Guys where am I? I think I'm lost... Oh hey there! Sorry I was just a little dazed and confused for a second. I enjoyed this movie and wanted to sit down and just chill with most of the characters on screen! I also finally found out where "alright alright alright" comes from and it was so satisfying!
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

Being a bit older now, it’s crazy to think that this movie was portraying a time 17 years earlier. In ‘93, that seemed a fairly long time ago. A movie made now would be portraying the year 2005, which, to my old self, feels like just a few weeks ago.

    • @kyleshockley1573
      @kyleshockley1573 Před rokem +6

Depending on what you look at, the amount of change between '76 and '93 was really noticeable, vs. 2005 and 2022. Putting aside social or cultural issues, besides smart phones, streaming media, thinner or smaller tech, EVs and the look of websites, what else feels all that different from the mid 2000's? Compared to the difference in film tech, special FX, music sound quality and genres, fashion and hair styles, or even just computers, the change from the 70's to 90's was pretty adventurous with some big leaps and bounds inbetween. A lot was mainstreamed and then fell out for the next trend that defined several years or a decade.
But from the early 2000's on?... Eh, besides the weird attempts to mimic cyberpunk and to rearrange genres from the past, there really isn't all that much innovation in terms of how the decades can be defined aesthetically. So no surprise a lot of western culture from then feels like it was just around the corner.

My favorite movie of all time. I've seen it like 500 times and at one point could recite it from memory.
I was definitely the Slater of my high school.
The main cast are rising seniors, not graduated. and mitch etc are 8th graders going into 9th
There's a drinking game with this movie where you take a shot every time Mitch touches his face.
Mike and Clint were both guest stars on Friends.

Far out, feel good movie. I live in Austin and it never fails to bring a smile to my face when I'm driving around and recognize another film location. The Top Notch on Burnet is still there and there's a little shrine to the movie inside with one of the paddles and some other memorabilia. Oh, and i'm not sure about the school structure. Most Texas schools had high schools that were 9th through 12th grade. The film mentions middle school and that might have been a school system that had 1st through 5th or 6th in elementary, 6th or7th through 9th in middle school and then 10th through 12th in High School. This was the structure when I transferred in 9th Grade from a High School in Arizona to 9th Grade in a middle school in Texas between semesters. Also, i have a Summer birthday and was one of the youngest in my class usually so there's a chance that she could have been 15 and the senior guy was 17. But it wasn't unusual at all when I was growing up to see freshmen girls dating juniors or seniors.

This brilliant film is simultaneously one of my favourite: 90's movies, movies set in the 70's, music movies, drug movies, coming-of-age comedies, and a general favourite overall.
Excellent writing, a stellar cast, and arguably the greatest soundtrack in Cinematic History.

My first memory of watching this film was with my brother soon after it came out. We sat huddled around a 6" mini TV in the middle of our dodge caravan, while our parents drove us through the night on the way to Alabama from Wisconsin for Easter beak. My dad had recorded this movie on a mini hi-8 tape and bought a 6" travel T.V. (which he returned after our vacation😉) to watch movies on. The blue light from the mini tv lit up the inside of our van while it charged on through the night; my brother and I howling with laughter. Those moments are the important ones...
F-ing great film. You should contiue with it's sister films....FAST TIMES AT RIDGMONT HIGH - 80'S and AMERICAN GRAFFITI - 60's....(by a little fellow named George Lucas).

I was a kid in the 70’s. The clothes were like that, smaller town schools sometimes have these hazing rituals to designate who is in and who isn’t, and the teen outdoor keg/ smoking parties were pretty common. I happened upon my share of them at a local park near our K-8 school and my house around ‘78-‘80.

When Afleck's character, O'Banyon(?) Is pranked and slammed his paddle down, breaking it... he also shattered his ankle in reality. He drove off in angry (acting) shock (reality)...

