- In the mid 90s Keith Van Horn was considered the next best thing to Tim Duncan, and taken right behind him in the 97 NBA draft. He had a tremendous college career, and a good start as a pro. At that point, no one imagined this guy that would've won rookie of the year if not for Tim Duncan would only last until age 30. He had a smooth game, could shoot, post up, and was ultra competitive. What Happened? Where is he now? Let's talk about it.

Salute to KVH for leaving on his terms... many people forget the business side of basketball isn’t just about contracts...having to uproot and move your family multiple times can be frustrating and draining ...especially when you don’t have the stability of a long term deal ... but even that doesn’t mean you won’t get traded... he could’ve and should’ve been more than he was career wise, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way ... great video bro

KVH was fun to watch in College. He was nice, had length, could shoot, and move. He would fit well in the league today.
I wanted to post the exact same comment. I really liked VanHorns game and he was DEFINITELY ahead of his time. His game was tailor made for this era. A stretch 4 who could bang down low a bit. He was born a generation too soon as he would easy get a bag in today's NBA.
What Dirk became, I thought Keith was going to be. Loved his game.

Nets were foolish to give up Van Horn for a past his prime Mutumbo. The Nets lacked reliable big men after Kenyon Martin left in 2004. KVH should have been part of the Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson trio.
They really missed him against the spurs. I wish they could've gotten mutombo without giving him up.
@Karlmalowned32, Management really had no choice in the matter. Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin wanted Keith gone and they already had Richard Jefferson who was Keith's backup who was playing very well.
Vanhorn's game had already started dipping at this point, I can't say the Nets did wrong there. They did reach the finals again after this decision the next season.
@@ruxcooking You're right, KVH was s stretch big man that would have pulled Duncan out the paint. Then again Van Horn played the Small Forward position. His real chance was against the Lakers the prior year. Yeah Shaq was in his prime but Van Horn could have stepped up and really been a threat at SF because Rick Fox was not that good of a defensive player. Nets had a complete mismatch at the SF in the finals. They didn't capitalize off of it.

Seriously doubt that story about him “not wanting to play with the brothers” in Philly was at all true. It’s a dirty business, and agents, GM’s, owners and other players will say negative things about you as to not make themselves look like the bad guy.
When Van Horn was slated to go to Philly the first time, that franchise had a terrible rep, whether it was AI “talking practice?” or coach Larry Brown, while although an outstanding head basketball coach, was a task master, especially brutal with rookies and younger players. No respectable, hard working young player, who just played for a players coach in Coach Majarus and Utah, would want anything to do with that situation. It was toxic. With no end in sight.
He gambled smart and got what he wanted, like most star players do now.
Dude was cold on the court. Hellacious drive as far as being a competitor, cold outside J, smooth handles for a big man, and skilled enough down on the blocks to know when and where to get his, without damaging his body. Not to mention his ability to stretch the floor and open up passing lanes for other players. Would be a top 10 talent in today’s game.
Good for him for using the system that so often has used players and left them when they’re skills were eroding. He got the drop and the bag.
I remember this cat from way back at Diamond Bar high and told my boys not to sleep on him. His game was nice.

I think that story was true. I remember when all that came out and watching his demeanor on the bench with his Philly teammates. He looked like he didn’t want to be there. I can’t hate on him for using his basketball talents to get paid and bounce. Pun intended.

Still wouldn't be top 10, Van Horn was a slightly better Chandler Parsons with more of an inside game. That's not a knock either, the man could play and would have been a bigger name if not an outright star.

