Each journal was a gem and I loved seeing actual writing and photos in them. Great to be reminded that they're to be used!
Wow … you have such beautiful collections of journals!! Who said a junk journal has to be something one can write on?? The small journals about the pig, rabbit are just adorable and gives me an idea of what I can do as I get immersed further into the “Junk Journal World”.😂😂. There’s no going back … I’m addicted!!😮😮😮😮 Thank you for your inspiring video Tina!❤❤❤❤
So glad that you like it!
That was really interesting and thank you for showing your various journals. I'm a 73 year old crafter and I've been enjoying learning papercrafting for a few years... I just started making my own journals (not junk) a year or so ago. I have made a variety of journals in several styles, including one that's a pretty thick folio.
I thought I'd leave a few words regarding the history of junk journals for anyone who might be interested...
There is no actual "date" or proper written history of junk journals, but there are mentions of what was being done that have helped to piece it together a bit. As I understand it, "junk journals" made with bits of this and that garbage, began after 2008, during the recession of that time, as a sort of protest to the increasingly expensive pre-made scrapbooking materials.
You see, scrapbooking is the real beginning of junk journals. And that has been around since before the 1800s when people would tuck keepsakes into their bibles to save them. Eventually blank-paged books became available and were called scrapbooks. The Victorians loved to keep the beautiful calling cards, greeting cards, letterheads, and envelopes that they received... and their scrapbooks were filled with them.
Scrapbooking wasn't popular for a lot of years, but became very popular as a crafting type in the mid-1990s and people were spending more and more on their hobby. In 2004, in the US, the scrapbooking industry reached its peak at $2.4 Billion. But in 2008, there was a crash in the economy of many countries. In order to continue with their favourite hobby, people had to resort to other things... and junk journals arrived on the scene.
As a child, we had scrapbooks in school to save various "good marks" and art works from the year. We were given a scrapbook at the beginning of the year and when there was something the teacher thought should be kept, our scrapbooks were handed to us to glue the 'whatever' in. Those scrapbooks were large, skinny, books (I'd say 12"x18"x perhaps 1/2" thick) with beige, newsprint type paper and we used good ol' Elmer's glue to paste things into them. I haven't seen scrapbooks like that for many years.
Thank you so much for the information! My mother kept a scrapbook for me all my life. It starts with cards given to her when I was born (I'm 65 so those are very vintage) and it lasted until I graduated high school. I still love to look at it every now and then. My grandson who is 15 was surprised that they had color photos back then... lol, but I do have some very old portraits that my mother colored by hand. I was very much into scrapbooking in the 90s... good memories.
I have a journal that I made for my mother...and she passed in February. So now I put items, pictures, writing in it that reminds me of her.
That's a wonderful memory journal idea. I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a mother is hard.
Prayer journal!! Love the pop up page!
I'm glad you said the word "collage"
Ive been intrigued by junk journaling. I keep hearing that "there are no rules" and that hasn't helped. My brain needs some kind of purpose or I'll be too lost to start something. If im told that it's a collage to help me express my creativity, then i "get it" and can start
But then i get intimidated by secret, fancy terns like "signatures"
Signatures are just groups of pages. I know that it can be confusing, but hang in there!
Thank you for sharing your ideas about junk journals..I see lots of videos on how to make one, but not that many on what to actually do with one. And thank you for doing the folded page video too.🌹💐🌸
You are so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
You do beautiful work! I don't "junk journal" but I use the same techniques in making story books. A story book is a book in which there is a story (duh) and the story has graphics to support it. The first story book I created was a diary of a young girl graduating from high school in 1918. She narrated events in her life from the graduation until Armistice of 1918. She wrote of friends, potential boyfriends, how World War I impacted her life and the lives of the people in her town as well as the Spanish flu. It was my first real attempt at making what my interpretation of a junk journal was. Of all the books that have followed, the 1918 diary is my favorite. I just got through working on a book about a young man who was born in the tenements of New York City at the turn of the last century. It was the most story intensive of anything I've created so far.
Looking at the journals you have created, I am envious of your gift for interesting and unique design. You craft each page as an individual entity rather than a mass making project. And, in the books you flipped through, I could tell you give thought to being unique rather than learning a system and creating according to it without veering from the system. Keep up the great work!!
I would love to see an example of one of your story books. I've never heard of that before... but I'm intrigued. :)
YES! Would love to see the folded paper! New sub 😀
Thank you for sharing your journals. I would love to see how to make the pop up page! I’m still new to journaling, but so far I’ve made a horror/ Halloween journal and a rose/ floral journal ( that I still have to decorate) and i also did meg’s junk journal July challenge that year. I was doing small monthly “journals” that I wrote in daily/ used as a planner.
The pop up page tutorial is now up! I hope you like it.
Oh, Tina. What an enjoyable few minutes it was to see your journals and hear your candid thoughts. Thanks so much.

I love the ones like your little cotton tail one, that arent meant to be written in, but almost like curated interactive treasure picture books for grown ups (and kids too). But its a tactile and visual book of pleasures for our hearts.
I love those also 😊
What a fun video! Love your journals. I have also done several small “ gratitude journals”; a “journal of favorites” (fav. Books, poems, songs, sights, gifts, vacations); and a “ journal of memories”.
Those are wonderful ideas for journals!
Thank you for all the glimpses into the journals! I have an altered book for card ideas. That was my first foray into junk journals. I have a journal I made and cataloged my last year in a foreign country. I also have a granddaughter journal (she's 2) that I add to as I spend time w/her or write a memory or a prayer for her. I want to make one like you described for "working in" rather than a theme or mission to get it done in a set time frame. I like Luisa and Barbara, too.
I lovepiggies . As I grew up with them. Our mumma loved the new babies . So we often buy her piggies .tfs your creative videos . 🙏💜
I change at different times of my live, sometimes to put my thoughts down on paper, my memories and at other times just to create
I'm the same. Journaling can be so therapeutic!
I would definitely be interested in learning how to do that! Love this!

