I played this all through high school. it was one of my favorite pieces to learn. listening to it today brough back so many memories.
It was my favorite too.
I'm in my early teens and I have to play this piece in front of so many people and as a percussionist this is extremely hard to count, definetly the hardest piece I have ever played
I'm a junior in HS, playing this as a Euphonium for spring
Also have a listen to 'Urban Light' by James David. Played that last year for spring, really fun!
The time signatures in this piece are wild. It is intimidating when you first see it, such a fun piece
It was easy on flute. I barely squeaked into symphonic band as a junior, so I was grateful. I remember how our band director was always yelling at the percussion during this song. He called them rock heads 😂. In his defense, only one of them could read sheet music.
The most relaxed band ever.
Considering that’s song is not in any way relaxing to play and is grade 5 difficulty I agree
Good director!
just played this with ticheli conducting for a honor band, cool guy
Sounds amazing. can hear all distinct parts clearly :)
i’ve listened to this about 100 times, learning this truly is an interesting experience 😂
Playing this with Frank Ticheli for WIBC 2023
I played this song with my wind ensemble in high school (2009-2013) and it sounds so beautiful to this day. I’m almost 30 and still remember every rehearsal. This is a phenomenal performance.
sameee!! lol exact year and everything 😂
I remember playing this is high school (20ish years ago). This was deffs my most memorable song in my band days. A pain learning it, but so rewarding when we finally got it.
I played this song in my high school wind ensemble in 2002. It was such a fun song to play as a bassoonist. Miss those days and I wish I kept playing in college.
This takes me back to senior year in high school. Loved playing this!
I think we can all recall our parts. I played the snare and toms. 20 years ago !
im playing it sophomore year 🫠
Same! A piece that has stuck with me and I continue back to we as well as Blues shade and both Gustav Holts’s second suite in F, Mars, Venus
@@jerryrivera9312 I played Snare and Toms this year for my senior year performance also!
@@williambreeden8193I somehow got 1st part clarinet and I was a freshmen and there were 7 other clarinets but they were upper class men ( I was the only one that got 1st )
Within the first few seconds, this brought back memories from playing this (on trumpet) in high school!
My high school band is learning this right now. Counting in this piece is so strange, but it sounds really cool. Great performance!
What hs do you go to
my hs is doing this as well as arabesque and inferno lol.
We’re doing this with “A Hymn for the Lost and the Living”
same here, 9/8 and 11/8 are a different beast
We doing this for wind i play tuba so most its easy but I think the frech horn is pretty hard
The alto sax solo is golden! 🎷
I swear Tichelli always put the best Alto solos in his big pieces, between this, Wild Nights, and Blue Shades
First comment. Well played! Enjoyed it. Brings back memories of my band days.
Damn they are so crisp
I love that song wish they showed who’s playing more
This is so great. thank you!
I love listening to this group. They are amazing!
Fabulous! What a great band and awesome Music Director. Brilliant performance.
Epic performance and amazing recording.
The first time I played this piece was my senior year (99-00) in high school for all region, and Mr. Corporon was the conductor!
I remember playing this in band.
We played this like 3 times my high school year and i really thought i was gonna have to play it a fourth but thankfully we got to do something different for my senior year in Incantation and Dance
That tenor sax player so pleasing to the eyes 😂
It’s my sophomore year and we are playing this, and boy am I scared haha
i got to play the oboe solo in this it was one of the best experiences!
I love this song so much, confusing to count tho
My sister played this at Carnegie hall it was so cool
One of the most complicated pieces of music to learn. We had to learn and perform it in a week as teenagers for U of D band camp our high school teacher convinced us to join because they didn't have a full low brass section. Speaking of which, Dude, trigger trombones? That's a no for me, but I was also known as being the jazz chick who kept swinging the eighth notes throughout high school. I have no regrets. Should've taken it up with the first chair; wait, you just tried 😉🤣.
The struggle playing this song as a percussionist is real. Having to count 2 + 3 + 2 +2 for every measure really sucks. Also, the musical queues in this song are hard to hear so you have no choice but to count lol. Eventually, you get used to the rhythm and you just know where to start.
11/8?
@@shaneweisberg6884 9/8, but a very weird 9/8. It's basically 4/4 with an extra half beat.
Now take that struggle, and consider having to march to that... 7/8 was enough of a pain for me, and I have nothing but mad respect for those DCI/WGI cats who do the even stranger time signatures
@@LavenderSystem69They made you MARCH this?
I wouldn't wish that sort of torture on my worst enemy.
@waitwhat238 I mean... our Visual Effect scores were through the roof once we could finally pull it off, soooooo... it WAS worth it. Pain in the ass, but definitely worth it
i remember doing this in begining band
Clarinet at 1:56 is my favorite part of the whole song
Mmm… I love me some low brass power chords!!!
5:48
Not sure how to feel about that ritardando at end
Wish the U of MD band had explored in the early’70s; is this euphonium player missing something?
What’s in the first altos horn?
It’s a tuning device for the lower notes. That’s me, btw.
dallassax lmao what are they called I would love to have one. Is there a link or a way I can contract you better about these
I knew I recognized that face, btw ur videos are an incredible help.
@@dallassax Haha i recognized you a few seconds in, good for you, great performance. Edit: isnt the silver horned dude in your quartet?
Everyone is fumbling with their mutes, trying to be quiet and putting on the floor… trombones just put it between their legs 😂
Definitely not inspired by Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo A La Turk
