Oh Dear, Is David Lee Roth’s Time Up?!

- I have to confess, in the spirit of total transparency...I am a MASSIVE David Lee Roth fan. He is another rock and roll legend. A proper showman. I have been asked to react to some of the most recent footage of his singing and performing live - as some of you... think his time may be up. I refuse to believe this. Or is it?! You tell me.

Can you do an episode about Bruce Dickinson? He’s pretty ancient now and still going strong in my humble unimportant opinion 😃
Well 63 maybe not that ancient... let’s give him another 10 years
I’ll tell you what the crowd seems to be loving it enough. I don’t think he needs to worry too much what other people think 🤟

Love him or loathe him, David Lee Roth will eventually leave this world having had more fun than the rest of us put together. And for that he should be celebrated.
#truth!
On everybody else's expense he did. And being a douche. Not that admirable.
Definately.there may be one out there but ive never seen an interview where hes been despondent or sad or anything like that. Hes had a crazy life and more fun than most of us will ever have.
Amen! What a great comment!
Damn right💪
I saw Van Halen back in their heyday for both nights at the Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, London in June 1980. I remember I was 11 rows back from the stage. Never seen a band like it, they were magnificent and Dave was at his physical peak - he was an acrobat with a microphone - brilliant - and he sure as hell could belt out those husky vocals ! That's the image I want to keep in my mind - I too am the same age as Dave but a shadow of my former self !! I'm off for a lie-down now, this typing has taken it's toll !!
Well said!
Oh boy, the rainbow Theatre! I saw the Cure there, and Killing Joke once.
A friend went to see Black Sabbath in 1978 @ Hammersmith. I asked him how Sabbath were when we met up to play table tennis . He said this unknown American band blew them off the stage !!! He never stopped talked about Van Halen performance. I wish I'd gone too.
Your AWESOME brother
Very good.
Some people burn their candle at both ends, some people burn their candle in the middle, Diamond Dave took a flamethrower to his candle and came out rocking.
100% showman he never claimed to be a virtuoso singer but boy can he project and put on a show.
So glad I saw him solo back in the day and still listen to Skyscraper and his other albums to this day.
Very funny flame thrower😂
Your tact is admirable
My deepest respects son.
You have the good manners of a long bygone era
Keep up the good work

He does the same for me . An audio mind massage.
I listen to this great guy when I’m doing my piano practise.
@@pauldavid9351 just discovered I can still use DAW with him playing. So was ‘playing’ synth accompaniment .
1978-1984 - Van Halen was the greatest and coolest rock and roll party band ever and David Lee Roth was the best frontman.
Nope.... AC/DC was always better than Van Halen as a rock and roll party band, particularly from 1978-1984
Better songs, better sound...
@@carlmarks8170 Nah when you listen to AC/DC all their songs sound the same.
@@dsfddsgh You can say the same thing about many successful bands/artists if you're not a fan of them. The difference between AC/DC and Van Halen is that AC/DC's songs have endured over time. Van Halen really don't have many songs at all which have stood the test of time (apart from maybe a couple of corny Sammy Hagar tunes from '5150'). Which songs from the Dave-era still get played? Panama? Jump? Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love? Apart from the opening riffs, these aren't particularly great songs. That's my issue with VH... Most of the ingredients were there - great musos, tight band, full of attitude - quintessential rock stars, but their songs don't hold up. Eddie was an extraordinary guitarist who deserved a more talented songwriting partner than DLR. Dave was a great showman who looked good and screamed and jumped around the stage. But he was a mediocre singer who couldn't write anything. Imagine how great Van Halen could've been if Eddie had joined forces with a true artist instead of a circus clown.
@@carlmarks8170 can’t disagree more! VH debut album holds up still today! Front to back - sounds fresh and ballsy; tinged with Eddie’s revolutionary guitar playing! Yes, Dave’s voice is limited, but it works well with all the charisma he emotes.
Back in Black holds up really well too; sounds fresh and epic, but everything ACDC has done since is cringe IMO. Brian Johnson’s vocals got really tired sounding and worse with each successive album. Thunderstruck worked - but then it was gone again.