You picked a great one, Ollie! I love this movie. I remember 1976... the Bicentennial of the USA. You couldn't buy anything that year unless it was red, white, and blue. IIRC, that's also the year schools tried switching us over to the Metric system. That did not go over well during such a patriotic time. "We refuse to bow to a foreign ruler!" was the line of the year.
I'm sure you're going to have questions, and I'll have some answers about that time period, since I was 9 years old that year (well, most of it, anyway... I was born in February of 1967). Also, remember, this was before Star Wars came out. It was actually being filmed that year, but we had no idea of what was coming in the summer of '77.
So, let's watch this, and see what I can tell you about the US in 1976.
1:15 - Yes, Matthew McConnahay (however you spell it) IS in this, and it's his first role. In fact, the part was originally a lot smaller, but upon seeing how well he was doing, his character was expanded upon. You'll also notice a very young Ben Afleck. I'm not sure if this was his first role or not, but it was definitely early in his career. Him and Joey Lauren Adams would go on to star in Chasing Amy, and both would be cast in other Kevin Smith movies. Now that's a "universe" you should delve into.... the order of the "View Askewniverse" (as it's called) is: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and most recently, Clerks III. I hear that there's another Mallrats movie coming, but info is scarce on that. Each of these movies are tied together, share characters, and reference events from each other.
(I'm going to save this comment at this point... because cats are running loose in here)
Edit: 2:20 - Oh, yeah. This movie has a banging soundtrack. All of it from that time period, too.
2:45 - I was still in elementary school in '76. But when I did get to high school in '84, I was a drinker, I was not into drugs. Alcohol was my thing. Also, I was well known in chorus. Sophomore year I was in the Men's chorus, Junior year I was in the Men's chorus, Mixed chorus, and the Honour's chorus (Chamber Singers). In my Senior year ('85-'86), I was in all 4 available chorus classes. I have lots of great memories of those years.
3:57 - Yep. You could get away with stuff like that back then.
4:55 - Yeah.... the "hazing" rituals... these were a thing is many locations. The ones we went through weren't as bad as what you see in this movie, though. But like I said, you could get away with that kind of shit back then. Also, no permanent damage was done to anyone, which is why it was "overlooked" by the authority figures. Well, that and Generation X was pretty well ignored unless someone's life was actually in danger.
6:06 - That's how they showed their dominance over those smaller than them. Yes, that kind of thing went on often. Which is why jocks were considered assholes.
6:40 - Yeah, well, you're Canadian, right? That was a US thing, to trash the school on the last day. It was a sign of rebellion against authority, which is deeply rooted in US culture.
7:30 - Like I said, it was the 70s... you could get away with shit back then. Shit that would never fly today.
9:32 - IIRC, there was a maximum age difference of 4 years, so 14-18. Although, Afleck's character failed his senior year, so he gets to do the ritual a second time. So he would actually be 5 years older than the incoming Freshmen. And no, back then, High School was grades 9-12.
10:58 - Yeah, they stole statues of the Founding Fathers from somewhere, and painted them as KISS.
11:09 - Also, the drinking age back then was 18. I was 17 when they the government decided to up it to 21. Not that it REALLY matter to me, I was able to get it anyway.
13:00 - I don't know if you caught it or not, but Randy Floyd's nickname is "Pink", because Pink Floyd was in their heyday at the time. It was a not-so-subtle nod to both the band, and the drug culture that surrounded them and their music.
Also, "Pink" was a pretty chill dude, as you did note. He was right, too.... by Mitch showing up, he was accepted as one of the "cool kids", by showing that the "beating" he endured didn't mean he automatically hated those who did it to him. Mitch was initiated, and passed the test. Hence why he was accepted by the older group.
14:20 - Yeah, the "Sniffing Butt Stage" meant the introduction, but no further. Like, instantly turned down for any dating possibility.
14:35 - "Make out room".... yeah, that was a thing. Because it was assumed it would go no further than just making out.
15:25 - Exactly. That's how they would tell if he was "cool" or not.
18:02 - Yes, it actually IS a felony to interfere with the delivery of mail, which does include destroying a mailbox. Of course, that's if you do it intentionally. An accident won't net you the felony charges, though.
18:28 - Notice both the price of cigarettes back then ($0.60/pack). Also, back then, your parents or another adult could sent an "underage" person to the store to buy them both cigarettes and alcohol. Usually with a note stating that it was for an adult. I know this for a fact, because I made money doing that for old people in the neighborhood, who didn't want to walk to the nearest store.
18:36 - Notice how Mitch is playing this cool. He wasn't asked for an actual ID, but just asked to confirm that he was 18. That's how loose the restrictions were back then. You could tell them you're 18 if you were close to it, or have a note if you were buying for someone else.
21:25 - No, actually he's right. Backing down and looking weak WILL haunt you for years. Yes, I know from experience.
21:54 - We call that "White Girl Wasted". LMAO!
23:40 - Actually, no. It's better to lose the fight than to run in fear of the fight. Losing a fight isn't fun, but at least it showed that he was willing to stand up for himself. You actually get in less fights that way.
26:17 - Interesting... you say that Sabrina is too young for Tony, but not that Mitch is too young for the senior he's with. Little double standard there, Ollie? (heh)

