Potting Birds Nest Fern + How to Grow

- In this video I am repotting my variegated birds nest fern. How to pot or how to repot birds nest ferns is pretty simple, though the soil chosen can vary depending on climate or growing styles. Growing birds nest ferns is fairly simple as they are a easy to grow houseplants. Despite them being easy to grow, I still went on for about 10 minutes talking about how mine will be cared for and other ways people care for them.

Love your varigated birds nest fern....Good memories for me..One of my first plants at 17 years old..like my first baby).....a cute tiny 3 inch tiny tiny plant.....I kept for 45 years and re-potted as needed..spoiled.....hand collect composted rotted pockets from huge old growth maple trees mixed with a bit of loose moss....with the repots... it was 5 ft. tall....indoors.....Only pest was scale.....wipe off carefully dish soap paper towel rinse well..into the shower if needed....with the good drainage I watered in the center...like rain would catch on the big leaves and run down the center. They are georgous... leaves tear and bruse easy. Love them.
45 years!? Dang I have a commitment ahead of me with these guys! Sounds like you babied it perfectly too!
@@TropicalPlantParty Yes, I Loved it....it took up a 5 ft. Circle in the livingroom...E. window, morning light...and late day light from W. window across the room....turn often with each new frond... to make even growth each leaf was about 10 " across..fertilizer with every other watering...I found another video you might enjoy....called........tropical forest, goes, the netherlands........... Relax enjoy! Have a great day, Jeff.
Jeff I'm happy you are still planting and doing your videos. Thank you.
Thank you! Makes me happy playing with the plants, brings me some inner peace.
Hi Jeff!
glad to see you up and about 👍🏾😃
the pool area is looking great!
I've found that ferns really respond well to seaweed extract foliar sprays on a schedule. I usually use 10mL of BluePlanetNutrients seaweed extract per gallon every 2 weeks. Sometimes I add a liquid organic all purple fertilizer in the mix. I've never had an issue with this. I think a lot of people mess up by using synthetic fertilizers on ferns. They don't respond well to synthetics at all in my experience. I've never had a variegated fern that I can remember though. Now I want a birds nest fern... lol
Seaweed extract is amazing isn't it? Works wonders!
It’s beautiful against the light! Glad to see you pottying around again 😊
Was so fun just planting and talking to the camera. Feels like it's been forever!
Hi Jeff! Beautiful Variegated Bird's Nest Fern!!!! Thanks for sharing.
Hello! Hope you are doing well!
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks! I'm doing great!
Didn't know there was such a thing! ❤ it! Thanks for the video.
I am so happy you have people helping you! I had surgery 5 years ago, and I had to just let some things go and try not to stress about all the plants I had. If you lose some, well... new plants are in your future!!! xoxo
Exactly! That's how I'm feeling about it all. I love my plants, but they are not my main priority right now and not something to stress over.
Jeff, I love watching your videos, because you add the yin & the yang of everything you are talking about! 2 Thumbs up! Hope you are feeling GOOD! Thanx !!! :)
Thank you Aimee!
Can’t even hear the fan Jeff, you need to keep cool💚🙃 I just got distracted by a squirrel, you made me laugh, I love you💚🙃 I’m about to give up on house plants, I have way too many and it very hard to keep up with watering during the winter months. We have very dry heat with supplemental wood stove heat. I’m constantly watering, my other thought is to get them big enough so there’s more soil in the pots. I started my obsession last winter, and bought tons of small plants, very small plants and they’re always drying out. So I think I will keep the ones I absolutely adore, grow them up and the others I will try to keep watered but there is no guarantee there. Thank you Jeff,it was so nice to see you. I know that you have had company, so I haven’t been bothering you lately, don’t want you to get lonely, and start thinking too much about things that may or may not happen. Have a truly Blessed day💚🙃 P.S. love your fern💚💚💚💚💚
You can buy the black plastic trays and put several in a tray to ease watering.
I know the feeling! I went to great lengths last winter to help reduce how often I had to water all the little plants. I found that wicking cord and trays of water made a tremendous difference! oh yes, i have a lot of people around me keeping me occupied and distracted.
