  • Ahh, the carburetor. The part that makes the #w650 bikes infinitely more authentic and legendary than the #w800 sequel. The w650 says “I’m Meguro” with a grin on every kickstart 😄. (I like teasing the W800 owners)
I wanted a bike with a carburetor from childhood. In fact, now that I have it, I don’t want to go back to fuel injection. The carb gives any motorcycle that “steam punk” appeal. A real motorcycle shouldn’t be precise; most importantly it shouldn’t be perfect. It shouldn’t have any rider aides. It shouldn’t always have a smooth start. Who said that you should ride off without caring to warm it up with a “self-unalive” choke lever!? Preposterous!
Where is it written that one should not be able to adjust the idle mixture and rejet for more power!? Computer controls how lean the mixture is as per some government mandate?! Sacrilige! ;))
Seriously through, this carb never gave me any real trouble. The bike always started even with unadjusted idle mixture screws. It started from the first kick or from the first spin of the starter. Never had any problems with it, so don’t be afraid to get this bike with a carburetor. In all likelihood you will only get more enjoyment out of it.
Idle screws setting (factory default): 2.1/8 turns which is way too lean.
My personal idle screws setting: 2.3/8 turns out. (2.5 works even better)

The opposite of `advance the timing` is to `retard the timing`, just to help you with your very good English.