The whole Dave Roth discography with VH is fantastic! Not so much the vanHagar mall-crowd synthesized rock era - although there were some exceptions there too.
@@carlmarks8170 lol in your dreams.
Diamond Dave is just a gigalo and everywhere he gies people know the part hes playing.
I remember reading his autobio.
Mad respect for his years as an EMT, cutting his hair and helping to save peoples lives
.
Justin, you are so kind and encouraging in what you say in videos like this, you are helping making me become a better man. In life, it is too easy (and enjoyable) to tear people down (and I’ve been very negative about Dave’s current singing), but you do just the opposite. Thanks for being a good example.
Wonderful point and comment!
I agree.
I've only been watching for a couple weeks.
I'm not actually an avid music listener. I have a very busy life, with activities I'm very involved with.
.... But when I came across Justin Hawkins Rides Again, it intrigued me. And I keep on watching, and listening.
This video, and your comment, have brought some clarity as to why.
Justin's honest decent humanity.
The world needs as many positive people, willing to share their joy of living, their knowledge, and experiences.
Justin has much to share, and he does it in his own special style💃.
Did he have to put an addition on his house, to accommodate his wardrobe? 🙃.
I smile when I see the state of his hair... I have the same type of hair. It's so frustrating...sometimes you just give up, and you have to ignore what it's doing. If you lay down for even a minute, you get bed head. And it's hopeless to get under control! Lol.
As DLR said on the red carpet at the first MTV awards when asked if the band were going to win an award, "Doesn't matter if you win or lose...it's how good you looked!!"
I've seen him 3 times from the late 80s up until mid 2000s and each time the vocals might have deteriorated but it was a tour de force in performance art!!
I saw David Lee Roth during the Skyscraper tour and we left out of their shell shocked at how much energy was in that building, especially when he surfed across the crowd on a surfboard suspended from the ceiling! I have no idea if his voice sounded good then or not. But we left out completely amped.
That would have been a mental show! I’m very jealous of anyone who saw that or the Eat ‘em and Smile tour. Such a great band
Saw him in Edinburgh on that tour. Always remember Vai getting his guitar to say "Hello Edinburgh" and always remember it was all mindblowingly awesome. one of the best gigs I've ever seen. To be honest, apart from his high range, I don't hear a great deal of difference between latter years Roth and the stuff you hear on bootlegs from 78 or whenever. He's still the ring master. And still a one off, which in that arena is an achievement in it's self. He's always eschewed covention away from the studio, and presented Van Halen iive. Though there's some great stuff on YT from the opening nights of the Eat 'Em And Smile tour where the performances are all pitch perfect.
Great comment. That's the whole damn point. It's the tone and the vibe that matters. Unfortunately we're in a world of American Idols, auto-tune and other garbage where people take themselves too seriously. It's the intangibles that matter. I still go Roth's show and leave feeling a rush. It's that simple.
@@Whaddayamean13 that's rock and roll man! Opera is an option for those that require pristine vocals.
That is an AWESOME memory...!
Dear Justin Hawkins, you probably won’t read my comment but I am still going to share: you and your music have helped immensely through a rough patch in my life (way back in the past). Every time I listen to your music I am happy and smile and all my troubles just don’t seem so dire anymore. When I found this channel last week I shrieked like a teenage school girl making my son tell me that I was a huge weirdo (which I am and proudly so). Thank you so much for sharing your views with us all. Your positivity surely makes the world a better place to be in. ❤ from Portugal, Edna (my cats also enjoy listening to you - they both sit on the couch with me while I watch your videos).
My cats are Mr Meowgi and Catrick Swayze (in case you are curious about my feline friends).
1978 Birmingham Odeon, Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath, front row, I can still see, hear and feel the excitement that filled the venue as David Lee Roth burst onto the stage. Truly epic, in every sense. Pure Genius.
I saw Dave years ago on the Lil Ain’t Enough Tour - he is such an entertaining character on & off stage. It is kind of sad to see our heroes getting older & not able to reach their previous heights but more power to him - still going and rocking like only he can.
