  • This poetic presentation seeks to explain the concept of bias and its relevance in the clinical laboratory. The following are the important points dealt with in this presentation:-
    Bias is the difference between the mean of multiple measurements and the true value of the 'measurand'.
    The bias associated with the method used by the laboratory can be determined by comparison with a reference method.
    A bias higher than the allowable limits is likely to produce clinically significant errors when patients samples are tested.
    Inaccuracy consists of both systematic and random errors and is determined by participation in external quality assurance programmes.