Hi! Jeff glad to see you again also your amazing garden plus your great ideas 👍❤ I know how you feel to see your plants not the way we liked...
But you take care because I care. always we can replace a plant but not you!!❤🙏🤗 have a blessed day!stay cool 😉
Thank you Ashley! I don't stress over a few spots here and there. Perfect plants are less common than all the fakery on instagram leads people to believe. Spots and broken leaves/branches happen, just the way it is. 😊
@@TropicalPlantParty 👍🤗❤
Hi Jeff hope you are taking good care of yourself and staying cool .You sound somewhat better but that can be just you . Still in my prayers and thoughts hoping for the best .Like always thank you for everything you do enjoy watching you do your thing your way.have a great strong weekend and keep on growing happy planting. I do have the same plant it is only ten yrs old and I too love it mine is in a 12 inch pot and more bark then anything looks wounderful and lush. See you next time take care and stay safe.
Thanks kit! Im ok, everyday/hour is different but I'm doing my best to stay positive.
Great to hear from you Jeff. I love anything variegated..Take it easy 👍
Thank you! Hope you're having a great weekend!
Holy variation Batman. I couldn't keep a Fern alive here in the desert unless I put it on a IV drip and ventilator and I'd still kill it. So I'll admire yours from afar. Have a great weekend
🤣😂 I'd imagine it would be really hard in a dry climate!
So so pretty, love those variegated ferns. (I never hear the fan...)
I try and keep my right hand cupped over the mic to block the wind sounds, usually it isn't noticeable. Hope you are doing well!
Thanks, Jeff, I'm doing great and I hope you are well and hanging in there... My 💗 is with you.
Hi Jeff! I was so happy to see another video from you, you always make my day, plus, you were able to repot your fern! I'm really glad you have someone to help you with different things, and you're always so thoughtful, forgiving and kind. I wish I lived close to you so I could help. I love the variegated birds nest fern and hope to be able to find one some day. 🤞 You sound like you're feeling pretty good. Please keep us updated on what's going on with your checkups/surgeries. Take care and keep on growing! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you! Im feeling good! Still waiting on my pathology results but im in good spirits mentally and physically. Hope you are doing well!
What a treat to find a new video today! I love birds nest ferns. Kitty friendly and just so lush and jungly. I have them indoors and out. As long as I keep the outdoor ones in the shade, they seem to tolerate the Houston heat pretty well.
Houston! So many awesome plants you can grow there!
Good to see you Jeff! I had a friend look after my plants and garden for a couple of days in that time she managed to chop the heads off my topiary peacocks!!! Took me nearly 20 years to get them right 🙄 glad you have some help though 😘 xx
Oh no! 20 years!? Yikes!
Yes now they look like headless chickens!!! Very representative of my life I guess 😆
Your garden is beautiful
Thank you!
Glad to see you in your garden! ☺ Hope you stay in good spirits. I'm absolutely loving your camera quality! Feels like I'm right in the garden with you.Take care, praying for your complete recovery.
Thank you! Im trying my best to stay positive and keep as busy as I can while still resting. 😊
YAY!! Its Jeff Time !
😂🤣 hello!
I know the feeling Jeff! I cut a deep gash in my shin last summer, the day before July 4th! I had so many garden plans, and it took 6 month for the gash to completely heal. I wanted so bad to finish my projects but had to keep dirt away from my leg. So be careful hon. Your garden thrives though even while you heal up!
Oh that sounds horrible! Im doing ok, have adjusted to other people taking care of things.
Tropical Plant Party it was not fun Lol. It is healed up, somewhat sensitive to bumps. But that’s how it goes with shin injuries. I am so happy you have folks to help!
Your variegated bird's nest fern is far less ratty than mine. I moved it to full shade after some of the leaves started to crisp, but I think since 'some of the leaves' is really most of them, and they're still hanging on, that contributes to the ratty appearance. Also the new fronds on mine are coming in green, though there's some signs of faint variegation, so I'm hoping they come in green then develop the variegation as they mature. I have a regular bird's nest fern from walmart sitting next to it, and the regular is definitely doing better.
Your plant is looking good though!