I have a different voice at 50 than I had at 22. Everyone has a different body, and changes happen for us in ways that are unique. My voice became a little rough, especially compared to when I was a choirboy, and the kind of music I enjoy playing changed as well. It's okay to change, it's okay to age. It is normal. People need to accept that as fans and as performers.
We get old and the place we occupy in the fabric of space/time eventually hits it's limit. But all those moments are still there, within the tapestry of the evolving universe.
Agree, and even if that same experience with a more youthful or capable voice can't be recreated, you're still getting an experience and a little taste of that memory and the feelings it brought.
Apropos of nothing, you always cheer me up. 'I was twelve once too' had me giggling, but 'he literally cries for help' and 'I don't know what I'm chewing' had me crying with laughter. But you're always funny and interesting and make an effort to be positive on top of being a melt-your-face-off rocker, an absolute gem. Thanks!
Dave says "Chewing"....always did....seen him! I SEEN HIM! LIKE BIGFOOT! SABE!
I giggled over the connections too as I’m notorious for doing that too
So glad you did this Justin. Dave was, is and always will be a legend. I would go and see him in a heartbeat as he makes me feel happy
DLR is a legend, fortunately saw him a few times, mid 80’s and early 90’s in his solo years, outstanding 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I saw DLR in a little club in the late 90's. I definitely paid attention his vocals and, he sang great. I had a VHS of the US Festival and was disappointed in the singing, so I went to the club with a jaded, skeptical attitutde on Dave's voice. I was wrong.
To me one of the biggest problems of the current media age is that too many people expect live performances to be identical to the record. Performances are performances, being a little crap every now and then is part of that performance. Its the beauty of seeing something 'live'. And those who don't get that old performers can't do what they could when they were young really need to get a grip. You go to a live performance of a long term 'legacy' band (AKA heroes to some of us!) to pay your respects if nothing else.
Funnily enough when you were dividing up the performance vs vocal split and mentioned Freddie Mercury my first thought was '100% vs 100%' 😃
I first saw Queen in 74 at the Croydon Greyhound. Before that I recall a very embarrassing day visiting every record shop in town in a failed attempt to buy 'Keep Yourself Alive' by Queen to receive exactly the same response from every shop assistant, of 'By who??'
I saw Van Halen on their first tour, when they opened for Black Sabbath in 1978. Van Halen blew me away! I still love him.
Thank you, your videos are truly a breath of fresh air. The knowledge and lovely positive attitude you posses is so refreshing. You are a legend, and the wonderful respect and courtesy you show when breaking down other legends is priceless. Thank you Justin.
I agree in the respect that Dave was never the best vocalist but had his own unique way of carrying a song like all the greats should have. He had a diverse range, super wail and low and deep but always seemed like on the verge of falling off if that makes sense. He's predominantly a performer and personality and you'll get tons of that and like no other.
I was looking up recent live videos of Kix the other night, was surprised to find Steve Whiteman's still singing to the original tuning. He's got his flat moments, but when he's belting it out with that fantastic screech of his, it's great, he can still do it.
They are still crazy popular in their home area. I have been seeing them since they started in small bar called Mountain View back in early 80s.
Im from Maryland, where KIX are from. They are still very much loved in the state.
@@dwade6322 My ex used to live in Maryland and was a huge fan …he was amazed that I knew who they were too
@@jaray7710 yup …my husband was from there and a huge fan
Thank you Justin. First fair & respectful assessment of DLR's vocals. Haters hate. Lovers love. But honesty is rare. He's a Legend. It's still worth the price of admission to see him do his thing!! You are speedily approaching Legend yourself!! 🤘♥️🙏
Having seen Van Halen for the first time on their Diver Down tour in 1982... the image of Dave and Eddie standing on a stage together was burned into my memory forever. Having the opportunity to see them together again when it looked bleak that it would ever happen again was a cherry on the sundae. He is the ultimate frontman and that's all there is to say, and nothing else matters. Nothing. Diamond fucking Dave indeed.
