    this thing has a wonderful tone.. liked it most on the drums and base . but as mentioned before... keeping the level the same is very important to judge what the compressor really does.

    Hard to tell if it sounds better because it’s louder, but it’s Neve so I know it’s better sounding and louder. I say it’s “twenty-two fifty-four”

  • @alf3k1
    @alf3k1 Před 6 lety +31

    Just the same problem like in all of your videos, you need to GAIN MATCH the A/B, otherwise the louder part sounds ALWAYS better!

    It's very easy to hear how gorgeous it sounds, even with the levels not matched perfectly. The sound is in the knee. You did make an adjustment that 1:23 that helped with levels though not quite a volume match. As you noted, compressor sound has tons of character compared to the limiter, so that's a good way to hear what it's doing to the sound. After watching a few of your videos with expensive gear, I'd like to hear some comparisons with less expensive analog gear. Do we just love analog, or are these instruments that much better? Hm.

      The limiter has a harder knee than the compressor also they happen simultaneously and then the sum comes out the exit that’s why this thing sounds so damn good

    To my experience there's a lot of cult and myth about compressors. So let my add my "cult", Being a Bass player theres's one favourite compressor which make helps to make a Bass (even a 5-string) loud without making it boomy: The good old DBX 163, see dbxpro.com/en/products/163 --- and it just had one slider, so even the drunk local "sound engineer" could use it. Source: 20 years of on stage experience.

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  Před 5 lety +5

      If mixing was all about level matching, then a finished mix would be as loud as your SM58 output :-) I think people should learn to hear past level changes, otherwise you’re in a constant state of scientific testing, instead of mixing! And besides if you’re going to crank down on that L2 anyway at the end of the mix, thrn you might use a nice piece of gear like this to get some level going!!!

    It's just a shame the fastest recovery is 400ms, that's pretty much the slowest I would go. The 800ms and 1500ms are pretty much unsuable, I wish they had 100ms and 200ms like the 33609 has.

    Nice compressor with very impressive character just by passing through the sound.
    However, a stereo image of sound is disturbed. It is a device with large individual difference.
    Not particularly interested in the limiter module, a software limiter is better as usual.

    • @jameslong289
      @jameslong289 Před 6 lety +3

      @Afrom ham, You have to factor in that most top mix engineers are using source material that's been recorded on consoles. So even if they do "mix" with plugins, you most likely won't get the same results sonically as the Pros unless your source material has also been summoned on analog gear. Not to mention the final product that you'll end up hearing (Album, radio, youtube, etc...) will be that of the mastering engineer who will most likely end up using a few analog pieces even if the person who mixed it didn't.
