite expensive. Some of those F-clamps look quite attractive. I have also seen some parallel clamps, but they seem flimsy at first glance. Thank you for considering this.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 3 lety +1

      @HookedonWood  Před 3 lety

      Hi Michael,
      Yes the BCT is a very nice square. It is perfect in every way. It is adjustable, and I think you have to check it sometimes. But I like the fact that it is adjustable. I like it size, because It could fit in my apron. And of course it is very nicely made. I think the woodpeckers is even of higher quality, but that the woodpeckers square I have, is really overbuild. It does not adds something extra to it only because it is very high quality, (which is worth something) So, the weight and the size of the BCT is perfect and the price is a bit better than the woodpeckers tools.

    Can't wait to see the China Tools on Squares. I have purchased a couple of try squares and what delivered from Bangood did NOT match the precision of the website's description. I'm seeking a highly accurate engineering try square in 90 degree in a small (approximately 3")and a Larger 6" or more 90 degree. These would typically stay boxed, and only come out for confirming my combination squares and rechecking squares or machines after disassembly or cleaning.

      @HookedonWood  Před 3 lety

      Hi Arthur,
      Good question. I think the Incra is really a good fence and make a lot of work much easier. In fact I do not think I would do some things that with the incra fence is a piece of cake.
      Sometimes I see some fences on Banggood, but they all ask to build a workbench for it. So, not that easy to implement.
      But I am sure, that if I find some universal on Banggood, I will make a review about it. But I think Incra will stay a class of its own.

    Dennis, Love your work and your attention to detail! The precision of your work and the way you think through everything and double check the accuracy is awesome!
    I’m looking at replacing my very old Delta table saw with a new upgraded cabinet saw. My choices have been a SawStop or a Laguna Fusion. But I noticed your saw was a Harvey (a brand I’d never heard of before, but discovered has been around for a long time). What was the reason you decided to purchase a Harvey rather than a SawStop? It’s a beautiful table saw, especially with the TiN coated tables and comes with an awesome fence and dust retrieval system and I’m certainly leaning toward the Harvey table saw now. Would love to know your reasoning for your choice and why you also said if you bought it again you’d likely not get the TiN coating.
    Finally, I noticed an Incra TS-LS table saw fence. But you don’t appear to use it with your table saw but use the one that came with the Harvey. Isn’t it significantly more accurate?
    Keep up the excellent work. I love the videos and I’ve learned a ton from how you build your items, the tools you use (China Tools is great), as well as the meticulous way you do everything so that it not only fits perfectly, but also so that it is aesthetically pleasing as well. You have a beautiful workshop!

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 3 lety

      Hi Chris, I would definitely have bought the SawStop, but this one is not for sale in Europe. In fact I am pretty sure the Sawstop machines are made by Harvey. Harvey is OEM for almost 40 brands. Last year they trying to sell more under their own label in the US. In The Netherlands, they are sold already a few years under their own name. So, that is the reason. unfortunately they do not have the safety feature like SawStop. The reason I told I think I would not buy the TiN coated surface again is because it is very thin and because of that cost too much money. It looks great, and as long as it is on it, it gives a good protection, but they definitely put it on too thin.
      About the Incra Fence. I keep my table saw fence from Incra to implement when that was possible. If I have my new workshop, I will put it on. But on this moment, it is not possible. That said. I have to say that I am satisfied with my digital read out meter. And I plan to buy a new table saw in my new workshop, so I probably will end up selling this saw and Incra fence. I will go for a panel saw.

    • @christhompson6937
      @christhompson6937 Před 3 lety

      @@HookedonWood Dennis, I'd like to ask you a couple follow up questions.
      1) Why are you choosing to get a new table saw?
      2) You mentioned that the TiN coating was thin - is it peeling or getting damaged? I live where humidity is ruining a number of my tools and that seems like worth the additional costs...thoughts?
      3) You said you would have bought a SawStop if it was available in Europe...why? Because of the safety feature or because it's better built? I’ve been reading users sawing the Harvey was damaged on arrival or the table was warped...so have some concerns over quality.
      4) However, the Harvey is a 2hp motor vs a 1.75 with the SawStop, comes with an awesome Miter Square, and Dust collection and is about $2,000 cheaper to get roughly the same saw...but are they. Would love your insight on this.

      I never had any problem with the 1400 watt version. If you use it in a router table, you also can go for the bigger one, but I did not find any problems. When you use it as a handheld router, I think the bigger one, becomes too heavy.

    It is very nice being that accurate but in woodwork, we rarely get down to 1/10 of a degree never mind 1/100 of a degree. Wood can contract over time so that an accurate square one day will be inaccurate the next day.

    I have a damaged item that arrived, I sent proof but they are making things difficult to get a replacement. Other items that came from China direct were good (packing really well), this item came from the EU - packing wad really bad, this caused the issue. It seems to me if the product is from the EU. So I do not know if the EU guys are just not bothered and so do not order items that come in from the EU only China or banggood are just bad at replacing damaged items , so BEWARE! • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, Good question. I have my channel for a good 1.5 year now. I started this project with an open mind. See where it leads me to and what will be the identity of my channel. I will make a serie about my new workshop in the near future. I need all kind of new workbenches and I have a lot of great ideas to implement in this. I think this will be interesting.
      Second is reviews. On this moment I have the China Tools series. I am happy with that because they are my most viewed and rewarded videos and It leads that also well known brand are contacting me on the moment for reviews. And I like to do reviews and dig deep in questions and subjects about dust extraction, glue etc. So, I think that will be my three points. Reviews, Shop improvement and woodworking topics. I do not add anything already existing on CZcams when it comes to building videos. You have to understand that when you make a project without filming it, and with filming it are two complete different things. When I make something, I want to be a woodworker. Focussing on the project and doing this in a relaxed and safe manner. I do not want to be a producer, thinking about shots ad different angles, setup lightning, repeat cuts for different shots and add 12 hours of editing to it to make a video about it.
      I upload regularly short clips of projects on my instagram page. So, CZcams is a great place, with lots of content where you can choose from. If I do not make build videos there are tons of others that do, and also do it better! And for shop improvement and reviews (on this moment still China Tools) I hope I add something extra to these subjects.

    • @truth-ox3wz
      @truth-ox3wz Před 3 lety

      @@HookedonWood Thanks for the response. I know how much goes into filming, editing, ect. as I use to make YT...(10yrs ago) about a 100 of them on building/modding high end Gaming PC's. I really like you and your channel, just was getting tired of the reviews.
      But if that is working for you, then that's great. But don't feel that you wouldn't add anything to a build video because many others have posted similar videos. I can watch 100 of video's on "How to make a cabinet" (which I have) and I learn something new or see something that I didn't in other videos.
      Anyway, I wish you nothing but the best. BTW, I don't have an Instagram acct. Did you know you could do CZcams "Shorts" now on CZcams.....just a though. Maybe I will check out Instagram.
