    I’m really sold on this eq. However many things sound better when they are louder. Would have liked to have seen you trim down to try to match levels pre and post processing. But no doubt this is an amazing eq. Very ‘active’.

    Great demonstration! I'm looking at getting a versatile eq and this is at the top of my list. I'd like to mainly have it across my 2 buss. Is this versatile enough to cover all genres? Hows it handle dance music, music with lots of bass and sharp transients? That's my biggest concern as I've read it may not be the best eq for that. Cheers!

    @Punkdebutique Před 6 lety +1

    How does this compare with the Manley Massive Passive?

    • @johnnymassacre
      @johnnymassacre Před 5 lety +3

      I have both. Totally, totally different. The Massive Passive is ridiculous for mastering. I can make anything sound enhanced. The saturation and high end sounds "like a record". The Curve Bender is all about how much you drive it. It's almost like a distortion box. I am not a fan of its high end, I usually can't get anything to sound better (as far as mastering goes) with the Curve Bender on the top end. The Curve Bender, though, is all about warmth, tone and personality. It's all about the mid and low sections. And here it sounds unique. It has a kind of gooey thunk to it, and gives audio personality and loads of character. I'd say the Massive Passive is suited for mastering and bass processing, and the Curve Bender is suited to colouring things in a way software just can't that'll make you stand out from the competition.

  • @doedsstierna
    @doedsstierna Před 9 lety +1

    When you use the eq to add, A/B-testing by switching in/out doesn't tell you anything about what you are really doing because the two signals you are comparing are not level matched. EQ in will be louder and therefore almost always sound "better" than out. This is a classic newbie mistake and an amateurish approach to eq-ing.

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  Před 9 lety +5

      Hi Tobias! Thanks for your comment. I don't agree that you should level match with an EQ. Let me give you an example: you want to give some vocals more mid range because they don't cut through a mix, so you go on and push 1.5k by 3db with a wide Q. Now you have more mids and a bit more level. What happens if you pull down the output by 1.5db to compensate? What really happens is that you pull down all of the other frequencies by 1.5 db and you let the mid range push through just by 1.5db more, changing the relationship between the vocals and the rest of the mix! So your correction is now gives you a new set of problems! Do you see what I mean? Level matching when A/Bing a compression can be useful (although in real mixing life is not the most important thing)... but I'd never do it on EQ! Hope this helps.

    • @mrnorbotron3308
      @mrnorbotron3308 Před 9 lety

      Doctor Mix The overall-level must be matched, wich is in this video not. The in-signal is clearly louder I think Tobias is right. But anyway, what an outstanding eq! Great video!

    • @DevAvidon
      @DevAvidon Před 8 lety

      +Doctor Mix Firstly, let me say that I find your videos incredibly valuable, and I'm grateful for the resources you graciously and continuously provide. Your engineering acumen is clearly at a high level. However, I don't think that your explanation as to why gain matching for the purpose of a comparison isn't useful vis-a-vie EQ makes sense. The total energy as defined as SPL for all frequencies is constantly being attenuated in all playback scenarios. That's the entire nature of a volume control. Whether I'm lowering the gain of the track itself or attenuating the volume (leaving aside the inherent advantages or disadvantages of one method of attenuation vs another), the end result is essentially the same. I'm not pulling down all the other frequencies by 1.5db if I trim the gain by 1.5, I'm pulling down all frequencies including the one I just boosted. The relative relationship should stay identical. I won't belabor the point as to why gain-matched comparisons are valuable in real-time A/Bs, as that's a well-worn argument at this point, but I certainly don't think it's not technically possible to achieve meaningful gain matching for EQ.

    • @Doctormix
      @Doctormix  Před 8 lety +6

      +Dev Avidon +MrNorbotron +Tobias Eklund Hi Dev, I'm sure we can speculate on the mathematics of it forever ;-) But in real mixing and mastering life you just reach the EQ knob to either correct or enhance the sound. And touching this or that frequency on a machine like this is not just a matter of changing dBs of level here and there. EQs of this kind have a sound and they are so expensive because that sound is personal and special. Level matching might be a more legitimate technique for compression, but with EQ? EQ is just EQ. Even raising the level by using a good preamp is a legitimate mixing technique. If it was only a case of louder-sounds-better and nothing else then we wouldn't need any gear, just a volume knob. In my humble, humble opinion, I think you should try to hear past the change in level and understand how the harmonic content and texture changes. It's very subtle... but mixing and mastering are amazingly subtle actions. In other words: there is louder and louder, and you can't rely on scientific A/B to understand the difference. It's music and I always try to use my musical mind, which I suspect is the n.1 reason why our mixing & mastering service is so successful. God I love talking about audio!!!
