    Akhmatkhuzin was probably the fencer with the most "classical" style on the circuit before he retired, who do you think holds the title now?

    Some great hits by the Russian in here. In general, the French fencer was doing a lot of circular blade motion, and Akhmatkhuzin was just avoiding the blade contact and hitting him with straight counterattacks.
    I also really like the circle-parry into the transfer all the way under at 0:52, and the feint to 4, cutover/disengage to 8 at 3:43. I'm gonna try both of those in class next week! Thanks for posting.

      Agreed! 0:52 in particular is incredible incredible incredible

    Helissey was mentally and spiritually broken (in in almost all cases like this, by himself). Self-doubt, reinforcing feedback from one mistake leads to greater mistakes.... been there. It's tough to crawl out of it, especially in the biggest competition venue in the world.

    still sad moment for Zherebchenko though. He was there watching the fire but couldn't participate in said fire

    • @christianalbertjahns2577
      @christianalbertjahns2577 Před 3 lety +6

      @Kali Tolles because the team decided that Zherebchenko wouldn't fence. Since Zherebchenko didn't fence in the entirety of the competition, he didn't receive the medal. Good thing for him though, he won the gold medal at men's individual foil's world championships (essentially a bit lesser Olympic that is held annually) the next year.

    There must've been an awkward conversation during the after party for the french team ...

    Sad reason why they played JPTH, because if he hadn't fenced that day, we wouldn't have gotten a medal

    • @christianalbertjahns2577
      @christianalbertjahns2577 Před 3 lety +5

      Well probably to give him an Olympic medal since he needed to fence to get a medal. That's why Zherebchenko (Russian reserve) didn't get the gold since he never fenced in that competition.

    • @christianalbertjahns2577
      @christianalbertjahns2577 Před 3 lety +3

      Anyway I am quite surprised that they chose Tony-Helissey as reserve rather than, say, Mertine, their reserve in 2015 World Championships

      @@christianalbertjahns2577 he beat race that season and was strong at every comp up to this. ( he also had two bouts go 14-15 with race if im not mistaken)

    so Akhmatkhuzin retired for medical reason?

    • @OlympicFoil
      @OlympicFoil  Před 3 lety +6

      I believe so, he did have both his hips replaced in 2014, so despite his fencing skill being fine as you can see after the operations, it was probably a good idea to retire at (I think) 28 years old. Avoid the risk of severe problems developing!
