5:22 got me there.. "it's got a bezel" x3, "but apart from that, it's full screen." 🤣
I was lucky enough to have one of these gifted to me in 2010. I was elated. I ended up using that thing for years, and passed it down as a loaner for my younger cousins who gamed on it pretty hard.
That iPad was a beast. With everyday use, the full aluminum design got pretty dinged up, but all the damage was just cosmetic. The OG iPad was actually really solid and durable back then.
The biggest mind blow feature at the time was definitely the web browsing. A multi touch mobile web browsing experience at that screen size was pretty unheard of in 2010.
The original iPad OS was admittedly really feature lacking, but because of the lack of bloat and fancy features, it was really responsive and snappy. Then all the later updates added a bunch of features and apps become more power hungry, so it slowed down to a point being pretty much unusable.
Years later, after leaving the iPad in a drawer, I was disheartened to discover that it didn’t boot anymore. Plugging in to a various chargers did nothing, so I suspect the battery or its power circuits had finally failed.
What a legend that thing was… Good times.
Maybe have the charging port, battery replaced. Relatively cheap
Keep it on a charger for a day the battery might be very very low to a point that it requires time
I am having the same problem with my ipad mini 1
In my drawer for years and suddenly it can't even charge. I was almost given up until I try to clean the charging port and it does work!! I hope it will work for you too 😊
Great read 👍

I miss how each app felt individual and how they had their own personality and character instead of there being a "system theme" style design. I miss Cover Flow!
Right! I feel like the collective taste in UI aesthetics is maturing backwards from what you would expect.
Modern UI is really focused on shapes and colors. It’s elegant… but almost “childish” in a way because of its minimalism and colorful appeal.
But UI during the times of iOS 4-7 was more focused on the UI elements having textures and a sense of depth (via light reflection and shadow).
In my opinion, that early skeuomorphism has a more mature, adult appeal to it, because it’s that kind of attention to detail and fine design that adults usually appreciate more.
But I guess now that skeuomorphism is associated with old iOS, and very old and now slow iPhone and iPad models, people now see the style as being outdated.
As a side note, I remember somewhere in iOS 4 through 7, they gave the Music (iPod?) app a round, brushed aluminum textured volume slider that changed its reflection based on how you held the phone. This was before they introduced the parallax wallpapers that was also based on the accelerometer.
I remember my mind was blown.
Yup. Now everything is just flat, basic, and bland. But hey it’s modern!😁Lol
The current UI look is akin to something I'd expect from a kids toy.
You just reminded me I used to spend hours adding the cover arts to my iPod classic so the cover flow would look good... Seems like decades ago now

I have a Gen 2 iPad. Turned it on last year for shits and giggles. Worked well for casual browsing and YouTubing. 7.5/10.
Have one too, It was incredibly sturdy and survived many drops for about 8 years. I turned it on last year and was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked, since it had iOS 9 running it managed to download some of the apps but there were still some other apps that became incompatible. This was my first apple device and I was very impressed since all the android smartphones that I had owned weren't a lot more faster and smoother than this iPad even though this iPad was 8 years older to them.
I still have a gen 3 or 2 mini but it's broken
I cant download youtube on mine and the screen resolution is awful
@@The_MEMEphis if you've downloaded youtube back when it was still supported, you can reinstall it
@@piepie3178 unfortunately it was on an old iCloud acoustic I don’t have access to anymore so my iPad is rendered useless unless I get access to the email
I really felt the skeuomorphism there Sam, and not just the table of the games centre either! 😂
Which year was this ipad released if i may ask? It's very informative.
@@mrkitty777 2010
@@WaltuhD 👍
The skeuomorphism was mostly good, everything just made sense. And the Aero theme from Mac OS X and Windows 7 looked beautiful!
"Why wrap things in plastic, that takes out the fun, and that's not how you have kids" 😂 Yup, can confirm, kids come in boxes with no plastic. Sometimes a stork delivers them to your doorstep.