I've wondered/ feared that these might be the gasoline infused hoax variegated plants! Not much info online about them so I guess it will be a waiting game to see if the variegation sticks. All of the new growth I've has had wad variegated, but it takes time for reversion. Ill b so pissed! 🤣😂
I just found your channel today. I love how casual it is. And I have learned a lot! Also you have completely reeled me in on your personal story! I will be looking for updates! I have a small blue star fern so this video gave me some similar info. I’m in zone 6 Illinois. Can I keep him in the shade outside? And what months should he live indoors? Thanks and take care!
I've been struggling with a crocodile fern. I think it's sitting too low in the pot. Now I know what to do about it. Thanks for tips!
No problem! Crocodile ferns are so fun and pretty!
My interest in variegated plants has waned a lil bit, but this guy is so cute still!
Hope he does well with your helpers
I know what you mean, I've always been very particular when it comes to variegated plants.
Wow
"I just got distracted by a squirrel"
Okay Tucker. 🤪
How's about an update on your terrariums? It's been like six months. Okay, maybe four. Surely they've done things in that time.
Lol! I have tried several times but finding enough quiet between other people and parrots in the house is a tricky thing to do.
My crocodile fern is doing amazing and I love it so much. My other two ferns, birdsnest and a bamboo button wood fern died on me 😩
Crocodile ferns are so cool!
Hi there...enjoyed watching your video...i only have normal potting for this beautiful plant that i was just given to me that seriously needs repotting, but i am worried to repot, as i don't want to destroy it :( how much room do they need to grow? that i put it in the right pot....thank you :)
💚💚💚
I think the nurseries put the sphagnum on those plants to keep them hydrated in case the mass watering don’t reach through the leaves. Just a thought!
That's likely why, makes sense for mass growing.
Tropical Plant Party Could very well be. I would use it if I was propagating lots of ferns.
💚 Miracle Grow! I get the mix for Garden vegetables and herbs or the mix for houseplants.
Feathers💗
Exactly!
Ah,I gotta get that one. Never seen one variegated before. Where did you find that?
I have here in California a HUGE BNF,2' of thick trunk and 4-5' long apple green fronds...about 14 years old. A variegated would be fine.
Do they prefer plastic or clay pots?
Do they prefer plastic or clay pots
Is fern Friday back?! 😉Would you recommend the same type of mix for blue star fern? I have one that needs a repot and I’m stressing over the mix. Take care.
Not officially back, still waiting on my pathology and don't want to set any schedules in stone until I know what's going on health wise. Hopefully it is back though! Blue star ferns are really tough, standard potting mix should be fine for them, but they would grow well in a more airy mix like this as well.
Tropical Plant Party just found your old video in these and rewatched it :) take care of yourself
Squirrel!
😂🤣
I didn’t know birds nest fern had a variegated variety. where do you find that?
Mine are from ebay. 🙂
Tropical Plant Party I never even thought to look for plants on eBay... so thank you.
would this be considered a fern Friday?!?!?!?
miss that series
😂🤣 perhaps! I didnt want to say that or make a commitment to it yet since I'm still waiting on pathology results and don't really know what things will be like over the next weeks or even months.
Tropical Plant Party hoping for the best!! Take care of yourself before anything else!! Best wishes.
Leave bowls with beer in them & the snails & slugs love it but don’t last long after
Works like a charm!
...but, the little guys die happy!
Soil mix please
Why didn’t you water it after you repotted?
I did, it just wasn't filmed. My bad! I tend to avoid have the hose or watering cans near the camera and then forget to mention that I watered the plant, or am going to as soon the tech gear is put away.
My birds best fern is dying and idk what I’m doing wrong!!!!!!!!!!
Happens sometimes. They are one of those plants that will grow flawlessly for some people and die for other people with nearly identical care. I dont know what to make of that other than slight differences in growing conditions or something being wrong with nutrient absorption.
I wouldn't used stone and hang it in the tree
Wish me luck I just got one today from a coworker
I’m a fern killer 🥹
These are fairly tough. The variegated doesn't seem as resilient as the regular though, mine stall dramatically if they aren't getting a good amount of humidity. So excited for you, beautiful plants!
