    Pretty damned amazing for manifolds. STORY- I
    rebuilt a 440 for a friend in 1992, in his '68 Super Bee, had an A833 stick trans with Dana rear. He had me install straight line vertigate shifter, had a little separate shifter for reverse.. I made a reverse shift rod from GM column shift A- body rod. He wanted those manifolds on, so I used them. I'll never forget- we take car for first drive for shakedown, owner driving, me in passenger seat. State cop pulls us over almost instantly. Inspection sticker had expired while we were building engine, car sat in my garage. He didn't believe our alibi. I got out, opened hood on fresh 440 all painted red, he smiled, let us go, no fines. Lol !! That's the power of a fresh painted 440, you can bribe the cops !

      The 400 is even better, the bigger bore really helps them breathe. The stock compression is terrible, but modern cams can still build ample cylinder pressure, like the Hughes Whiplash, Comp Thumpr, and Howards Rattler. They sound ROWDY too! I wish they were around in the 90s, when I had a 400 in my Charger, another 400 in my truck, and another in my 75 Newport.

    EXcellent results Nick with minimal mods and a smooth idle & good vacuum to boot-! As ive mentioned before I had a friend back in the late 70's and 80's that owned a '69 383 4 spd. Roadrunner, and all we knew is the engine was built by the previous owner with mild mods for weekend strip runs by a guy named J. Albright and it was a real tire smoking beast with obviously more power than a factory 383 Roadrunner. We were always curious about the engines internal specs and it ran so good my friend didnt want to take it apart so we never knew exactly what secrets lay within Mr. Albrights engine work, but we never got beat in a weekend race on the local strip and it was as reliable as a tank. I miss those days so much, if I knew then what I knew now id have spent more time in his car and others like it I was lucky enough to ride in. Ah memories......

      I honestly don't think one was only 335 from the factory, even the '59. Sure, a 2 bbl Cali sold car with the added smog crap was maybe in that hp range, but those we had in '59 and early/mid '60s were likely 350/360 hp.
      This is basically a stock engine, factory bore and stroke. 9.4 compression, hydraulics, with a small cam and better flowing heads. Sweet 383 but all 383's were.

    Nick , IMO ,when exhaust manifolds get hot, gases flow threw more evenly as cast gets hot and retains it ,because there is little temp change from hot to cold, verses headers which I used to wrap them in asbestos to keep heat in till it hits the exhaust flanges ,that’s why in most cases stock manifolds are more efficient,and yes I changed a starter on my 70 Duster in the snow with headers on it 🥵

    The 383 in my Road Runner is at a racing engine builder as I write this. Should get started in next 2 weeks. Odometer says 38,000 which I think means it has turned over, but. . . the people who pulled the engine think it might be original mileage of 38K, because of condition of engine bay and undercarriage. I'm planning on rebuild, new cam, intake, carb and possibly stroking it. Planning on using stock exhaust headers so this video is super useful right now. Hoping to get to upper 400s torque and hp. The 383 is a very good and reliable engine. We had a 383 engine out of a wrecked '69 Charger R/T here in the South of the Netherlands. It was only 4 month's old when it was wrecked. We raced the first season as the car was and in 1970 we build a dirt track racecar with the 383, it's 4 speed heavy transmission and rear axle. I made an electronic ignition for it. In race, it ran on dirt track almost 95% of it's time full throttle and we had some issues with missfiring on cilinder 7. This came because of the standard manifold with the high revs (6000 rpm continuously). Cilinder 5 and 7 have their output after each other and cilinder 7 was facing the heat of cilinder 5 still under pressure in the exhaust manifold at the moment the cil 7 exhaust valve was opening. Cilinder 7 couldn't get rid of the hot gases, so at the intake stroke, the mixture ignited premature.
    We solved this problem with self made tubular manifols with double downpipes (and then sideways) on each side. Cilinder 1 was combined with cil 5 and cil 3 was combined with cil 7. On the other side cil 2 with 4 and cil 6 with 8. The sound was incredible, but we also gained power, because the revs on the same track went to 6300 almost continuously.
    I loved that engine and also it's sound. We made many victories with it for more almost 9 years. Then we sold the racecar and got a bit more "normal" as "sensible people" used to do.

      Jos...you can attest to the reliability of a 383 given the endurance test you put it through...did you ever have to rebuild it in 9 years?

    • @josdaalmans6977
      @josdaalmans6977 Před 2 lety

      @@lukepokrajac1057 The first racing year, the engine overheated. When we lifted the engine to put it in the self-build car, we found out that the valve in the exhaust was sticking (caused by the crash when the car was wrecked). So a big part of the fumes had to go trough the inlet manifold (you can imagine, it was hot in there) We had a blow-by on cilinder 3, so we lifted the heads, put a new piston in it, honed the engine and new piston rings went in. From that moment, only full throttle. We als had a higher cfm Holley 4 barrel on it. We had a lot's of fun with it and I would like to have 383 engine to put in our Landrover Ninety now with the 215 Rover V8 (also lovely sound).

    For a stock 383, that’s one stout motor! And those manifolds only cost 18 hp on the top end. And only 16 foot pounds of torque. Chrysler has some really good stock manifolds there! The 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner I had with its 483 was only rated at 335 hp at 5200 RPM. And if I remember correctly, 400 ft pounds of torque around 3800 rpm.

    It's clear that the owner just wanted a nice, streetable cruiser engine with some punch, and stock appearance. But an opportunity was missed to install a 440 crank with the mains cut down to 383/400 size, along with 440 rods, and MUCH lighter pistons with pins about .780 higher. MUCH more torque, and a smooth idle, and good vacuum too.