Well said....
What a decent human you are! So bloody refreshing. Lovely to hear critique from an honest, respectful and compassionate place and the love for these artist that you have, it just shines through. Top guy you are indeed!
We saw them XFinity Ctr in Massachusetts in '15....loved it ALL...! #DIRTYMOVIES #DROPDEADLEGS R.I.P.-EVH
I love Diamond Dave, sure his vocals are strained now but he puts on a great show. As Rick Beato said there’s nothing wrong with Daves vocals on the early Van Halen records.
You quoted Rick! 🤘😀🎸
Without DLR, there wouldn't have been a Van Halen. Period. One of the greatest entertainers we've seen.
I completely agree!
Keep doing what you love, Diamond Dave and as long as it’s genuine and real…we’ll be rocking’ with you!!!!
28th Feb 1991 I saw Dave Lee Roth supported by Warrant at the Shepton Mallet Showring. Was freaking awesome night in an actual cattle shed. Dave came to the stage on a massive inflatable microphone from the back of the venue. Hes a legend and can do what the fuck he likes :-P
Much respect to you for laying out why DLR shouldn't retire. I wish someone had defended Keith Emerson like this back in the day.
Appreciate your content and insight! Hope you're doing well, and that life is treating you good!
Saw the Rolling Stones last week, blown away, so glad I got to see them
Thank you Justin for your magical YT channel! My love for the Darkness has been reinvigorated, hope to see you in America soon. Long May you ride! ⚡️(PS. Any thoughts on ‘Church of the Cosmic Skull?)
I loved classic VH,and their whimsical hard bluesy harmonics..They were irreverent and unique with their jokey schtik whether the song narrative was light or dark.
And what's wrong with having a lounge singer voice?
I've always described Dave's voice that way in a positive lite.He embraced his low baritone and made it entertainingly hammy..
Dave made it all his own.
He fit well because he had visions of what lyrical themes would fit whatever tunes Eddie and the band came up with. They were a highly stylized band in their sound..
It was like a Vaudeville Metal experience..
Eddie's ridiculously great rhythm melodies and leads along with Dave's flambouyant showmanship set them apart and contributed to,influenced the ,sound, look and vibe of a large segment of what would become popular Metal for the better or worse.
The part that many bands got wrong, the shallow ones, was that Eddie hit you with driving rhythm melodies And solos..
But to the question of whether Roth should continue.
They're all going through a lot still over Eddie, and around all of these questions are being posed with regularity about tribute performances to Ed and the band legacy..
Whatever the remaining members decide I support..
Its controversial, considering Dave's struggles, diminished capacity and even more so just who would fill in for Eddie.
Maybe all-star jams with the remaining members?
Who knows?
I've read much within the band ranks is being considered..
Great episode Justin..
I agree, they should do whatever makes them happy,"VH."
Oh I began my comments during your video..
Just heard the Jovi part..
Nah Jovi recently Sounds way off,way off key as much as range..
To me its apples and oranges judging from what you've just shared of Dave,at least Dave is in key..
This is my opinion of the current comparison.
But I'm glad you mention Jovi's past soulfulness..
He did have a great range and deliberately added gritty inflections to his vocal style..
In 90's ballads you can clearly hear him singing more cleanly mixed in with grittier song vocals..
All that I have mentioned in my comments are just my listening interpretations.
Enjoyed hearing yours.
Oh just saw the finale of the Vegas clip, and I think it sounds good..
Great video, as always Justin, keep Rockin'
Beautiful and spot on analysis, Justin, thanks so much for this one....cheers! xo
If you ever want to read a great book "Van Halen Rising" is a good one. It details the entire early years of how Van Halen became a band.
