- Of all the gospels left out of the New Testament canon, the Gospel of Thomas may be the most important. Some scholars argue that this collection of the sayings of Jesus preserves an independent witness of the historical Jesus. Others believe the text is dependent on the New Testament and contaminated by the ideas of Gnostic Christianity. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place gives an overview of Thomas and compares the text’s sayings with those in the four canonical gospels.
Love the speaker’s style. Low key. Humble. No agenda. Yet very knowledgeable. I trust everything he says.

Couldn't agree more. And he can talk about so many different topics. Other historians whose lectures I've really enjoyed include Kenneth Harl, Bart Ehrman, Jennifer Paxton, Garrett Fagan, Philip Daileader and Andrew Fix. There are lots of others who can match them in knowledge but unfortunately don't have the charisma. If anyone can recommend other history lectures please do, it's hard to find.

How do you perceive that? does that mean that God requires that an earthly man saves you? an earthly woman maybe? or does it mean that it is THROUGH Jesus Christ?
You should put some serious thought into understanding whose disciple you are? do you follow earthly men and women or do you follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. you are the disciple of the person that is teaching you.

Wonderful lecture on the Gospel of Thomas. The one thing I couldn't help but notice which I think was lost on the presenter was the idea of Thomas as a Twin. It's was not meant to be literal. It implies that Thomas has understood the teachings and transcended, and thus has become like Jesus.
It was meant to be literal. There is another book (Acts of Thomas) that spells out clearly the views of the now-extinct Syro-Persian Thomasine branch of the Church on this relationship. In it there is no question that Dydimus Judas Thomas was an identical twin brother of Jesus who physically looked exactly like Jesus himself. The resurrected Jesus had to cajole and trick him in various ways (including literally framing him for a crime by impersonation) to get him to spread the message to India.

John and Thomas disagreed; but they were clearly members of the same club. I notice how the prologue to the gospel of John (John 1:1-5) can be all but seamlessly interwoven with Thomas' saying #77. It makes for a pretty smooth read. When I read this interwoven version, I can't fail to recognize a kindred spirit animating both authors.
John begins:
In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God.
Jesus in Thomas #77 responds:
I am the light that is over all things. I am all.
John continues:
Through him all things were made and without him was not anything made that was made.
Jesus in Thomas #77 responds:
From me, all has come forth, and to me all has reached.
John continues:
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Jesus in Thomas #77 brings closure:
Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there.
This makes it appear that the two were once very close, and I imagine a very bitter split happening at some point. They just could never come to agree regarding which was more important - history or the present moment. Hmmmmm..... Neil Hundtoft
It seems to me that the writer of Thomas had access to the Gospel of John and wrote the gospel of Thomas from the access to John. Very little to learn from the gospel of Thomas unless you want to confirm a gnostic point of view!
@@dapaulson1 But the author of John was the one who came up with "Doubting Thomas" (John 20:24-29), so if we consider these characters as representative of subsects in Christianity, it seems that the Johannine Community had some sort of beef with a Thomasine Community and vice versa, and the latter hit back at the Johannines in their own gospel. It's really funny that we have this fight preserved thousands of years later in both texts.
Thomas 114 gives full equality to women, if they want it. It's the first document ever written by a human that does that. It was easily the most shocking thing to the ears of first century listeners. That alone makes it the most amazing document in the history of human religion.
The historical Jesus, in Thomas, was dead right about absolutely everything.
The author Thomas did not know the rabbi, he was a disciple of Mani long after yeshua died.

I need to point out, I think the world of John and have learned a lot from his wonderful lectures, and am grateful for his wisdom and humanity. I just feel strongly about the Gospel of Thomas. Don't mean to be caustic, just kinda' turns out that way.

I wanna see a more in depth review of whether Thomas could actually BE Q? Maybe a modified version like the philosophical texts? But that would explain why it "combines" as well as is missing some additions.