Can't wait for Sam to review the latest ipad in another 10 years
Considering my mum still uses her old iPad 2 with 3G to this day I wouldn’t be surprised if this thing still works today haha
She should get Jailbreak then get an App Store tweak to get Older Versions of Purchased Apps/Games it would help with older versions because it can actually work (don’t expect EVERYTHING to work (that has older versions available for you to get) iPad 2 is still a bit limited) I had one and then last Christmas (2021) I got my iPad 8 it’s my main device I’m using it right now but iPad 2 is still great (keep it at latest iPad 2 version 9.3.5 or 9.3.6)
@@FroztYcle4737 I'm imaging how long it would take to explain to my parents what a "jailbreak" is, reassure them that it's legal, that it's not going to break anything, explain how to use Cydia, and why you would even want to jailbreak. By then, a new iPad will have come out. 😅
My dad uses my old 1st gen iPad also. He mainly uses it to browse and look on the Web for stuff. But I think he's struggling to connect to any modern sites now 😂
I found my ipad 2 after moving. This thing is 12 years old and still turned on after probably 4-6 years of being off! Wish I could download games on it but pretty sure games would be too demanding now for it anyways 😭 app store is filled with things I can't download smh!
@@theDatatsushi she uses it mostly for jigsaws and word games so I'm sure you can download games on it i would think
I remember playing Tap Tap Revenge 4 on the old iPad. I used to play it a bunch with my uncle because it had split screen, that game was great. I feel like mobile games wayyy back then were much better than the mobile games that we have today. They were much more like actual gaming experiences rather than clones of other games. 2011-2014 was a golden age for tech and all different forms of media, I swear.
Right!
The smartphone wars were really raging.
The iPad was born and Android tablets were popping up everywhere.
Social media like Twitter and Instagram were really taking off.
CZcams was getting a major boom of channels with 1 million+ subs.
The indie game scene was taking off and suddenly a whole generation of kids wanted to be programmers and game developers.
Man, the 2010s started pretty awesome. Too bad it ended with the world burning with pandemic, natural disaster, war, and inept and crazy world leaders.
Omg I used to play that game with my sister! I had forgotten the name. Thank you!
games today are just packed with ads :(
feels like sam is building an apple museum.
Great to see you updating your tec Sam. It was about time.
Love your content Sam, hilarious video as always!!
I have an iPad 5th Gen, with iOS 10.3.3 still works like a peach! I use it for my class work and watching movies and vids on! It’s too good 😊
@Defund the trees oh don’t you worry, it doesn’t have wallet or anything like that on it 😂
@Defund the trees Oh yeah bro it totally could be cYbErHacKeD
Its fine to use banking and wallet apps as the software is more than fine if updated, hell as long as you can sign in the website will be the one providing security
How
You should use old jailbreak tweaks and some ones to revive services when you use the iPad again
Ha, that could be cool! Thanks
@@SAMTIME No worries
Why is this channel so underrated, CZcamss algorithm should change for the benefit of SAMTIME
I personally love the skeuomorphic design more than modern iOS. And that calendar app is MUCH nicer than the current calendar app
Thats y I quite iOS:
Too much changed
I miss the old skeuomorphic design the good old days of apple they were so ahead of time.
Well considering my iPad *2* is barely usable in 2022, I can only imagine how painfully slow that relic must be 😁
its not slow but unsupported
it's impressive how my iPad 2's battery is still alive
I stopped using my iPad 2 like 4 years ago, but it's still usable, my sister use it for Zoom calls
@@teabreakbeats no one did say that
Worse then barely... It's a shiny brick 🧱 that's painfully slow
This is the first video from you that i see...I randomly saw it on yt...Its funny and a good kind of humor......You deserve a suscribe.....
I can't believe its working! keep it up! Shared everywhere! You deserve it!
Thanks Henry, stay FUNKY!
6:00 Android/Google has its own problems, but I have to give them credit here for detecting compatibility issues and hiding apps that won't work rather than teasing you with all the apps you aren't allowed to install and if it isn't on the play store it isn't too difficult to download apks instead of having to root or jailbreak your old device.
That's Apple way of saying: "Please buy a new Apple device"
@@kamikakushi_ I mean showing you everything can be nice like the app store "sells" it you just can't get it
iOS 12, in for example an iPhone 6 that can't run the latest iOS will offer you the latest version of the app that is compatible with it, and explain what it is doing.
@@katbryce the equivalent is android 9 released around the same time and it should be getting support long after iOS 12
@@katbryce in 2015 there was the Galaxy note 5 it's on Android 7 even that's probably gonna get app support longer then iOS 12
I used the very 1st iPad Mini, the device was a beast. Even with that (not) so little tablet, i could do so many things. Things were greater for several things.... like the system ain't that systemized ... they worked separately for each another app. Oh good old days!