Love "Charlotte's Web." I received a copy when I was elementary school age. I was born in 1953 and the book was originally published in 1952....I may have a first printing! I keep meaning to find a book store that deals in vintage books but haven't found one yet.
I love that book too!
That folded "pop-up" page is something I;d like to learn how to do. Love all your different journals.

Happy Crafting!!
I have been scrapbooking for over 20 years, I have done over 100 books, plus over 20 for my brother. Because I am recording our lives in rhe scrapbooks, I dont feel any need to journal. The word journal really throws me off from junk journals, though I do watch lots of videos of junk journal makers, and they are beautiful. About 7 years ago, I got caught up with the scrapbooking and discovered glue books which have been a perfect fit for me. I have made over 40 gluebooks by filling up vintage scrapbooks, or binding my own 8.5x11 pages and Ihave recently started filling up composition books, they get so fat and chunky and so much fun.
I think "junk journal" are the new scrapbooks... lol, but I love gluebooks as well. There's just something about glueing things to paper that is calming for me.
What a wonderful demo to share. The page opens to such a large area of creativity. So unexpected. Looking forward to challenging my skills.
Beautiful journal! I’m new to junk journaling and I’ve yet to decorate any of them I’ve made. Seems I just get overwhelmed when I sit down to work in one. 😟. Thank you for sharing, there were lots of great tips ❤️❤️❤️😊

Love them!
Thank you for all the inspirational ideas. I have been paper crafting since ages (and have tons of supplies), but am new to the junk journal world. I really don't want to write personal things in my books, but like that one can use them to fill with "treasures" and make them to "play with". I made 2 junk journal books recently and cannot wait to work on them. One is with various pages from different sources and the other is with Christmas and winter themed pages from diffrent sources.

That was so helpful. I have not made a complete journal as yet. Have made lots of toppers ECT to add to journals but did not know exactly where I was going. I have a Xmas recipe journal I am working on at the moment but wondered where I would go from there thank you so much 😊
Just play and have fun with it. Start sticking things that you love on pages... the rest will follow. :)
Loved the video! I have done little journals that document memories I have of a City where I lived for years... So, I actually wrote memories and comments and impressions of places at the time. I currently have a journal where I occasionally write about contemporary experiences, but it's original purpose was to be a repository for neat journal ideas and experimentation. My view of a junk journal is that it is yours to do whatever strikes your fancy! Add watercolor pages, reuse a cool collage for a card? Etc, etc 😂
I couldn't agree more!!

Hi Tina I just found your channel and subbed ya! I will go check out your other videos after I finish this one. I too have been asked so many times by family and friends what a junk journal is. They are so very fun to make. I have been making them since last November and I have learned so much just from watching other crafters. I like making the journals to store my memories in and a place to write down things I want to remember. This is a great video, really enjoyed it. Have a beautiful day and Happy Mother's day to you!
Thank you!
I'm currently working on TN style inserts to document the Month's events or base it on Seasonal theme. I also work on Commonplace junk journal to test out new ideas or store modern found ephemera. I have Dephemember 22 junk journal but took until January to complete it because I was ill for few weeks. I planning to work on journal to document my travels abroad, art journal or make another using more collected modern ephemera. I do following Barbara and Luise they are great inspiration. Before I took junk journaling seriously I was doing Smash scrapbook style it's the same thing really. I love flipping through the old ones they bring such joy.
I love gluing items to a page! It's so relaxing. Thank you for your comments.

I love the rabbit journal!
Thank you!
I would tell you that yes, I would like to see a tutorial on how to make that fold, but you've already made such a vid. Thanks! 😺
so instead, I would tell you some other stuff. First: I love the idea of the pigs journal. It would make a wonderful plaything with your grandkids. And moreover: I work with developmentally challenged youth, and to make a little booklet like that, on whatever subject they choose, would not only be a very industrious project, that would keep them occupied for a whole semester, if not the whole year; but more importantly, would give them a lot of power: to choose the subject, to direct the planning, to gather the materials. thank you so much for sharing that!
secondly, I love the idea of the cooking journal! it may not be what I'm looking for - I need a way to be able to link one recipe to more than one category, like they are organized on my computer - but will undoubtedly be fun to make. and it would undoubtedly be something my artistic daughters would jump at the idea to make together.
thanks for this vid! is very instructive and also inspirational 🙏
😊
I have junk journals. I typically use mine for writing and documenting my everyday life, but I also include ephemera as well, such as my wrist bands from the hospital where I had to have some procedure done, or the parking permit from mine and my husband's recent get way. I will be making an idea journal and a journal for Gi Kerr's Friday Freebies.
Gi Kerr is amazing! I have a journal that document things in. It's like an interactive diary... so much fun.
i would love this!
Loved this Tina! Very useful and informative 8

That video tutorial for the folded page is entitled "How to add an AMAZING Antiquarian Fold out to a Junk Journal!" Enjoy and happy crafting!
I think of junk journals mostly as art journals or art objects. Something that I think trips people up a lot in the definition is that junk can refer to the materials OR the aesthetic. Journal refers to documentation, which does not have to be done with the written word nor does it have to be about subject matter that is personal or even true.
New to your page. Love the folded page. I am currently working on gothic style journal.
That sound amazing!
New subie ! Love this helpful video.. it so hard sometimes to explain to people I make the journals for about how to use them..not anymore 👍👍 . Will be checking out all your past videos..hugs take care