John already makes it clear in the video that most scholars don't think Thomas was Q. In fact, there are several diagrams in his presentation that makes it clear that original (non-Gnostic) Thomas was parallel to Q. Scholars think this because our Thomas doesn't preserve all the sayings thought to come from Q, and there is no reason for even the gnostics to delete those sayings. There are also some sayings in Thomas that can't be found in the synoptics that shouldn't be provlematic for the evangelists. Therefore, Thomas is not complete enough to have been Q even in its non-gnostic form.

Neil Hundtoft, greetings, I have taken I guess a different approach then you have, with my 15 years of study. in no way do I seek to offend or to upset, I am simply sharing a different approach.
I have studied the holy Bible the 1611 version, and the first translation of the King James version of the Bible. one of the many things that I have done differently from others, is it I did not start in the Old Testament I started in a New Testament.
For some reason I was drawn to it, I believe it was the knowledge of knowing that this is what was given to those under the new covenant. there were certain things that caught my attention that I could not ignore.
In Matthew 13, Jesus gives a parable of the sower, and he said something that is frightening, for some readers, look at what he said.
(Matthew 13:10 And the DISCIPLES came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto THEM in parables?
11 He answered and said unto THEM, Because it is given unto YOU to Know the Mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to THEM IT IS NOT GIVEN.)
Do you see the separation? Jesus tells his disciples, that the information is given to them but not to others, not to the multitude. Reading that made me certain of one thing, I had to become a disciple of Jesus Christ if I was going to learn about the parables.
That is what the separation is, Those that follow Jesus and those that follow others. I would stop listening to the teachings of earthly men around that time, Because for me, Jesus could not say it any clearer than he just had.
That fear stayed with me for a while, until I came upon this next verse that caught my attention.
(Matthew 13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been KEPT SECRET from the foundation of the world.)
It would be some five books later that I would read this in 1 Corinthians 2.
(1 Corinthians 2:14 But the NATURAL MAN receiveth not THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD: for they are FOOLISHNESS UNTO HIM: neither can HE KNOW THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED.)
Do you see the separation, it's right there it can be no clearer than that. what that verse is saying is, that there is a surface reading of the Bible and there is a SPIRITUAL READING OF THE BIBLE.
I do not know you, and I can't be sure that we have ever met. I can honestly say that I do not think we have, Neil, man is at the bottom of the spiritual food chain, as Jesus stated if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.
I cannot express to you in a way that you can comprehend, how void that hour and 30 minutes was that I spent, listening to this gentleman speak, he edified nothing, there was nothing gained nothing taught of any use, in understanding the word of God.
Neil, if you ask me, I will give you 4 hours of study and you will call the gentleman that you spent, an hour and 30 minutes listening to, Antichrist. I promise you there would be no vague explanation, It will not take a leap of faith to believe, it will not even be me actually teaching you, you will be reading and studying out of the King James Bible.

Can I ask about the issue where you discuss at about 15.29 the 3 versions of The Poor and the Kingdom. Is it not the case that a term, 'The Poor', was used as a reference to the sect of which Jesus was a member. In that context, it is they, the members of the sect, who inherit The Kingdom, as one might expect. In that context, I would hazard St Thomas is the earlier and accurate expression. In later times, we've come to associate 'The Poor' with those who are of limited wealth and position, because that is what it means to us in our social context.
I recall the copies of the King James version also having 'The Poor' printed as thus, not in lower case in my childhood. This would say, you can always give to the sect (because he was challenged that she should have given the money to the sect instead of wasting it profligately). but I won't always be here. I read this profound spiritual truth saying somewhere 'if we die before we die then we never die at all'
A number of times throughout the Gospel of Thomas we are told that when we come to understand what is being said, we “will not taste death”. That evocative phrase points the way to our escape. Death, by definition, is a state of having no experience. The only experience we can have of death is the fear of it we know while we are still alive. All of the terrors of death can exist only for the living. God is God, and all is in his will. There can be nothing to worry about. The Gospel of Thomas tells me that indulging in worries about death and missing out on the present living moment is a bad trade. Neil Hundtoft