You'd be shocked to read that David Lee Roth actually came to the Van Halen brothers house and informed them that he was going to be the singer of the band. The guys decided to give him an audition on the spot, which David failed in spectacular fashion. It was SO bad that they told him, to his face, he could not sing. They even went to a piano and hit a few notes and asked David to sing them, he could not. In fact, the way he even got in the band at all is a matter of extortion, he having a PA system, was able to rent it to the band...but he said he'd lower the price if he could "tag along" and it was in that manner that David sort of snuck into the lead singer role. Gene Simmons hated him and wanted him out of the band. After the band were signed, Ted Templeman and Don Landee wanted to replace DLR with none other than Sammy Hagar. It took some serious lobbying by David to get them to NOT replace him. Both Ted and Don noted that David was not a SINGER and that he either YELLED or TALKED out the songs and Eddie had to TUNE his guitar down because David could not hit any actual notes.
Read the book.
Wow. I'ma check it out, man.
And they became massive with DLR. Go figure.
Some people said it was Eddie's playing but, instrumental guitar doesn't do well. DLR turned them from a jam band to the powerhouse they became. Sammy says it in an interview that he and DLR moved the band forward because the "brothers" would procrastinate.
@@renorailfanning5465
All of that is true. The brothers were dysfunctional in their methods and their ambition was lacking to the put it mildly. David was the guy that WANTED to be a star while Eddie was lacking anything even close to confidence, he had a hard to understanding how good he was and would constantly point to others he felt were better than him. David was the one telling Eddie he was great LONG before Eddie could even see it.
I'm not saying any of what I said to bash DLR, I love some of the early stuff and I can't even imagine Sammy singing some of those songs. Dance the Night Away is not a song that Sammy would have written, nor is Panama or any of the really classic stuff. I'm just reporting what the BOOK states, which I highly recommend to anyone that likes Van Halen.
David had a nice career but his ambition was tempered by the brothers and they always viewed him as an outsider. Sammy, in HIS book, RED, noted all the various problems that were present when he joined Van Halen. For ONE, they had NO money. They were selling albums but their "deal" always left them in DEBT to the record company and they never seemed to taste financial success until Sammy, who is a business man, got them to.
He replaced their 'manager', who wasted MILLIONS on things that were all DLR's suggestions but in the end, they just served to promote DLR's EXIT from the band.
Sammy brought the band to a mature place and was a very suitable addition at a time when Eddie was ready to grow as a song writer and a father. Van Halen were bigger than ever with Sammy, they made ALL their money with Sammy and they toured MORE and were at one time, the biggest band on the planet. All in all, it worked out for the best. There are things that are a shame and things that are great but such is LIFE.
Peace be to you all!
@@renorailfanning5465 What you said about instrumental guitar doesn't apply to Eddie. They would have done well with any singer. DLR is kind of proof of that.
@@TheCountofToulouse I read the book also. I just don't get why people, not you, slam DLR. Those Roth era albums killed it and Dave had soul, melodic sensibility, a clever way with lyrics and, stage presence.
Saw DLR with VH for the first time in 2011, wasn't a DLR fan going into the show - Started out a little rough, and was a little creepy to watch. By the end of the night, DLR's was 10x stronger than at the beginning, and he was on fire! New-found respect, BIG DLR fan ever since!!!
Saw DLR Bristol colston hall 1994. Such a fun night. It’s Dave, that’s all that matters!
I totally appreciate and understand everything you said about DAVE I like the way you put a positive spin on it the glass is half full way to go bro
Justin, I was making a Darkness playlist on my Amazon music app a while back and I stumbled upon an interesting section of The Darkness artist's page. It speaks about a connection with Thomas Rhett, who is an American country artist and it says:
"Thomas Rhett started taking musical influences early in life, including The Darkness. Considering his country style, the British rock band might seem like an unusual choice, but Rhett remembers encountering them at an impressionable age and drawing inspiration from their sound."
Would you care to elaborate on this, kind sir? If you're wondering about my opinion, comparing Thomas Rhett's music to The Darkness music is like comparing 🍎 to 🍊. I don't hear the influence at all in his music and also country music is not my cup of tea anyway. Also some of Amazon's "Like Artists" for The Darkness are not very good imo either. Can you think of any bands today that are similar to The Darkness' sound? Thanks Justin, love the channel ✌️❤🤘
I have seen Dave many times since 1979. He has never ceased to kick ass. The eat em and smile tour is in my top ten rock shows. And when Dave sang with Eddie it was great. And I guess you should add that Mike Anthony sounds like ten screaming women all at once!I can't agree more with your every word on this one. Just go be in the room with a hero and a legend for awhile. I am pretty sure a good time will be had by all!