Richard Linklater wanted to make a film about being young in the seventies. He himself had experienced the time as horror and humiliation. He could not imagine that many viewers would not feel pity for the abused, but would take pleasure in the scenes of abuse. Fantastic reaction, to one of my favorite movies of the 90s! Right from the intro, with you rocking out to Aerosmith, I knew we were in good hands! And I LOVE it when reactors do movies THEY want to do, rather than only do poll-winners. EXCELLENT CHOICE. Dude: this movie is EXACTLY how I remember 1976, it's like taking a time machine. And if you like this movie, you have to see it's cousin: George Lucas' first (and best, imo) blockbuster hit: "American Graffiti" (1973), which takes place last night of the summer, 1962! Basically it's like the 1950s version of "Dazed And Confused"! Both movies are like slicing a night out of teenage history and putting it right on screen! And the cultural differences between the two movies just show how much changed in just a decade: the 60s, the elephant in the room for both movies. Like "Dazed And Confused", "American Graffiti" is wall-to-wall amazing soundtrack, fantastic cars, great cinematography and stacked with a cast of then-unknowns ( who all went on to become famous). DEFINITELY check out "American Graffiti" if you like THIS movie. You would do a fantastic reaction for that one, just as you did this one! THANKS!!!!! A total surprise!!!!!!

Great Review, Another good move to review would be Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Similar but 80's mall culture, which was also a thing for me growing up.
I was a kid in the 70's and started high school in 82. I can relate to Mitch most, I think it's just because I was close to his age in the late 70's and I grew up playing baseball on teams. The jocks took me in, in eight grade because I started playing tackle football and I had to stay after for practice and didn't have a ride home, Also the first time I smoked a joint, between 8th and 9th grade in the back of car a lot like that one. I was about as ready for it as Mitch. Like OK, if they are why not. By 9th grade I was on varsity baseball and football. Senior year I dropped out of sports completely and joined a band. (I didn't get any more chicks, not any less either) LOL
Ticked my team-mates off but my band was pretty good so after playing a couple parties we were all cool again. I did end up in one fight over it, our quarterback, I kicked his ass in front of a crowd of people, including my Dad who dumped a beer on a security guard who wouldn't let him carry his beer outside to watch. (summer country music pavilion, we took it outside, as we still did back then.) Didn't feel bad one bit, he wasn't a "Pink" he was an O'Bannon, complete with him having to repeat his Senior year.
Slater, that was my buddy Greg (RIP) Nadine was the stoner, still is. Tracy and Tina were two party girls that were never far from our side, they both got married young and are still married, same for me actually. I could go through the whole list of characters. LOL
We didn't have a hazing ritual but we had LOTS of parties, lot's of cruising, Hell Night was WILD, our poor School Principle lived in town, his house got nailed every year.
I had a 1980 GMC Pickup, I put slicks on it so I could light up the tires when I was cruising. Got pulled over 12 times one summer and never got a ticket even though I always had beer on me, That's How Chill it was. We liked most of the cops and the ones we didn't like we fucked with, we did it one too many times and they got mad then busted our senior party and almost my entire class got tickets for being in possession of alcohol. My hometown didn't even have cops, they had to come from the next town over, my buddy Greg started a war with them, actually. The week before they busted us we threw a fake party in the woods and called it in to the police as a disturbance, so they would come break it up. Once they got back in the woods we cuts down trees and blocked them in and then threw a party across the county line. So they took revenge and bused our Senior Skip Party, first time they ever handed out tickets, the fine was $35, before that they always gave us warnings. I was actually the Only one who didn't get a ticket in my entire class, that's why it was Almost the whole class, I was the exception. I had to work after school and was saving up for JC, I had a full time job, to pay for the truck and beer too of course. If they had waited another hour they would have gotten me too.
Thanks for the review, brings back some great memories.