Thank you John for this superb overview. A question: You say the NT names Simon Magus whom Irenaeus identifies as a "gnostic."I find Irenaeus identifying him as a Simonian, rather than a gnostic. Is there another reference? Also what identifies Hymenaeus and Philetus as gnostics? When exactly did the word gnostic come to take on its current meaning, ie as a particular kind of heterodoxy? I ask, noting that n late C2nd/early3rdCE Clement of Alexandria used the phrase "the true gnostic" to indicate a devout believer and seeker of truth. I agree that harmonization usually manifests as getting longer winded and more subtle - a phenomenon well-known to any writer. Whereas Thomas' sayings are punchier and cruder. Setting a widely-agreed upon definition of capital-G "Gnosticism" is one of the more heated debates within biblical scholarship nowadays and there is a vocal camp that would argue the term has no usefulness as an academic heuristic (see: Rethinking "Gnosticism" by Michael A. Williams for more on this idea).
The saying “For many of the first will be last, and will become a single one” explains what happens to a soul that has not come to ‘life’. It is absorbed into the whole, the Source, it ‘tastes death’. This energy (soul) becomes something else. Yeshua (Jesus) explains that people (many of the first), who are enamoured of wealth & power in this life, are at risk of being separated from the Holy Spirit, which links the ‘living’ Spirit to the Source (Father). I bow to the divine in you 🙏🏼

How did the Gospel of Thomas' sayings become numbered? Could someone please tell me how the Gospel of Thomas came to have its sayings numbered from 1 to 114? When you combine the numbers with the prologue “THESE are the hidden sayings...” the numbering becomes quite misleading. It leads one to think that Jesus sat down one day and dictated 114 sayings to Thomas in the order given in the Coptic document, which is clearly not the case. Sometimes, the saying is not even Jesus speaking, such as in Saying #74. Saying #47 could easily be split into several sayings, as the five saying-lets grouped there don't appear to relate to each other in any clear way. Saying #66 could well be included as part of Saying #65, as it provides a conclusion to the parable of the tenants. That is the way Mark 12 treats it. I would sure appreciate the help of that scholar out there who knows the answer to this. The clincher for me recognizing that the numbering isn't original to the document is that the numbering assigned to the Coptic copy from Nag Hammadi was used to assign parallel numbers to the Oxyrynchus papyrus fragments. No one knew how those fragments fit into the larger whole until the Nag Hammadi library was found. Thanks ahead to the gracious scholar who will take time to resolve this troubling puzzle for me. I'm sure you coordinated the nag hamaddi text in Coptic with the 200 year earlier papyrus fragments found at the Oxyrhycus (sp) found in a burned down ancient Egyptian Library, written in the original Greek, the surviving parts of which match up very closely Coptic nag hamadi codices. This is bvious strong evidence of translators 2 century survivor.
I don't see why saying 114 should be taken that literally (question in the end of the session) when pretty much all the other sayings are trying to cast of the shackles of literal understandings. There is probably more depth to that saying than we dare go into - at least until we cast of our clothes and dwell upon it as nursing babies and in correlation to the other sayings. Especially in correlation to saying 1, 2 and 3.

It seems to me almost impossible that He would have brought a teaching such as " the first will be last and the last will be first" and conveyed it many times in many different situations and used exactly the same words every time. This option of different accounts seems to not be considered at all, only that there was one single correct source and numerous corruptions. For me, this casts serious scholarly doubt on the entire analysis. Not to even mention that Q is regarding in the start as a hypothetical text, then subsequently referred to repeatedly as if it is foundational fact. I enjoy the discussion, but the analysis isn't well executed, in my opinion.

The gospels are written 50-100 years after Jesus died, though, so it’s more likely that the texts are copies of each other than different accounts of Jesus’ own words. Also, remember that Jesus spoke Aramaic, and the gospels are written in Greek. So, if 2 texts have the same word for word passages in Greek, they are likely inspired by each other.

