I like how all the horror is kept to the bedroom without this scene. You get a sense of safety in the downstairs rooms of the house, a place where the adult characters can regroup after moments of crisis to discuss what to do about the evil that's going on upstairs. The suspense and terror becomes that much greater in the anticipation of what we will witness the next time we venture up those stairs, down that hallway and into that bedroom. However, the spiderwalk scene did work in the book for whatever reason.

+Scott MacKeen I agree. I haven't read the book (yet) but I know how the scene is portrayed in the book and to me it sounds much more creepy for her to follow her mom around the house quietly like that. Haven't it been for that part in the book I would have preferred the movie without it. The downstairs is kind of like the "break" where the adults discuss the problem and I was always curious, excited and really nervous to see what would happen next time when they entered the room upstairs. For her to all of a sudden run down the stairs seemed a bit pointless except that it was a bit creepy. It does kind of show that no place is safe though, but like you said it's more effective when all the horror is happening in the bedroom.

These scenes may not seem scary now, but when I saw it in 1973 people in the theater were screaming, crying, fainting. It was a cultural phenomenon because we'd never heard of exorcism or seen such horror in a mainstream movie.
Update: I noticed that some commenters are having an psychotic meltdown about the spider-walk scene. Indeed, in 1973, I did NOT see this scene because it wasn’t in the movie then. My point was that I saw the film before it became a cultural phenomenon. My error. I hope the people who freaked out have gotten over their trauma.

I get that a lot of people think that the spider walk scene kind of fucks up the notion that all of the demonic activity is behind Regan’s door, but it’s actually not. She plays with the ouiji board in the basement, she urinates in the living room, and the clay statue she made is found outside by the foot of the stairs. I think the original spider walk scene, score and brightness and all, is genuinely terrifying. The way she just moves more slowly down the stairs so we can really take in how contorted her body is, and the way she flicks her serpent tongue and darts after Sharon is creepy as hell. I really hate the 2000 edit, it feels so separate in tone from the rest of the film. It occurs before the crucifix masturbation scene, so it kind of dims that shock, already seeing her mouth gushing with blood. The original (as it was also written in the book) is unsettling, whereas the obvious CGI edit, which looks more noticeable to me than the wires, is too outlandish at that point in the film.
    My two cents ;p

Reading a lot of negative comments here about The Exorcist NOT being scary. First off I had to watch a laserdisc to VHS copy due to censorship about 1994. The quality was not that good and I was about 18 when I first watched it. It bored me to be honest. I was more into slasher movies at the time. Watched it a second time when I was in my early 20s and it scared the living crap out of me. Seriously, it made me uncomfortable for a couple of days. The Exorcist is a film like LSD or mushrooms - If you are in a bad place mentally at the time DO NOT go there.

What scared people so much was that it was so realistic and that this innocent little girl in a loving home had fallen prey to a force that all religions believe in, in one form or another and as such, this could happen to us too.

Why hasn't the "spider walk" caught on, like a meme or a cool thing for kids these days to do? Some people have done videos of themselves or friends doing the spider walk--and that's great--but it really should have caught on all over the country. Taylor Swift should be doing the spider walk in her music videos, and stuff like that.