No he was a great fit. Just like Many players he was a casualty of bad systems. In my opinion he still made the most of it. He would shine in today's NBA. I wouldn't quite put him in the stunted growth category.
Before Chandler Parsons, there was Van Horn. Finessing big contracts then not nearly living up to it

I remember reading this statement that Van Horn would be the last great college senior (due to underclassmen leaving for the draft) but I forgot that Duncan was in the same draft. That could have been said for him too. Another amazing video Stunted!
I can reflect one game where Keith Van Horn was on the New York Knicks roster against the Orlando Magic at the old O-Rena. And he was constantly lighting up Magic defenders all game long from mid-range and from behind the arc. The whole arena was cheering him on. I know there are a lot of transplanted Knicks fans in Orlando, but even Magic fans were applauding him.
He was my favorite player as a kid. I remember collecting his cards and being so excited if I pulled one. It was a lot of fun to watch play. It’s easy to think about what could have been, but he left me with so many good memories. I’m happy he did what was best for him and his family and I’m grateful for the times I got to watch him play
Randomly watched him when I was a kid and he scored 40 points in that game. He was a good player for those few years.
I forgot about him having them seasons where he averaged in the high teens in ppg .he was like a much better Danny Ferry and very watered down Dirk or Brad Miller type of power Forward. He had a stellar semi short career considering he wasn't as athletic as the competition back then and was able to shoot and compete still.

I can't help but wonder how his career would have turned out if either he went on ahead and embraced playing in Philly from the get go or what if the Nets don't trade for Marbury and build the team entirely around him and his skill set to make him feel comfortable.

Along with Tim Thomas he should be an example of a talent type the NBA didn't know how to utilize in that ERA.
He could’ve stationed his family in one location like many NBA/NFL players do. Most live in L.A. or ATL even though they play in Milwaukee or Utah for example. I’m glad he found peace but lots of PROFESSIONAL athletes do that. Also if he was a better player teams would’ve invested more in him.

My first taste of any US basketball, was from Utah when Hanno Möttölä joined the team led by Van Horn. That was quite a big deal back in day in Finland, and some Utah college games were televised here, but NBA wasn't shown.
Van Horn was an absolute beast. Thanks for the recap of his career. Didn't really know what happened after the bright start.
I was a huge Nets fan with KVH was drafted, after the first few weeks it was obvious the team had something special and the sky was the limit.
He was very aggressive around the rim using his jumping ability to attack the basket. Then he broke his leg, he was never the same player again. Perhaps basketball was merely a job to him and breaking that leg made him a very passive player after that? Either way, the guy was never the same again and ended up becoming an average player.
He had all the tools needed to be a superstar.
He really needed a floater/ in-between shot that could freeze shot blockers before they could help. He stopped driving as much because teams sent help at him and he wasn't a good passer, had to go all the way to the rim, and his shots were flat and easily blocked. He also never played with a 3 that could shoot with the Nets so there were at least two guys that could give help.
Not sure why I never realized he retired so early. Still felt like he had a respectable career.

IMO this dude was as good as Luka Doncic, he was just in an era with REAL Superstars, and also on a bad New Jersey Nets team. Had he been in this era he would be a top player for sure.
The 97-98 Nets were the 8th seed. Man they were scrappy and I thought they would be better than they were before the Kidd trade.

@@brandongilbert3071 He was definitely as good as Luka but not on his level as a star. This era is completely different than the one Van Horn played in. The era Van Horn played in had legit centers and power forwards. He dealt with much tougher physical play, with crowded paints and less ticky tack fouls. I could go on and on, but I won't. Luka is good, but he's only this good because of the era. Had he played even 10 years earlier he wouldn't even be close to being considered an MVP caliber player. That era had legit shooting guards galore. The era matters no matter what folks think. This era is littered with G league talent masquerading as starters.

Awesome video. I was a huge fan of Van Horn. I even wore high socks for a time because I saw him do it. Never was aware of the stuff swirling around him not wanting to play in Philly, but it makes sense. AI and Jerry Stackhouse were rumored to be beefing and Derrick Coleman didn't have the best rep either (as you alluded to in his video). Plus, Keith Van Horn did stick around after Steph got traded to Phoenix and was a piece on one of those Nets NBA finals teams. Got traded for Mutombo the next season.

He took full advantage of immobile 4s in that era but you are right, in this era of so much small ball, if he has no shotblocker to worry about, 30-40 points is possible out of him (not averaging of course) he would probably get 18-20