They were having to get permission to count beans so why ask permission, what does authority, for a simplistic example, have to do with basic observations. Experimental design is the place where Occam's Razor is truly powerful. There you may have an experiment or hypothesis where the inquiry is in line with the problem. Now, there are post atomic age observations to deal with. Try selling your epistemological razor to modern biology or quantum mechanical research Occam. Still the question is always more important than the answer, especially when the answers are self-evidently wrong. Occam took a razor to the system called The Church to let science be science and work as it should. He cut science out of theology. I just want to put it back. I have always taken the last saying as referring to more esoteric meanings having to do with what we now call chakras.. meaning female referring to the lower feminine and male referring to the upper or 'crown' chakra.. I support the argument that the authorship of the Gospel of Thomas predates Quelle and was the source for much of Quelle's text as well as that of Mark. It appears to me that your discussion of Sayings #65 and #66 (at 32:00 - 36:00 minutes) includes observations based on criteria which support my assertion. Original versions, we agree, tend to be the shortest, least elaborated and most generalized. As you point out, Mark was the source for Matthew and Luke. Yet Mark's version provides an extended narrative, drawing imagery from Isaiah about the vineyard and placing it all in a setting of rebuke to those failing to accept Jesus as Messiah. In Mark's version, the owner becomes angry and gives the vineyard to the care of others more deserving. We see Luke and Matthew pick up on Mark's theme of anger and extend it further to include the very destruction of those “miserable wretches”! But in Thomas, the text is direct, short and absolutely devoid of emotion. The beating of the servant is simply dismissed as a failure to communicate. There's no anger and no suggestion of retribution, which it appears is the later contribution of the synoptic authors drawing from Thomas. And so we go from Thomas, giving us an unemotional observation that the innocent will suffer, to Mark, for which the suffering of the innocent is the theme. Mark expands on Thomas by introducing sectarian anger and the eviction of the unworthy from the vineyard. This version then travels to the hyperbolic vitriol of Luke and Matthew who are out to destroy “those miserable wretches”. In a side-by-side comparison of texts, it appears unavoidable to conclude the chronology as I propose it. Is this not a sound line of reasoning?

I've really been enjoying these different lectures. It's great to see someone digging deep into the origins of these things. All wisdom writings are symbolic, and must be understood in the context of the culture from which they come.
Daoism speaks, for example, of the mother, Dao, instead of the father. It uses the term "female" as a symbol for humility, the emptiness. It states in poem 10, as the door of Heaven opens and closes, can you be the female? So, in Daoist culture, the term "female" has a virtuous significance.
Poem 28 of the Dao De Jing says, be aware of the male, but tend to the female. It is also translated as, know the male, but keep to the female. Dao De Jing 42 speaks of blending the male (yang) and the female (yin.)

Pagels has been writing best-sellers that the Gospel of John was written/edited to refute the much older Gospel of Thomas. Strong evidence it's true. The non-superstitious Doubting Thomas was proven wrong, so the non-superstitions Gospel of Thomas must be wrong too and so on. That means Thomas was around, and called "Thomas" when disciples that knew Thomas were still around to dispute it. A very different breed of cat than the Christian Gospels written decades later.
@Darren The Gospel of Thomas isn't second century, capital "G" Gnostic. It's the opposite. There are hundreds of very strong Thomas/Christian Gospel parallels. Since you were a "gnostic" you should have no problem pointing out a Thomas/2nd century capital "G" Gnostic parallel.

I would just like to make a point that even top biblical scholars are often not aware of as regards oral traditions. The scriptures of early Buddhism were transmitted orally for hundreds of years, their total length being many times that of the Bible, the English translation being 33 substantial books. This did not rely on being in rhyme or metre for transmission but there is a lot of repetition. The point is that a truly vast tradition can be transmitted orally, if there is a large group of settled monastics to recite it. As with any oral tradition of course it does not remain static, but the changes are likely to be more gradual than in the looser Chinese whispers situation envisaged for early Christianity.
It says I am the light that is over all things, not in. So maybe when it says split a piece of wood, lift a stone, it means the light cast from the sun. Just maybe.

Why do you use the term "monkish" when "monk" is a much later term. Essenes, John the Baptist, etc, were living isolated, aesthetic lives long before christian monks. It seems the early jesus movement was continuing the essenic tradition.