Man if I had a time machine I swear my first stop would be to see DLR during the Eat ‘em and Smile tour. It’s so disappointing the lack of footage that’s out there of that band playing live
Hey brother!! Somehow as YT usually does you popped in my feed and I started watching you about a month ago. I'm sure you've heard that a million times. You remind me so much of my former drummer and best friend. I really enjoy watching the way you speak and address things. Very respectful, witty and well spoken and gets point across without upsetting people. Hoping to pick up some of your habits honestly. I think you're fuking cool! Can you tell I'm trying to make friends LOL. As for Dave, there is no other and doubt there will ever be. I'm just honored to be alive in these times with so so many greats around us here and gone. Damn, from the 70's until now holy hell what a ride! Thanks for your efforts brother I really appreciate it.
I love David...have since the 80's..nobody else like him in rock & roll..UNIQUE💎
Dave was a great showman for 20+ years, and captured some truly amazing performances on record. Frankly tho, dude was forgetting vocals and skipping over singing lines as far back as the US Festival (maybe further but not much live VH footage before that). Whats really weird is during his 1st two solo tours, he seemed like he was making.a real effort not to do all that, singing every line, knowing all the words. But then as quick as the 91 tour , there are some really really bad live shows (see the Sweden video on youtube). From what I saw of the VH reunion stuff, plenty of it was rough as well and voices age different no matter how much you try to take care of them. God bless the guy, he gave us enough, soundtrack to my youth, I don't need to see him solo or any weird VH tribute thing and face the mismatch between my memories and what I get.
I always thought of those crazy squeals in his voice as vocal pinch harmonics. I’ve never heard anyone ever do anything remotely like it. And I think you’re right: it just be some kind of extra tissue on his chords that vibrates. And I don’t think VH would’ve been the same without those extra touches.
It's backwards singing

I love Dave. And I always will. Yeah he can’t sing the way he used to. Heck, very few of us can. Sammy Hagar is the one guy that comes to mind for me who can still belt it. But Dave was the consummate showman. One of the best frontmen ever despite not being able to sing like Plant or Mercury.

& how were the shows?
@@CodyAlushin they were great!!! It was the original lineup at the shows and so much fun 🤩
My Van Halen phase ended when keyboards became prominent with 1984 and I discovered music that was more important to me, but regardless, that golden Van Halen era, up to, but not including 1984, was monumental! He may not be Robert Plant circa 1973, but there was no better showman and front man than Diamond Dave. If he wants to perform and people will pay to see him, that's his decision. If I had a chance to see him, I'd be there.
Oh lord, give me strength
Imagine saying you are a fan of the Roth VH era but hate 1984 🤔😂
the sarcasm is so amazing. You are the perfect straight man in a comedy duo.
The ultimate character of rock n roll. Dave had a voice as present and unique as Eddie's playing did, with harmonic screams that would clip a PA and rattle an arena like you laid a guitar against a mic'd Marshall cab. He may not pierce your ears and raise the hair on the back of your neck anymore but he leaves a smile on your face when you leave as if it was 78' again. One of a kind like every member of that band and no one can ever touch what they did.
I thought he already announced he was retiring a couple of months ago? Hey, if he wants to keep performing, more power to him. Do what you love. I won't go see a lot of bands I grew up with, though. because I'd just rather remember thm the way they were in their prime. But I'm not going to slam anyone for doing what they want to do with their lives.
That's what I thought as well. Just looked it up and the official retirement date was 1/9/2022.
Well, I guess if people are auctioning off their organs and sitting in week long traffic queues to see Sir Paul (who is my all-time musical hero by the way) croak his way through a headline set at Glasto, then there’s nothing wrong with paying to see DLR shriek his way through his set. If folk are still prepared to buy tickets and turn up to concerts, then why shouldn’t the more mature musicians put the shows on for them?