Richard Linklater....sure you know him. Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. Also Boyhood, which if you haven't seen I highly recommend. :)
Ah: 36:00 you mentioned the Linklater connection to your other vids. :)

The elementary went to gr. 7 and they were entering Hihgschool into gr. 8, whereas the older kids where going from gr. 11 to gr 12. So the blonde guy and the young girl is ocnsidered 'ok'. The guy would be as young 16 still and she as young as 12, based on their Bday's being in the Fall after classes started. So, ya little creepy, tho it happens ALL the time.

Lol, I know you did a reaction to Empire Records. I'm surprised you didn't recognize Slater. He also played Lucus in Empire Records. The blonde, Simone was supposed to be Pink's girlfriend. I guess some people don't really catch that even though they are shown together, They get kind of confused because he flirts and makes out with Jody (Mitch's sister). Ok, I went to school in the 90s at the time when junior highs were switched to middle schools, so 6th grade is now lumped in with 7th and 8 graders. High school has always been 9th grade through 12th though, so Sabrina who is entering high school would probably be about 14 yrs old and Tony who is going into his senior year is probably about 17.

Jason London was so good in this. I wish his career would have had a better projection than it did! I can assure you the hazing was real, lol. Even in the 80's when I was in school.

"All right, all right, all right."
Fun Fact: The word "man" is said 203 times in this movie.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Reportedly one-sixth of the budget was spent on acquiring the rights to all of the 1970s pop hits on the soundtrack.
Location Location Fact: The infamous hazing scene was shot at the old Americana Theater (out of operation at the time) located at 2200 Hancock Drive, just off Burnet Road in Austin, Texas. It is now the Yarborough Branch of the city library, but still retains some of the original exteriors and signs from this movie's era.
On Set Fighting Fact: Shawn Andrews and Jason London did not get along during filming. At one point, Richard Linklater had to break up a fight between them. It changed the ending, which was going to feature Pickford (Shawn Andrews) instead of Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey). It also explains their almost total lack of dialogue despite sharing several scenes.

david ...The Dude says "man" 147 times in The Big Lebowski (1998), but I don't have a count of others. However I'm going to give the edge to this movie.

It’s weird how you found the blonde guy and girl to be weird but not wooderson trying to get with the red head. Since the blonde guy is supposed to be between 16/17 and the girl is supposed to be 13/14. Which isn’t too weird compared to the red head who is supposed to be 16/17 and Wooderson who is supposed to be in his early to mid twenties.

This was so great and since it was made in the 90s. I can confirm that this was exactly like how it was high school in the 1990s. And I'm glad you didn't think too much of the hazing cuz some people can be so Sissy about it. And I think it was okay to go out with that younger girl she seemed mature at least. I use to date Frenchman we all dates eachother. Seniors are still young. No big deal. Freshman through seniors all basically grew up together all through school. They both were pretty mature. I'm glad you didn't judge it too hard it was all in the name of fun. (Although i think you shouldn't listen to the critics at all. They dont get it. They do judge it to harshly. Judge by your own terms.) And have fun.
