Let the Right One In Vs Let Me In | Face Off

  • Vampires have done pretty big business in recent times with awesome ones seen in True Blood who like to screw, fight and drink blood to the not-so-awesome ones who sparkle in the sun like diamonds… ugh. One thing is certain though whether you're a fangbanger or not - vamps aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon. What We Do in the Shadows continues to be a hysterical TV adaptation of the equally hilarious movie, niche arthouse films such as A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night bring a fresh, exciting take on vampire lore, and even Spider-Man’s best friend Ned is now Reginald the Vampire. And don’t get us started on Morbius.
In 2008, however, Swedish film director Tomas Alfredson thrust himself on the vampire scene with his widely praised film adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s 2004 vampire novel Let The Right One In. Alfredson’s wonderfully atmospheric film of the same name managed to keep the traditional vampire lore so well-known across popular culture while providing a novel spin on some of its codes and conventions as well as taking a beautiful look at pre-teen relationships and emotions.
Two years later, Cloverfield director and future Batman helmer Matt Reeves remade the film, keeping the tone of the movie very similar to both the original film and the source material, and retaining the same story beats as the Swedish original. Reeves would claim that his film was more of an adaptation of the novel rather than a remake of the movie, yet it’s a very faithful adaptation of both and proves that sometimes American remakes of much-loved foreign horror movies actually do work. We’re looking at you The Wicker Man! So let’s sink our teeth into this eerie edition of… FACE OFF!
This episode of Face-Off is written by Adam Walton, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Adam Walton. But don’t let us have the final word - tell us in the comments which arthouse vampire flick is your pick. Let the Right One In or Let Me In?

Let The Right One In is an infinitely superior version. Let Me In isn't necessarily a bad movie, just a completely unnecessary one. It didn't need to exist and shows the difference in why both were created. The Swedish version clearly took it's time and didn't find the slower pace a hindrance. The lack of traditional "action" for a "horror" movie wasn't a weakness and its sparse use made it feel more impactful and meaningful.. Compare that to the US version and they didn't want to bore the audience in the first few minutes by putting the police time skip scene in thinking we wouldn't be interested in staying to watch if it started off with the cold slow opening sequence with Oskar/Owen.

Let the Right One In is a much better film than the remake. Both alter from the short novel, but the original film adaptation creates a tied loop which gives the impression that the vampire lives through cycles of “familiars”. It’s creepy, moving, lonely and tragic. A very good film and the American remake pales in comparison.

I can’t agree with direction. The cool tones of the original are so much more beautiful and deep than the washed out super lights of the remake. The monotone delivery in the remake by Eli is clearly a directing choice, while the original has Eli showing much more depth of emotion. Lastly, the original had a greater subtext as Eli seemed like a good person trapped doing evil, while Oscar seemed to have more actual capacity for violence. This contrasts with the remake where the vampire is clearly an evil manipulator looking for a new servant.

  • @HorrorMetalMaestroRedrusty66

I really enjoy the remake, but it could never touch the original, the dirty dealings of the director (Cutting out the reveal, trying to create a public backstory for "Abby" to erase the fact it was a boy ect, ect) was so typically "American" , an audience that almost demands a dumbing down for mainstream profit. Even that aside, the fact it isn't really made point of in the film means you can watch it KNOWING the truth and pretty much nothing is said to contradict it in the film itself, so I do love Let Me In. Let The Right One In however is masterpiece that can't be touched and one of, if not the, best Vamp flick ever made.

I don't think North America audiences would relate to the original in the same way as they never lived it, in that era in Europe.
They used areas of Sweden that was unchanged from that era, and even using small stickers, communism etc. And the harsh/different times of Scandinavia before it changed. To draw you back to a different time. Even the hair-cuts are on point. Just my thoughts why it was made.