I actually have a working original iPad. I put a SIM card in it and it still works. But it's only good for simple E-Mail viewing and some calendar stuff. Sadly 3G support was discontinued in my country, but 2G still works.
Glad to see you're back here buddy!
I actually learned a lot. Thanks, Sam.
My 2010 iPad still earns its keep as a music source plugged into my car stereo. I manually sync it with iTunes on a desktop PC. Still works great for this specific purpose.
Just subbed. Great content!
I’m new to your content but I laughed so hard I yelled when you stood up and displayed those camouflage cargo shorts 🤣
This brings back memories. I had a first gen iPad when I was in college as my every day carry device.
4:26 the text at the bottom makes me want to attempt
Verified and now likes. 😂
I have a 64 gig 3G Cellular model, jailbroken, and it's amazing how much music, games, applications, video, photos, and other random crap i could possibly put onto an iPad.
(also I have to know where that Mark Zuckerberg clip came from)
The Zuckerberg clip was from a weird Facebook Jarvis parody thing 😂 czcams.com/video/ZGLPxEv_EWo/video.html
That notes and calendar has a satisfying feel.
I won my first iPad. It was the iPad2 when it was first released. I’ve been using iPads ever since and still love them.
Amazing tutorial buddy!
Nice one Sam
Oh man this brings back so many memories, I remember I had one back in the day
Sam: "let's try surfing the web!"
iPad: "hmm... how about *_CRASH_* "
Those page turning animations still look pretty slick.
It can also still be used as an external laptop display. Quite handy for travel.
The way you sync with Finder on newer macOS is similar to how I sync with my iPod Mini I bought at the start of 2021.
Nice jobs,thanks share
Dear god I love your energy.
Even though I've upgraded to the latest iPad I still have my 2010 iPad. It still holds a charge and has the best games still on it, many that I can no longer find (because now every game is loaded with ads or has limited play unless you pay them! LOL) , so I use it for all the games I loaded on and for the music still on there. :) btw, most of my other tablet brands that are older either died or slowed to a crawl. ;)
I have 2 of them put in nice aluminum frames to make my own digital picture frames. They stay on and plugged in and haven't experienced issues in 3 years of running them on slideshow
I am still using my original IPad from 2010 every day, and it works just fine. However, just two days ago I took delivery of a brand new 2022 IPad Air Gen 5, with 5G so that I could run some new programmes that my old unit was unable to handle. In its day it was the bees knees, and one of my pet hates with my new pad, is that sill position of the on/off button. I also miss the button at the bottom of the screen.
Loved the currency conversion
Maybe not an iPad, but this did inspire me to pick my up old Nexus 7 from 2012 and mess around with it, thanks
Super funny as always
Temper your expectations and it’s absolutely useable. I got give one last year and repurposed it as a comic book reader. Nothing wrong with it at all.
I absolutely love skeuomorphism, really wish it was still a thing.
I remember standing in line for this!
I recently found my old iPhone and the thing feels infinitely more modern than the present ones, the buttons are plush on the sides you don’t see them and it sits perfect in your hand
this was called skeuomorphic design:
is a term most often used in graphical user interface design to describe . A well-known example is the recycle bin icon used for discarding files.
Not me literally using an iPad 3 in 2022
Can you please tell me what okd ipad I can buy for my 6 year old ? Just for CZcams videos and games apps ? I don’t know anything about iPads . Thanks
Is there any other ways of getting this old ipad to support current programmes/apps?
Acctually im using this to2atchthis video right now i didnt know it was the first version thats a fun surprise for me
I seriously enjoyed this video, and especially the little clips you throw in, they really add to the funk! I love the skuemorphic look of the old iOS versions.
The appstore doesn't support most games on it since you need iOs 10 or higher and the iPad 1 is stuck at iOs 9 but if you have a newer iPhone you can still get to download games on your iPad 1.
This chaannel is going to grow😂 I can tell
I like how the packaging still looks just as modern
I have 2nd generation of iPad that I bought refurbished a few years ago.
Still got mine! Whats on there stays on there! Its mine, all mine! (Surprisingly the battery seems to keep going!) Just wish they hadn't crippled the processor, it was not that slow before that debacle.