Again, Justin, you are the voice of reason. Simply be thankful that our heroes are still able to give us something of themselves to bring back the old memories and create a few good new memories. When we lose our heroes, the music dies a little...celebrate and, at least, say thank you for what they have given us over the years. We love them...
Another lovely video of you! ☺️ Yes, if I had the chance, I'd go and see him perform before it'll be too late.
What's strange to me about DLR is how much worse the performances got after the ‘07 tour. He sounded great on that tour, then started singing at the very top of his range all the time which is often hard to listen too. If he just toned it back (like Coverdale) I think we could still have a rocking Diamond Dave.
He was fantastic on that initial reunion tour while (and I'm sure this will get a bit of hate) Eddie was pretty rough with his hand being messed up and being hooked on whatever meds he was on. Then the 2012 tour came and they pretty much switched places. I was disappointed in Dave when I saw them in 2013, but at least Ed was back in top form.
@@BolognaSkinBandit Exactly! We were all so excited to see EVH doing better after the 2004 fiasco (though I still had a blast at the shows I attended), but his playing elevated in 2012.
Who knows what happened in between with Roth.
@@OfficialBrandonWhite its gotta be something in his head. Like, he got pretty bad live after 1981, but imo, he turned it right back on when he went solo. As if he had something to prove again. I'd imagine he would have felt the same way on that 07 tour. Then when 2012 came around, VH was already "back" and on top so he stopped caring as much. Thats what I've always thought at least.
Dave was never a strong "live" vocalist. He had a very limited vocal range. He forgets lyrics. In his early years he was intoxicated on stage far too often. He was a great performer! Dave recently has struggled with singing. But he is still a showman and puts on a fun show. Dave is 67, it is what it is.
Aha, I commented DLR and you did a video, man of the people, love u Justin, can't wait for aus tour
Justin Hawkins! The more I hear you speak...the more I think you should be thanked for preserving music and teaching the value of loyalty to not only the musician but to the music. Thanks for weeding out the crap and educating others on what real music is and what matters. You raaaauck, n I luvs ya.
I saw him in 86 with Steve, Billy and Greg. The band was amazing and he was a pathetic clown who sang poorly.
I saw Van Halen with Sammy on the other hand a month later at the same venue. (Cow Palace SF).
They were Brilliant all the way around!
Our rock heroes are a dying breed. Either remember them as they were or remember them as they are now.
In Dave’s case. Either way is a lame memory of a pathetic clown.
I don't know if DLR can even be called a vocalist. It's an offense to other vocalists. He's a front-man and performer, absolutely. More of a one-man circus. I think back to when I saw them live in 84.... I was crushed to hear him "sing". It was horrendous and he completely fukt the whole experience. There you had EVH - the God, badass Al and the consummate all-around great free safety bassist-singer MA..... they all killed it. But then DLR comes in and just shits all over otherwise legendary music and musicianship. Awesome and irreplaceable on the records - but he's a one-man clown show live. Just horrible and embarrassing and disrespectful to the legacy of such iconic and influential music. He cheats all of us. The biggest dbag of all front-men.
Loving your YT channel Justin.
Yeah loved Dave in his earlier days with VH and despite the fact that he appears to be struggling with his vocals now, he still seems to be enjoying himself. For some reason he reminds me of Liberace when he smiles.
Justin, you truly are one of the purest humans. Much love, brother! 🤘🏼
Comment unrelated to the video: Hello Justin! Yesterday, I discovered someone on Twitter who had the fortune of having met QUEEN-->Freddie Mercury, specifically, and then followed them about for the remainder of their tour. I asked her if she listens to The Darkness, she said she'd never heard of the band, so I posted a CZcams link to Love is only a feeling, followed with reccomendations to watch the videos for I Believe In A Thing Called Love/Friday Night / All On My Own Again/With A Woman/Everybody Have A Good Time; informed her that y'all had picked up Rufus Taylor as your drummer some time ago.. I just got this reply from her:
"THANK YOU!"
