  • Isaac Bashevis Singer once claimed that since Yiddish was a stateless language, it possesses no words for weapons or ammunition. Here, a soldier named Yonatan, proves him wrong.

This video made me feel odd. So casual and friendly with the war machine. I guess it just reflects reality for a lot of people who live with war machines, a reality I have been shielded from.
The forverts has been a confusing place lately, but in many cases safer and more human than other publications. Complex. Nuanced.
I guess this video does not quite feel like that.
Learned and enunciated stage yiddish in combination with the physical realities of war just feels absurd. Smiling, handsome israelis in uniform are a dime a dozen, but the use of yiddish makes it harder for my heart to dismiss and makes it sink like a stone.
Life was easier when I was able to be a wholehearted pacifist. I hope I‘ll never have to become as comfortable with a rocket as these guys.
My heart sinks and falls and shatters.
    Good luck!

Sholem oleykhem, in Yiddish thé expression "nem avek" means put it away, so thé seargant ordered to his onloader to lay back thé grenade to thé stock cuz this is only a "demonstratsiya" what he calls a "kourts erklerunk", meaning only a démonstration serving as short explanation. 😅
Their duty is not to spoil taxmoney, so they only make noise after finding a tunnelissue to close by shooting a grenade into thé tunnel.
      BTW:
If they would "make a sound", for sure they would put on their ear protectors... Or have you ever seen a tankcrew making a sound without earprotectors on their heads? 😂

Thé expression a "kleyns fayerl ven men tapt" is pure humour, a yiddishr vits, cuz it would not be a lil fire, it would make a big bang sound, louder than non-tankers can even imagine...😅

My motivation for learning Yiddish stemmed partly from the fact that, unlike German, it had not - and by definition could not - be soiled by the national socialist episode. This idea mentioned above, attributed to Isaac Bashevis Singer, that Yiddish lacked a word for weapons because it is a stateless language, is actually a very beautiful one. Unfortunately, the only point you are proving here is that nation-states are a deadly poison, they only lead to war and death.
