- Welcome to Quick & Dirty Tips for the easy way to raise your SAT English score!
This series is specially for August Digital SAT test takers, and I'm going through the advanced topics of the Reading & Writing. Today's specific topic is the Central Idea Question on the Culture Passage!
1. Recognize that this is Central Idea Question from the phrase "What does the passage suggest/say/claim/indicate?"
2. From the first sentence, notice that we are talking about some type of art, tradition, creative heritage, and notice that its a Culture passage.
3. Look for the answer that celebrates or admires the Culture while eliminating the extreme/negative answers!

Hello, based on teaching SAT since 2008, and having gotten perfect scores on Reading in PSAT (twice), SAT (4 times), SAT Literature, and AP Literature (also administered by College Board), I believe I should have some qualification to know College Board patterns and tendencies. Of course, I'm just some guy on the internet, so you are free not believe me.

However, if you find a single question from any College Board reading section, from PSAT, SAT, or AP, that says something negative about a culture, please let me know as I would be fascinated to see it. As far as I know, it has not happened, even once, since 2008 (not as sure about the patterns before I started teaching although I've no reason to believe the patterns have changed over the years)

I think in ans choice C "criticized" is negative, so I eliminate that right away. Can u explain this to me?
Criticized is negative for sure. But the statement is that it's been "unjustly criticized." This means that people are saying bad things (criticize) and that I think this was wrong (unjustly). In other words, C is saying "I think it's wrong how people are saying bad things." So this is actually an answer choice that is defending the topic, not being negative! Hope this helps :)
