  • CRUISE TIPS #16a, PACK EXTRA MEDICATION
    People often get their medication ready for a cruise and plan out each day they are away. However something can happen and can delay your return home. You don't want to run out of needed medication if this happens.

    I really enjoy these tips even though some of them are just common sense for me. But I'm sure what is common sense to me will prove helpful for another. Thanks Don and keep them coming.

    We were stuck in Mexico on 911. I always take a few extra days of meds, especially the most important ones. I can live without fish oil.

    Makes so much sense. I take at least 1 month medication with me. They are pills and do not take up any space. I also make sure my medication is in my pocket book or carry on luggage. So simple

    Definitely a good tip, Dan! We were on the carnival freedom two years ago when the whale tail caught on fire and we had to stay several extra days in grand Turk. Some members of my family were among the many who did not have extra medication for those extra three days.now we always take an extra four or five days with us.

    Good tip- The one problem I have had in the past in bringing extra medication and barely having enough medication during my cruise is when the okay to refill date for my prescription falls in the middle of the cruising dates and the pharmacy refuses to refill it before the cruise because it is considered too early for refilling by the insurance company.

    We always take extra and in original bottles in case of an emergency refill. And carry it with your carry-on not checked luggage in case it gets lost. Air lines don't forward your luggage to your next island, stop only your destination.

    I know you do a great job and you’re Mr. Cruise line. And you also bring us amazing points of view from our Canadian roots. But can say half or more of your tips. Reply to travel in general like this one.. anytime my wife leaves the home. We’re going to visit in-laws driving flying cruising you always make sure you have like two weeks supply extra especially if it’s very important medication. It’s just fiber pills and one vitamins that’s not crucial and it can be like a week extra. Thank you for all the tips. I’m sure people are benefiting from your knowledge.

    Also always keep your medication with/on you during travel days. Luggage can get lost and delayed, and even carry-on baggage can be made to be checked baggage when boarding, which in turn can be lost or delayed.

    I had a cruise experience for 8 days and I didn't bring 3 of my pills, but I was able to get them in their clinic as I carry a slip with what my meds are and dosage. We ended up using cruise credits as it cost $125 for them. They didn't have my specific ones but for the 8 days they worked. Very grateful for them stupid on my part. Now the first thing I pack are my meds and a few days extra supply.

    • @marianneward8980
      @marianneward8980 Před 2 měsíci

      You are very lucky that the cruise credits worked. On our last cruise, one member of our family got the flu so they gave everyone the medicine as a prophylactic. Even though we had tons of cruise credit remaining, we still had to pay for the medicine. The cruise line said they couldn't be applied to any medical center charges.

    Newbie here. Please talk about, in detail, how to transport prescriptions (with consideration to different classes of drugs) and over the counter drugs and vitamins. Can I just use a medicine day planner for the what I take daily? Do I have to have original bottles for everything? What about very large (Costco, Sam's Club) size bottles? Do I really have to use those or can I just use an old prescription bottle with my own labels (for stuff I take as needed). Would taking a readable picture of the label and the med help? I suspect you don't know the answer to everything I'm asking but hopefully others may be able to chime in about different things. More followup questions as needed: Can I mix prescription and OTC (meds and vitamins) in the day planner or do I have to keep separate? Should I have all my meds in carry-on or a few days with the rest in checked baggage? (This is if I have a lot of meds and OTC/vitamins or dealing with large bottles) ALSO!! Don't forget about getting those same meds through airport security, I know their rules are different and may have compatibility issues with cruise security. I know most people have no issues here but there are always sharp corner cases where you could lose the med or get denied boarding the cruise or the plane. (OUCH! Very sharp corners!)

    We do the same with additional labels on pill bottles!
    Also, I bring (probably too much!) over the counter medicine like cold/flu, Benadryl and gut. It's super expensive on the ship and supply is limited... and it can let you help out other cruisers who might need something. 😊