Looks like you got another fan. Keep up the fantastic work, you guys are desperately needed in this batshit world.
And we love you, too, Justin! Nice one! Hit back, don't give up, good words to hear today. Thank you.
"His voice has always been fucked, now he's just old and fucked". I cannot stop laughing 😂😂😂
I saw Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath in Oxford, England back in 1978. Dimond Dave was on fire, bloody amazing, a spectacle to behold. The memory of that gig will always be with me.
I saw that same tour in 1978. Van Halen opening for Sabbath in Detroit. We took a bus down from London Canada. Both VH and Sabbath were great.
You're being very generous and kind... your mum would be proud.
I knew I liked you and your channel but now you have cemented it. "You gotta love Diamond Dave!" I agree with my whole heart!
The last show I saw before the pandemic was good to see David Lee Roth, it was Feb of 2020 and Eddie would pass that October so I was grateful to have seen him when I could. Rock on!
I respect you Justin for respecting him.
Your commentary on this vid was most hilarious!!! Well done!!! Long live rock n' roll!!! 🤘🏻
Love this CH. and love your shirt. Cheers from Bowmanville On. CA.
Excellent....Love your work
"Ain't talking bout love" is on my go to uplifting playlist, just love it 🤙🏻
Justin, you are very kind, and take the road less traveled quite often. I appreciate your positivity. The flies look for foul things to land on, but bees, they look for the flowers… be the bee!
From Skyscraper backwards is stuff of legends. Always a gift to hold.
Justin, lovely summary of Diamond Dave and the realities of getting old. He's done Vegas reviews for years, with a Mambo band of all things which were apparently "smoking". Even did a lounge act I believe. So, Diamond Dave IS Vegas, he always was. He bought the entertainment to Van Halen from the start. The lot. I was lucky enough to see them in their prime in the Finsbury Park Rainbow and it was a SHOW! DD even carried a video camera onto the stage at one point and we, the crowd, went mental. There was probably no film in that camera but we didn't care.
Thanks for being kind to Dave. Some of us are getting pretty old. I'm still playing out at 63. Glad I saw VH back in the day.
Best bar mitzvah band performance ever! Don’t stop. It’s the fun and enthusiasm that carries the day
Thank you, Justin, spot on!! 😃❣️😘
You’re right Justin. Keep Rocking Diamond Dave!!!!
Really enjoyed this.
Dude I love your attitude!!!
I was lucky enough to see Van Halen on the last tour and Dave was amazing! He will always be Diamond Dave❤ he’s got more rasp in his voice now and it works for him. I will always be a fan and supporter
In my humble opinion if an Artiste if they still sound great and put on a performance and people still want buy a ticket then crack on! At my age 55yrs alot of my favourite artists and bands have sadly gone but their music very much so lives on. I love all great music and being a big Hawkwind fan great bands can go on and on and to be honest what else could fantastic musicians do but carry on bringing joy to thousands if not millions. A great buzz for me is rediscovering great music and the memories it brings back to mind. Live on and rock on! I'm liking this channel so far, thank you. 👍👍👍👍👍👊✌️🌹.
Good video! he was always my favored singer in VH I've seen them over 15 times I had a chance to meet him back in the day when they started. In my opinion he's never care about details live but more personality and show thats who he is. If he was to get a vocal instructor and focus on the vocal support, pitch issues and timing in the song he could clean that up. He is still a legend I wouldn't retire keep doing what you love doing enjoy the ride...Rock On..*Diamond* Dave
That acoustic shred at the end was fantastic!
Your hilarious “he’s literally asking for help” that had me laughing so hard I could hardly type this out! 😂
Van Halen, Diver Down Tour, Milwaukee County Arena--August 18, 1982. Still the greatest live experience of my life.
Love Dave! Very captivating performer and the coolest voice in hard rock
Maybe it would be good idea to work with his mellow side at his age. The semi-acoustic songs he put out one by one last year or so are really good stuff.