I still have that.. it won't allow me to go on CZcams.. very sneaky and clever to purchase a new one lol
I think iBook still works on it as long as it's compatible! Say, a PDF file should work. My wife's iPad 3 does do a lot, but it's not compatible with apps after the last system update.
Man I loved the skeuomorphism of early Apple. I LOVED it! It WAS Apple! I’ve never forgiven them for going to the absolute crap, soulless UI that they make us use now on IOS.
Imo the flatter the better the pre 7 design felt bloated and confusing the flat design is the best way to interact with a slab
Thanks to Scott Forstall who didn't want to sign the apology letter you lost the skeuomorphic UI
*apple reverts because of verlin swarey saying that in a random youtube video comment*
In an increasingly digital world, the need to make the UI we interact with feel real becomes less. The idea is that now that people have familiarized themselves with interacting with tech, the future is about making that tech disappear into the fabric of people's lives. No need making a button look like an actual button if its placement and usefulness is so obvious that people intuitively know to press it when they need to - before now, people essentially needed to be instructed on what to press and swipe at etcetera and skewomorphism was a rather explicitly implicit means of telling a user what something was for.
Clean UI isn't just an Apple thing these days
@@chrisjfox8715 yes, before the ui was like that to get used to easily, now most people know how phones work, so theres no need for that kg
There are truly some animations that I would like be back.
My dad, not being much of a techno geek, thought the iPad was the most amazing thing when he first discovered it. I remember him having the rounded back. He loved it so much that he chose to purchase my mom and me the next generation the following year. Normally I wouldn’t get such an expensive gift nor was it some thing I actually asked for, but I’m glad he bought it for me. I still have it to this day. But it it is becoming obsolete. I need a new one.😢
I have an ipad mini 1gen and I never really realized how old it was until I had to buy a newer one….
What is the name of the music used on the end of the video?
great video like an user who uses an ipad2 for task like netflix and playing my old 32 bit gmes you cab download the conoatible apps in an old user account, except the google one they actually vanish, but other games and apps still works, except for the ipad mini
i still have my ipad 2! tho its really outdated and a lot of apps arent really compatible with it. it still can be used to store files/photos temporary!
Does it work with Apple Watch, at least the Series 1 and Apple Pencil?
I have the same "incompatible" problem with my gen 2 iPod. :-)
Pfff nice vid! :D
Used to have an Ipad 2 growing up. Got it around late 2012 early 2013 but it broke in 2016 (everything started looking blue for some reason and then it stopped displaying). Kinda wish I kept the broken Ipad, could've probably fixed it
I do miss skeumorphism. It was a really fun time to be a designer.
I have an Asus tablet from around the same time. It has the same problem with new apps not being compatible and there are no OS updates available.
Watching this on an iPad Air 1st gen. I’ve had it for 6 and a half years.
Imagine if a A5 notebook couldn't be opened in 12 years. 🤣
3:06 Fun fact: Saturday translates to Samstag in german. That literally translates to Samsday (tag = day).
You have to have bought or downloaded the apps previously on other devices, then it will offer to install an older compatible version.
You didn’t have to… but you did. And I appreciate it 🎉
Have one that still works but can only really handle basic web browsing and nothing else.
Tip if you log in with your original account.
You can still download some of the apps on their appropriate versions.
Bro im 15, started plaing minecraft on my pc, and got the ipad and played on that lol. The good old days where crappy game ads didn’t exist
Hilarious. Great job!
"It's like or shut up" - very good description of youtube these days
I know I sound like a broken record, but you CAN still download apps if you jailbreak it.
And it’s surprisingly easy to do.
You should do a part two of this video where you jailbreak it
I like the old one because you can just open it with a swipe, the calendar looks more realistic,
I stIil have my old first Gen iPad too… it has been relegated to basically a fancy paperweight many years ago…
Ios 5 is the best ios ever created. All the system apps are soo beautiful.
I jailbreaked mine and used it as a fancy clock XD to this day
I am starting to feel old because I have worked with all this apps :))
You might be able to download the last supported version of the apps
"why wrap everything in plastic? that's not how you make kids" - Samtime..I will remember this..
what time is it now Sam ?
I recently tried using my dad’s iPad 4 running iOS 10. Can’t do much with it anymore.
You take back what you said about Apple TV+ this INSTANT!
Pre installed finger print lmao 🤣
Do you guys remember a game called gravity guy? My friends and I would play this on my iPad in class.
