An Introduction to Quadrobics

  • Quadrobics: The art of dropping down on all fours and walking, trotting, running, jumping, and generally having a great time. I especially enjoy seeing others attempting to do it on my college campus not long after I’ve sped through.
I do not recommend doing an entire shoot in such a short span of time. Running back and forth across a track for an hour is exhausting!
    Disclaimer:
You should understand that when participating in any exercise or exercise program, there is the possibility of physical injury. If you engage in this exercise or exercise program, you agree that you do so at your own risk, are voluntarily participating in these activities, and assume all risk of injury to yourself.
    Warning:
Quadrobics can be hard on the wrists depending on your size, weight, wrist strength, and wrist flexibility. Though your wrist strength and flexibility will improve over time, be careful when running across hard surfaces when you’re just starting out. (I suggest grass as your choice of terrain, though beware of cuts from the grass blades when running without gloves! Always wash your hands afterwards to take the sting out before it has time to set in.)
I have worked mainly with young, healthy individuals while performing this exercise, so be aware of your own limitations. Previous injuries in the back, neck, elbow, and wrist areas may prevent you from performing this exercise to the best of your ability.

To the recent influx of traffic, greetings! FAQ available below for the curious, and I hope everyone is safe and well. If you wish to try this at home, please restrain yourself to a walk or trot unless you have enough space to not ram headfirst into walls or furniture.
This video is going on five years old now and the entire shoot took an hour of run time so I might have the best, clearest angles for each scene to choose from. Everyone is more than welcome to point out flaws in any of the above forms for educational purposes, but do not comment with the intent to correct my forms personally. I am well aware of the flaws in the footage. The purpose of this video was to quickly and accurately provide an introduction to a sport many were wholly unaware of, and if perfection had been the goal, it would have been shot over a series of days rather than in an hour and a half. Given how we’re all here five years later, it has served its purpose well.
    --*FAQ*
*Q: What is the purpose of this?*
A: What is the purpose of any sport? To exercise, to improve flexibility and strength, to have fun, to show off, to de-stress; we all have our reasons. What are yours?
    *Q: Do I need gloves?*
A: No. Gloves simply provide hand protection and are recommended when performing quadrobics outdoors. (Any pair of sturdy cloth gloves or gardening gloves will do!)
    *Q: Tips for beginners?*
    1. The same principles that apply to any form of exercise - from football to jogging - apply here: Maintain a healthy diet, intake the proper amount of water, and practice! Improvement comes with time.
    2. Keep your back relatively level when at a standstill. While in-stride the angle will shift up and down, which is perfectly normal. It is the body in motion rather than the backside going up and down by itself. (The length of your arms will determine how far your knees will be required to bend in order to level out your back.)
    3. Exercise in several short stints rather than all at once. You will progress more quickly and have more energy to run and play as you go!
    4. Proper walking with a level back is the most intensive and draining of all forms, yet the easiest on the body. If you want to power train or simply keep yourself safe, walking is for you!
*Q: How do I get my back to stay level?*
A: Overtraining your spine to sink downwards rather than hunch over while walking is one way to help it acclimate to the new orientation. While straight is the goal, bear in mind "straight" is a relative term! Your back shouldn't be hunched nor ramrod straight, but instead allow for the freedom of movement necessary for extending and contracting along with your stride.
*Q: How do I begin jumping?*
A: When you are confident in your stride and your wrists are sufficiently strengthened with practice, you may attempt your first jump. First, check that you have at least six feet beyond the jump so you have the time and space to stop safely. Second, don’t jump in crowded spaces or slippery surfaces. Only when conditions are safe may you proceed.
Choose a short, flat item - such as a ruler or book - as your hurdle. When jumping, your hands must be the first to leave the ground and the first to touch the ground upon landing. Practice extensively before moving on to longer or higher jumps.
Remember, it’s not a jump unless all your limbs are off the ground!
*Q: Quadrobics is painful / My progress is slow. When will I improve?*
A: It depends entirely on each individual's health, weight, fitness, and prior medical conditions. There is no set rate at which you will progress. Practice slow and easy so your body can grow stronger and more flexible with the activity.
As a rule, the larger and heavier one is, the more careful he/she should be. You can be the toughest athlete in the world and still break a wrist on impact if the wrist hasn't been fortified through training as well!
*Q: Is quadrobics bad for your health over time?*
A: Aside from the possibility of injury inherent to any sport, there is no current proof that quadrobics is harmful to the human body. From personal experience I can report a beautifully healthy spine, great flexibility, sturdy wrists, and precise strength and control of my weight. Quadrobics has prevented me from sustaining injuries that would have afflicted anyone else in my position due to the rare and unusual ways my body is strong.
*Q: How will I know if I’m doing quadrobics right?*
A: If you’re enjoying the exercise, you’re doing it right! As a sport of many forms, there is no true “right” nor “wrong” to quadrobics. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it- and don’t let anyone to tell you otherwise.
In the end, everyone’s argument is wrong. Don't waste time on the debates when you can be out having fun~

I have a question. Does quadrobics shrink your boobs and gain you a bigger butt? That would be a bonus if this was true
      Edit:
Odd people go wtf, and that's sus when it's a simple and legit question. I guess because the majority are children and are not arsed about the things I mention above it's sus to them but they are stupid lol.
I was asking because my chest is too big and I hate it and I wish to find any way I can to shrink it if possible.
It's exercise so the answer to my question is that it would help me lose weight by running on all fours and therefore would shrink every part of my body.
Anyway f you all who think it's a sus question when it's a legitimate seeking of knowledge and practical advice and sorry to say but f the auther who ignore me 😂🤣😂🤔😂🤔
      Peace out muthafuckas

I used to do this a lot when I was little, and the last time I ever did it was in highschool when my anthropology teacher took everyone out in the hallway to have a four legged race because we were studying feral children. Because I easily beat someone the teacher went up against me himself, and just barely beat me for having longer legs than me (and being more fit). He made a joke about how coordinated I was then got the whole class to laugh at me. He was "that" kind of highschool teacher, the one who liked to cozy up to the popular kids and turn a nose up at the "weird" kids. Man that was like a decade ago, but I'll never forget how that felt (and how I felt sore all over after for being out of shape lol).
tbh I do still wish I had a quiet place where I could fool around and just do this like I used to as a kid, there's nothing else that really compels me to exercise these days. I also have always wanted to see someone develop specialized gloves for this kind of activity, ones that would protect your hands as well as elevate your upper body to ease the strain on your neck and back. I was thinking it could be like whatever materials and methods they use to make hockey gloves? And shaped so your hands on the inside are curled into a fist. Running like this and putting all the pressure on your fingers never seemed like a good idea to me.

    • @iridescent7816
      @iridescent7816  Před 7 lety +68

That is unfortunate to hear! I cannot say I understand the feeling (I have always been a charismatic individual and that prompted others to take my lead rather than attempt to put me down), but it saddens me to hear that it happened to you. I hope that you did not let it stunt your personal growth.
The force of your body's weight should transfer down your arm into the palm of your hands, not into your fingers. (I imagine that would not end well haha.) As for developing gloves that would lengthen the reach of your arms, as interesting a concept they are, I wouldn't recommend them if they did exist. I trust my body more than any tool or technology, and becoming dependent on special gloves would limit my ability to perform quadrobics whenever I wanted if I didn't carry them around everywhere. If the exercise is done properly (and the individual in proper shape), there is no strain on the neck or back.

Since we are not really designed for this movement of transportation (due to our legs being longer then our arms) the best way to do this without injuring your back and having your ass in the air looking silly. Is to make your legs wider apart and just bend your legs more using the front pads of your feet not full foot, kinda like tip toe. Definitely takes a lot of upper body strength and flexibility in the hamstrings. I think it's interesting how the fast trot resembles a primate. They figured it out, we just forgot. Also, our limbs are extra long now so a lot of the moves involved coordinating a dominant limb and keeping the other one out of the way. Excellent video, Ive watched this one at least a dozen times. I envy your skill at this. I cant get the speed you can, and my run is much more like a chimp run, I thought the correct way to run was to do a pattern like "right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot" ,but you look like both of your hands come out at the same time, and you seem pretty squared forward. Do you lead with a particular side/hand? Also do you feel training everyday is better, or should you include rest days to give the joints time to recuperate?

    • @iridescent7816
      @iridescent7816  Před 7 lety +8

I grew up leading with my left hand, but I've since learned to lead with my right as well. And I do run facing completely forward; I wouldn't run tilted to the side on two legs, so why do it on all fours? (Unless, of course, you are copying a specific animal style that happens to run in such a manner.) I started by studying horse gaits.
The majority of my teaching has been with young children, so please keep that in mind as I share my experience:
Twenty minutes of intermittent quadrobics every couple days seems to work very well for beginners, since it allows the practice an individual needs without being too taxing on the body. However, this does not mean you should follow this regimen to the letter! Every person, every body, is different and has different needs. If you feel like it's too much, ease up a little. If you feel like you want to push it harder, then by all means, go out and enjoy yourself.

This is amazing! I've been practicing for a while now and I was wandering if there are any beginners tips for increasing the strength of the muscles so I can do this longer?

The same principles that apply to any form of exercise (from sports to jogging) apply here: Maintain a healthy diet, intake the proper amount of water, and continue to practice!
I've found that running often for shorter stints tends to work better for beginners than running rarely at long periods of time. If you have the leeway in your schedule to do so, it's worth a try~
